THE ARTISTS: REBEKAH NOMINATE AN ARTIST We are looking for interesting artists who live in the DAILIDONIS & MICHELLE Nonahood to be featured. If you or someone you know should be nominated to be a Nonahood News Featured Artist, send your nomination to nonahood.to/artist. SVERISSION BY CAMILLE RUIZ MANGUAL PHOTOS COURTESY OF REBEKAH AND MICHELLE Nonahood News: Tell us about your art. Rebekah Dailidonis: We’re Everything Holiday Co., a balloon company that offers custom balloon decor for all events. We are located in Lake Nona but serve all of Central Florida. As a balloon company, our goal is to take your event to new heights. We have been in business for one year and have grown our business tremendously in just that little bit of time. Locally, we've worked with residents and businesses such as Tavistock, Jet Blue, Right at Home, Pure Barre and sev- eral other companies. One thing that's different about us is we use sustainable prod- ucts. Our balloons are 100% biodegradable, made from 100% latex. Latex is harvested without harming the tree. They degrade at the same rate as an oak leaf. We try to be as green and as sustainable as possible. NHN: Why balloons? Michelle Sverission: I love balloon decor for events. They are such a statement piece and really add that wow factor to an event. I always did balloon decor for my kids’ birthdays but never actually thought about doing it professionally. Neighbors after seeing our balloon decor and event planning skills en- couraged us to open a business, and that was the inception of Everything Holiday Co. Last July, I had an incredible opportunity to do an event at the Grand Cypress Hyatt Hotel called Balloon Wonderland for Give Kids The World. We 昀椀lled a 30,000-square-foot corporate venue from 昀氀oor to ceiling with balloon displays towering as high as 24 feet in height. I worked alongside 300 balloon artists from all over the world, and it was an incredible experience. RD: I come from a medical background. I've always been artistic, but that's not what I went into. I saw Michelle doing balloons, and it inspired me to try my hand at balloons. I look back now and giggle at my 昀椀rst attempts because I was clearly a novice. We’ve grown so much from our early days of balloons attached to strip kits. I love what you can do with balloons. Traditionally, you think balloons can look tacky, but if they're done right, you can transform any place into a work of art. NHN: Describe your creative process. RD: We haven’t had it happen yet, but I would love for some- one to come to me and say, “I don't care. Sky's the limit, make it happen.” Traditionally, we are geared towards what our client wants. We start by gathering critical information about the event such as location, time, indoor/outdoor, etc. This is followed by the creative concept that can take a few minutes up to a few days depending on the concept complexity. Many times, I'll sketch something out on a piece of paper, then Michelle transfers the sketch to Canva to create a mockup of what it would look like. NHN: Recent artistic accomplishments? RD: The biggest accomplishment was probably Michelle’s balloon build Balloon Wonderland for Give Kids The World. The event was massive, and it was for such a good cause. We do have several up-and-coming events that we are excited for. One event in particular is the Laureate Park Elementary art night. This is where parents buy their child's painting, and the proceeds go to the art department. Graduation is coming up, and we are sure to be busy. NHN: Most rewarding aspect of this work? MS: Honestly, our customers’ reactions. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into doing a balloon build, no matter how small or how large, there's always a reward at the end to see the customer’s face light up. NHN: Most challenging aspect? MS: Unpredictable weather. Balloons can become delicate when they are outside, so proper planning and praying to the weather gods is a must. NHN: Passions besides art? RD: Outside of my balloon decor and Everything Holiday, I am a neurology nurse practitioner. I work for Nemours, which is located right here in Lake Nona. I'm a mother to a beautiful 2-year-old daughter who keeps me very busy. My husband, daughter and I love to travel and be outdoors. MS: I have a sassy, fun 5-year-old daughter and a sweet, soc- cer loving 9-year-old son. My kids and husband are my every- thing. We love outdoor activities and all the fun our community offers. I’m the Laureate Park Elementary PTA president this year; I’ve been part of the PTA for 4 years now. Hosting school events and bringing happiness to students is just what I enjoy. NHN: Upcoming projects? RD: We can’t speak on it yet, but we are very excited about a project in the works that we feel will be a wonderful addition to our community. NHN: Where can people 昀椀nd you? RD: Our website everythingholidayco.com, Instagram @everythingholidayco, or Facebook. MAY 2023 7
LETTER FROM THE CEO: LAKE NONA IS MAKING HISTORY! Every day, history is being made in our beautiful community. From autono- mous vehicles to medical breakthroughs to incredible small businesses, there is something here for everyone. Most recently, we were privileged to host Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and get his thoughts on “the State of Lake Nona” and how Lake Nona is progressing and impacting Central Florida. We will continue to see thousands of jobs com- ing to our community to join companies like Tavistock, UCF, the VA Hospital, and the multitude of small businesses that are already thriving here. Soon, we will see a 60-acre campus and roughly 2,000 employees from Dis- ney’s Parks, Experiences, and Products division as well as a new Aloft Hotel, incredible SIMCOM Aviation Training facility, and a variety of restaurants and shops. Thursday, May 11, at 8 a.m. will be our monthly Breakfast Connections event at Valencia College's Lake Nona Campus. This month, we will feature a panel discussion on orthopedic health featuring Dr. Vonda Wright, Dr. Anita Vijapura, Dr. Brittany Lambie, and Dr. Pallavi Cherukupally. Monday, May 22, at 11:30 a.m. will be our Nona Professional Ladies luncheon at the Lake Nona Performance Club featuring speaker Brandy Bennett, Board of Directors Chair for the Lake Nona Regional Chamber of Commerce. Friday, May 26, at 11:30 a.m. will be our monthly Business Luncheon featur- ing Stavo Marrero, the Director of Strategic Partnerships for the Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts. All of this growth is happening fast, but it is all with careful contemplation for the character and charm of the area. Together, we can ensure Lake Nona will continue to be a beautiful, family-friendly place where we can all work, live and play. The Lake Nona Regional Chamber of Commerce is always working with business owners and operators to create the community you’ve always wanted. NONA YOUR NEIGHBOR: DR. ERICA IRISH BY CAMILLE RUIZ MANGUAL PHOTOS COURTESY OF DR. ERICA IRISH NHN: What is your job? Erica Irish: I'm a small animal veterinarian at NewDay. I've been in the 昀椀eld for almost 18 years where I started out as a veterinary technician for several years. NHN: What is the most rewarding aspect of your job? EI: I get so much energy from connecting with people and their pets and creating a really strong relationship with them. I'm so excited and honored to have their pets come to me. And I'm honored to do that, so that's really exciting. And, here at the Lake Nona NewDay facility, I get to see the dogs playing in the splash pad and the pool. It's nice to be able to just walk around and go watch these dogs and cats have a really good time. NHN: What got you interested in doing your job? EI: When I was graduating from high school, the counselor asked me where I wanted to go to college and what I wanted to major in. I initially said I didn't know, but I liked animals, so they suggested I be a veterinarian. I wasn't one of those kids who knew they wanted to be a doctor by the age of six. No, there were so many things I wanted to be, but medicine was always really interesting. Then I started getting work as a veterinary technician around 2005/2006. I realized this is de昀椀nitely what I want to do because I can help people, I can help pets, and it's medicine, which is fascinating. Coming to NewDay, I was looking to leave the private practice that I was at last year, so I turned to a social media group to see what places were hiring across Central Florida, and I got invited to check out NewDay. Once I visited, I fell in love with the facility and the people. NHN: Do you have any interesting hobbies, collections or interests? EI: I love being kind of close to the Space Coast and the Kennedy Space Center. I still need to see a rocket launch in person. I have not done that yet! Otherwise, I love cooking. Baking espe- cially. I love to bring treats to my coworkers. I read lots of books and still have a ton of books I need to get through. I'm a mom of two. I just had my second baby a few weeks ago. I love being a mom and I love being a mom to fur babies, too. I have 昀椀ve cats and two dogs. The dogs are Labrador Retrievers; I'm absolutely crazy about any kind of retriever. NHN: Where do you see yourself in the next 昀椀ve years? EI: Most likely still here in Central Florida. It's really a nice place to be, to raise a family, and close to lots of fun things to do besides the theme parks. Maybe doing some kind of leadership and mentoring role? I love the idea of new graduates coming and being able to help them become the veterinarians that they're going to be. I think being patient with people, telling them they're doing a good job, and building people up is huge. I think this is going to be the biggest way we can avoid a lot of the burnout that people feel in veterinary medicine. NHN: How do you maintain work/life balance? EI: A lot of people say, "Oh my gosh, I couldn't be a doctor and a mom and doing all this other stuff," and honestly, I don't know how I do it, either. Every day is different. I try to stay in the mo- ment and be very situationally aware of what's going on around me so that I can gauge people's feelings on things without dwell- ing on anything that's negative. I try to put a positive spin on things, and I 昀椀nd that when I interpret things that way, I'm not taking home as much baggage. Then, at the end of the day, I can take off my doctor hat and I can be a mom, I can be a wife, and not be super stressed about work. I look forward to going to work because of this strategy. NHN: What is your favorite thing about Lake Nona? EI: I like how it's being built up, but there's still space to breathe. It's a beautiful area and eve- rywhere you go or drive to is aesthetically pleasing. There are a lot of families in this area, too, and a lot of the clients that we'll see are either young profes- sionals or adults and their kids. Lake Nona has a bit of a unique dynamic, but at the same time you know people who really care about their pets and are bringing them in and taking good care of them. So, it's a really wonderful place. MAY 2023 1 3

THE WINNING FAMILY: WHAT DO YOU VALUE AS A FAMILY? BY PASTOR RODNEY GAGE he Wall Street Journal recently featured disturbing results T from a national opinion poll on views toward faith, family values, patriotism, hard work and community involvement. Americans' priority for each of these appears to have dropped dramatically over the last few decades. The only value/priority that has increased is America's love of money. They indicate that from 1998 to today, the number of Ameri- cans who say religion is "very important" to them plummeted from 62% to 39%, and those who believe having children is "very important" dropped from 59% to 30%.
