Dear Parents and Players,

It is the start of another high school baseball season and today marks the day our Reed Raiders Baseball family
grows just a bit bigger. It is an exciting time for everyone involved, no matter if this is the start of your
freshmen year or the start of your senior year. The coaching staff is excited to be a part of your son’s journey
through high school and the Raiders Baseball program. We are excited to get back on the field and help your
son grow as a person and as a player.

I tell our players they are special. I want them to know what they have become a part of is not for everyone.
We ask them to do a lot, with the understanding that the reward is something they can take with them well
beyond the baseball field. They hear phrases like “Work Hard – Play Hard!”, “Hard 90!”, and “Double Out of
the Box!” We use words such as: discipline, communication, dedication, effort, selfless. This is the core of
our culture and how we will work through our process.

Our coaching staff has dedicated themselves to developing each player in our program. Our program believes
in practicing together as much as possible. This allows our varsity players to pass on their knowledge to the
younger players as well as give the underclassmen an opportunity to showcase their abilities and put that
knowledge into practice. This helps foster a culture of family as everyone in the program works together every
day.

As coaches, we recognize the vital role you, as a parent, play in making our high school program successful.
Our coaching staff encourages parents to support our program any way they can. Our program is always in
need of volunteers in the concession stand, collecting gate fees, taking pictures, various facilities improvements,
and by participating in the various fundraising activities held by the program. These are great ways to support
our program and players and ensure our continued success.

Included in the following pages are more details about the Reed Raiders Baseball Program, our team standards
– rules – discipline, team schedules, and trip itinerary for our varsity trip to Anaheim, CA (No travel in 2021).
Thank you again for all of your support and we look forward to a great high school baseball season. GO
RAIDERS!!

As always, thank you for your help!

                                            Program Communication
The Coaching Staff is committed to keeping players, parents, alumni, and fans involved with all things going on
in the Reed Raiders Baseball Program. We have established a website, www.reedraidersbaseball.org, to keep
our community up-to-date with our program. This website will also be used as a way for the coaches to get
information to parents in a timely manner (ex: practice or game changes due to weather, upcoming events, etc.).
Scores, stats, game write-ups, and other program information will be updated frequently. We will also post
relevant information to our Facebook page and Twitter pages to keep people updated. We encourage our
players, parents, alumni, and fans to follow us on our website or social media to stay informed of all things
Reed Baseball.

                                            Parent Communication
The coaching staff works countless hours to ensure our players have the best high school baseball experience
possible. Should the need arise; the coaching staff encourages parents to use the following outline for
contacting coaches. With any contact, the coaching staff respectfully asks parents respect the 24-hour rule.
       Student-athlete communication w/appropriate Head Coach
       Student-athlete/Parent communication w/appropriate Head Coach
Student-athlete/Parent/JV Head Coach and Program Head Coach communication

                                            Diamond Club Boosters
The Diamond Club Boosters was formed to allow parents to stay informed and help our program grow. We
encourage all parents to attend our monthly meetings throughout the school year, on the first Wednesday of
every month at 6p in the Room 233 or virtually through Zoom. We use these meetings to discuss our upcoming
fundraisers as well as field improvements and banquet information. This is a great way to get involved in our
program and continue to make our program successful.

                                               Program Standards
In an effort to make sure your son is conforming to the rules of the school and our baseball program standards,
you will be asked to sign and return the following form. It is crucial we establish a system of standards which
are fair and easy to understand. The normal student-athlete will have no trouble following these rules. You
may not agree with the rules or the punishments; I am confident you understand your child must be held
accountable for their actions. Any punishments will not be a problem for the large majority of the players since
it will not affect them.

       1. All policies outlined in the Reed High School Student Handbook apply to each player at all times
          and at all events.
       2. You, as a baseball player, will be held to a higher standard than a regular student…with that in mind,
you will be expected to behave like a gentleman in the classroom and hallways.
       3. You will attend class regularly and be on time.
       4. You are to maintain academic integrity at all times and show respect for teachers.
       5. You are asked to maintain a neat appearance at all times…
           • Follow the school dress code
           • Hair needs to be kept neat as seen fit by the coaches
           • No full beards
           • No jewelry, including earrings or facial piercings (NIAA)
       6. A player who misses practice will not play in games.
       7. If you cannot attend practice, notify A COACH. Please schedule appointments around workouts
when possible. Missing and/or tardiness to practice will result in discipline, up to and including
           dismissal from the program.
       8. The coaching staff reserves the right to discipline any player as they see fit in a consistent manner.
The integrity of the team comes before any individual. Coach Matherly reserves the right to
dismiss any player for poor conduct.
       9. Each player will be asked to control themselves.
       10. There will be NO talking on the bus rides to and from the games. All athletes are required to ride
with the team to and from all games. If a player misses the bus, they will not be able to attend that
game. NO CELL PHONES IN DUGOUT OR ON BUS!!!!
       11. There will be no visitors allowed in the dugouts for any reason. Any violation of this rule will result
in a one (1) game suspension. This means NO PARENTS ON THE FIELD.
       12. Athletes are expected to hustle at all times. Athletes will be immediately removed from the game or
taken out of the lineup of the next game.
       13. The coaching staff reserves the right to monitor a player’s social media accounts. Any post deemed
detrimental to the baseball program, any player, the school, or the like, may be grounds for
disciplinary action, including, but not limited to removal from the baseball program.

Anaheim, CA Trip Rules: NO TRAVEL FOR THE 2021 SEASON
                                    VIOLATION OF TRAINING RULES
   1. This trip is considered a school-related activity; therefore, all the above rules will apply during the entire
trip to Anaheim, CA. If any of the rules are violated, immediate suspension will occur, and the athlete
will be required to leave the team hotel via parent or guardian escort.

   2. All team activities are mandatory. Any individual activities must be done during non-team activity
times. Athletes will only be allowed away from the team when escorted by their parent or legal

“WORK HARD – PLAY HARD”
HOW TO BE A SUCCESFUL RAIDERS BASEBALL PLAYER
  1. Be Early! Being early is being on time. Being on time is late. Being late is your way of showing you
don’t care about us or the mission.
  2. Be Accountable. Excuses are for the mentally weak. If you mess up, we know. Deal with it. Make an
      adjustment and move on.
  3. Be Coachable. The coaches want you to be a success too. Listen and remember what they say. The
coach is right, even when he is wrong.
  4. Be a Great Teammate. Nobody will remember your batting average. They will remember your
kindness toward them in the locker room.
  5. Be a Servant Leader. When the best players will do the smallest task, we are on the path to success.
  6. Have Courage. Have the courage to be “The Man.”
  7. Learn to Compete. If you have the ability to run to your car or ride home, you didn’t do enough during
      practice.
  8. Respect the opponent, but more importantly respect The Game. The game is the opponent and “IT”
knows. The Game knows if you respect it or not.
  9. Communicate at all times about everything. On and off the field.
  10. Don’t whine or mope. Your body language screams, it never whispers. Everyone wants to play. What
do you do with your opportunities?
  11. Get 1% better each day. Learn daily!
  12. Find a way to be good at something. Be the best on the team at one thing. When you master it, find
something else to be good at.
  13. Wherever you are, be ALL there.
  14. Love hard work!
  15. Do more than you are supposed to do. Work early, work during, work late.
  16. Focus on the process and not the outcome.
  17. Prepare like a pro, play like a little leaguer. Have passion for what you do.
  18. Know your role. You don’t have to accept it and we hope your role grows as you grow as a player.
  19. Make this a large part of your life. It has to mean something. It has to sting when we lose and cause
      great joy when we win.
  20. Believe and live MUDITA. The Japanese word for happiness for others. You must learn to have joy for
      the success of other players.

DEFINITION OF “PLAY HARD” – TO PLAY 100%, WHEN 100% IS NEEDED. TO PLAY SMART, TO
USE TRAINING, AND TO DO WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO. TO PLAY FOR THE GUY NEXT
TO YOU AND TO ACHIEVE THE MISSION.
