OUR VISION ‘what a misfortune the Town is in generall under for want of a Grammar Schoole‛ (Portsmouth Quarter Sessions, 23 October 1717) In 1732 the dying wish of Dr William Smith, Mayor of Portsmouth and Physician to its Garrison, was that the Dean and Canons of Christ Church, Oxford would use his gift of land to establish a grammar school in Portsmouth. Smith’s own education had taken him from Newport on the Isle of Wight to Leiden University, one of Europe’s leading centres for medical training. Smith returned to a successful career in Portsmouth, having experienced for himself the transformative power of learning. In his legacy, he wished to make it possible for the city’s children to experience the same excellence in education and to develop a hunger for broader horizons. As the oldest school in the city and, uniquely, a non-denominational Cathedral School, we honour the legacy of our Founder, while offering our pupils a forward-looking preparation for the modern world. We wish the members of our community to be both happy and successful, and our purpose as a school is to offer an outstanding education that prepares each individual to lead a fulfilled and purposeful life. The Main Archway is symbolic of our inclusivity as a school community and our desire to expand horizons: ‘All experience is an arch wherethrough Gleams that untravelled world’, Tennyson In the spirit of our founder, Dr William Smith, we encourage our pupils to think not only about where they will be at 18 but where they aspire to be at 25. Portsmouth is, after all, a city concerned with destinations. Our Vision We wish the members of our community to: • Be happy and to thrive • Enjoy learning and pursue success to the best of their ability • Be prepared for the changing world beyond school • Make an active contribution and live purposeful lives • Develop a sense of identity and to be their own person 2
Our Aims As a community, we aim to: • Foster a nurturing environment that enables each individual to grow in confidence and to fulfil their personal potential • Ignite a love of learning; to cultivate academic excellence; and to foster individual progress • Equip each individual to thrive in a changing world • Prepare each individual to make a positive contribution to their communities, through both leadership and service • Help each individual understand themselves and develop their unique strengths PUPIL WELFARE AND CONCERNS Staff are always keen to support pupils’ interests, and to promote their learning and welfare. All pupils are encouraged to approach any member of staff about any topic at a time of mutual convenience. Parents who wish to make an appointment to see the Head of the Junior School are invited to contact her PA, Mrs E. Maskell (e.maskell@pgs.org.uk) The school seeks to work closely with parents and pupils, and if parents have concerns they are encouraged to share these with the school at the first opportunity. Parents should contact their child’s Form Teacher in the first instance. The Form Teacher will, if appropriate, involve other members of the pastoral and academic staff. In the case of unresolved concerns or complaints, parents should follow the PGS Parental Complaints Policy & Procedure, available on the School’s website. In certain circumstances, this may include contacting the Chairman of Governors via the Clerk to the Governors, Mr S. Merriam, who is also the Bursar. The school’s safeguarding team is led by the Senior Deputy Head as Designated Safeguarding Lead and he is supported by six Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads, currently made up of the Pre-School Lead, the Deputy Head of the Junior School, the Assistant Head (Pastoral - JS), the Assistant Head (Admissions & Partnerships), the Assistant Head (Pastoral - SS) and the Deputy Head (Innovation). The school also has a designated safeguarding Governor who may be contacted via the Clerk to the Governors, Mr Simon Merriam, who is also the Bursar. The school’s wider pastoral team may also be approached in cases of personal difficulty. Our experienced team of School Nurses may be contacted during school hours in the Health and Wellbeing Centre (tel. 023 9236 4243 or nursingteam@pgs.org.uk). The school has an association with a local medical practice, which provides advice and support when necessary; and the school counsellors can be contacted at school.counsellor@pgs.org.uk. Mr Ashcroft, Mrs Evans and Mrs Eastburn are Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads and oversee all safeguarding issues in The Junior School. The school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead is Mr David Payne (Senior Deputy). Further information about safeguarding child protection responsibilities can be found on page 12 of the Red Book. 3
