THE RIO GRANDE CATHOLIC Vol. 31, No. 3 The Official Paper of the Diocese of El Paso March 2022 Archbishop Wester Of Santa Fe Makes $65k Gift To Border Fund El Paso, TX - The Most Rev. John C. Wester, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe in New Mexico, has made a contribution of $65,000 to the Border Refugee Assistance Fund to support the needs of vulner- able people on the move at the US-Mexico border. The Border Refugee Assis- tance Fund is a joint initiative of the Diocese of El Paso, and the Hope Border Institute to provide for the emergency humanitarian needs of migrants arriving to the US-Mexico border. “With hearts full of faith, we can meet the challenges of forced migration and transform this moment into a time of greater cooperation across borders and deeper love for our neighbors in need,” said Bishop Seitz. “I am so grateful to Archbishop Wester and the people of the Archdio- cese of Santa Fe for putting their faith into action by generously supporting the Border Refugee Assistance Fund.” In addition to making a gift, Archbishop Wester and Bishop Seitz joined the Hope Border Institute in visiting refugees in Ciudad Juárez for a series of listening sessions to better understand the needs of those who migrate, including persons returned under TItle 42 and the recently re-instituted Migrant Protection Protocols. “The Catholic Church in the United States and Mexico has repeatedly called for an end to policies that turn our neighbors back to danger,” said Archbish- Archbishop John C. The Rio Grande Catholic Diocesan News March 2022 - 5 Diocese Reopens Temporary Migrant Shelter By Christopher Velasquez Staff Writer As migrants and refugees from Latin America and beyond continue to arrive in El Paso, the faithful have stepped up to aid their brothers and sisters in need. Since the reopening of the migrant shelter at Martyrs Hall on January 3rd many migrants spanning various ages and nationalities have found tempo- rary support on the grounds of the Diocese of El Paso as they await their next destination. The need to reopen the migrant shelter arose as the Annunciation House needed support to aid the increasing number of migrants and refugees. The shelter works with local authorities and provides essen- tial support to the migrants who have been vetted by border patrol and brought to the diocese for assistance on their journey. As migrants continue to arrive at the migrant shelter, the urgent need for more volunteers has arisen. Since the reopening of the migrant shelter at Martyrs Hall on January 3rd many migrants spanning various ages and nationalities have found “The vast majority are people temporary support on the grounds of the Diocese of El Paso as they await their next destination.
