Reception Induction Meeting 2020 Proud to be part of The White Horse Federation Multi-Academy Trust | www.twhf.org.uk
On behalf of everyone here at Bowerhill Primary School, welcome to a new and exciting stage in your child’s life. During this year your child will make new friends, enjoy new experiences and learn the vital new skills of reading and writing. We, teacher and parents, have the chance to work as partners to ensure that at the end of this school year your child will have a positive attitude towards education based on social and academic confidence.
What to expect • Children follow the EYFS curriculum which follows on from pre-school • Children learn through play • Children will have focused Maths, Phonics and English sessions • Strong relationships between parents and staff • Children will get mucky as they play and explore • Lots of fun will be had!
Foundation Stage The seven areas of learning and development are: • Communication and Language • Physical Development • Personal, Social, and Emotional Development • Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding of the World • Expressive Arts and Design
Learning Through Play (LTP) The Adults role during Learning Through Play (LTP) • We use daily Learning Through Play sessions to develop each To act as a role model child’s learning To scaffold the child • Children choose the area that they wish to work in, either To make planned & careful inside or out observations crucial to future learning • Stimuli are planned for in the areas
Playing with your child at home •Give your child time to play every day. •Provide things for your child to play with. Recycled materials like boxes, household items and old clothes are often more fun than bought toys and equipment, and they cost less. •Join in the play. Take on a role, make jokes and be playful. •Make space for play. As your child gets older he/she will probably spend more time playing with a particular thing or in a particular role, so having a place where your child can leave items and continue playing with them the next day is important. •When chatting, ask what your child was playing that day. Show that you value play whether it’s at home, with the childminder, in pre-school, in playgroup or in primary school.
“Phonics” -Learning letters At Bowerhill Primary School we use the Read, Write, Inc phonics scheme. • Read, Write Inc (RWI) • A rapid Learn to read programme so children… Read to learn for the rest of their lives http://www.ruthmiskin.com • Blending to read words • Segmenting to spell words The children learn the letter sounds alongside a picture card. This helps the children to remember the sound for example ‘s’ is taught using the story and picture of a snake. The children will need to be confident with all of the letter sounds before they move onto reading. We will hold a reading meeting to explain the home and school reading schemes in September/October
Assessment Throughout the school year the children in reception will be assessed on the Early Learning Goals. The Early Learning Goals form the basis of planning and the activities within the foundation stage. You will be informed of your child’s progress, using the Early Learning Goals, at the parent conferences and through a formal report at the end of the school year.
Online Learning Journey As part of the assessment process we take photographs of the children completing activities. These will be put in the child’s online learning journal. As a school we also have a Webpage, Twitter and Facebook account. These sites are used to celebrate the good work the children and the school are doing. Tapestry builds a very special record of a child’s experiences, development and learning journey through their early years and primary education. Using photos, videos and diary entries, a teacher or early years practitioner, along with the child’s parents, ‘weaves’ the story of the child and how they are growing and developing. The Tapestry platform then works seamlessly to enable these memories to be kept as a permanent record of each child’s unique journey. All information held in the platform is stored securely, and can be downloaded and shared as required. Parents are able to view online their child’s progress and how much fun they’re having, whilst also uploading their own comments and media. The communication between staff and parents that Tapestry enables, helps build a shared understanding of how every child can reach their full potential, from birth to the end of primary school. The Tapestry online learning journal is also available as an easy-to-use, secure app, meaning capturing key learning moments, and videoing milestones are even easier. Log in will be sent to you in due course
Are they ready for School? When starting big school children need to be able to: • To express their needs appropriately • Use the toilet independently • Wash and dry hands • Blow their nose • Sit up at a table • Eat their packed lunch properly • Use a knife and fork and carry a plate of food • Dress and undress themselves • Sit quietly to listen to a story or a piece of music • Wait patiently • Share and take turns • Tidy up things they have used • Say goodbye with a smile !!!!!!!!
Your role as parents You can increase your child’s confidence and self esteem by working on a range of independence skills. Look for opportunities to apply simple skills such as • observing, • counting, • pointing out labels and words • sharing books and pictures • talking and listening with your child. • reinforcing good learning attitudes and relationships, particularly sharing, caring and considering safety.
Getting Ready for School At home you could practise these activities to improve your child’s co-ordination: • Holding a pencil correctly • Using a knife and fork • Carrying a plate of food • Colouring in accurately • Using scissors • Using Glue and paint carefully • Hopping and Skipping • Balancing, Running and Jumping • Kicking a ball. Catching and throwing a ball • Tying shoe laces • Peeling fruit • Drawing straight and curvy lines • Playing board and matching games • Completing jigsaws • Playing ‘I Spy’ • Playing ‘spot the difference, snap and dot to dot games
Your role as parents • Listen to your child • Support your child with any reading or work sent home • Be a positive role model – don’t let them see if you are anxious about them starting school • Don’t be afraid to leave your child even if they appear upset – they will quickly stop when you have gone • Help your child be independent by teaching them how to get dressed, use the toilet and label all their belongings • Have fun and enjoy your child’s first year at school • Communicate with your child’s teacher – let them see us talking to each other! • Expect your child to come home messy – they play outside in all weathers and will get dirty and messy during the school day!
First Morning at School Please be positive with your children in preparing them for school and explain to them what will happen talk about the teachers, show them our pictures. On arrival it is very helpful if you can show your children where to hang their coats and leave their lunchboxes and bags. After meeting the teacher and some other children and finding a place to sit please leave promptly because your child will pick up any anxiety you may have. Most children, even if initially upset soon become distracted by their surroundings and settle down.
