ABOUT THE FESTIVAL DES ARTS DE SAINT-SAUVEUR A firm belief in the fundamental importance of culture in our society has brought the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur into the ranks of major arts and culture events staged in Quebec and the rest of Canada each year. FASS is now the largest regional dance presenter in the country, both in terms of the number of large-scale shows it presents and the size of its attendance. For nearly 30 years, the Festival has welcomed the greatest artists of dance and music on the national and international scene in the enchanting setting of the village of Saint-Sauveur. The Festival’s artistic direction has been orchestrated by Guillaume Côté since 2014. His experience, along with the expertise acquired in his career as a dancer, composer and choreographer, have led him to affirm the mandate of the Festival while putting added emphasis on creation, diver- sity and support for Quebec artists. Founded in 1992 as the Festival des Arts Hiawatha, the Festival was renamed the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur in 1997. The Festival first received recognition at the Grands Prix du Tourisme des Laurentides awards, with a special mention as Cultural Event of the Year in 2000, and has received the “Grand Prix du Tourisme des Laurentides” in 2007, 2008 and 2014. In 2009 FASS was awarded the “Prix Ambassadeur culturel des Laurentides” in the Cultural Festivals and Events category. For its 2020 edition, FASS was awarded the Prix Opus in the Specialist Presenter of the Year category. Under the leadership of Etienne Lavigne as Executive Director, it has contributed actively to laying the foundations of a genuine cultural hotspot with a reputation that extends well beyond the geographical boundaries of the Laurentians. OUR MISSION The Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the discovery and presentation of the best choreographers, dancers and musicians. Through its eclectic, inclusive, accessible and original programming, the Festival seeks to support and inspire artists from Canada and around the world, and to introduce audiences to their work and passion in an intimate setting.
RADICALE VITALITÉ BALLET WITH NO INTERMISSION LENGTH 60 minutes WORLD PREMIERE June 23, 2018, at the Venice Biennale of Contemporary Dance Marie Chouinard delved into the company’s repertoire to compose a new work consisting of solos and duets. She brought a new perspective to these small choreographic forms and recreated them: new costumes or sound environments, new choreographic adaptations, etc. She also unearthed certain projects which, until then, had remained on the pages of the choreographer’s notebooks. And she created two brand new duets. These 16 dance miniatures of 1 to 13-minute duration have become stand-alone pieces in a long and profound creative process. Radical vitality, that is, radical from the Latin radix, root. 1 LAST PART (ÉTUDE NO 1, 2001) 13 MIN 22 S Dancer for the world premiere: Lucie Mongrain Dancer: Carol Prieur 2 LOVE ATTACK #2 (CHORALE, 2003) 2 MIN 17 S Dancers for the world premiere: Isabelle Poirier and James Viveiros Dancers: Luigi Luna and Rose Gagnol 3 PETITE DANSE SANS NOM (1980) 1 MIN 19 S Dancer for the world premiere: Marie Chouinard Dancer: Paige Culley 4 ROYAL BELL (ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE, 2008) 1 MIN 16 S Dancer for the world premiere: Lucie Mongrain Dancer: Carol Prieur 5 UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT (ÉTUDE POIGNANTE, 1998) 3 MIN 03 S Dancer for the world premiere: Carol Prieur Dancer: Celeste Robins 6 PAIDEIA DUET (LES TROUS DU CIEL, 1991) 2 MIN 39 S Dancers for the world premiere: Benoît Lachambre and Heather Mah Dancers: Jossua Collin Dufour and Carol Prieur

MARIE CHOUINARD AND THE COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD Marie Chouinard, choreographer, is the Executive and Artistic Director PHOTO : RICHARD TREMBLAY of COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD, Founding Chair of the Prix de la Danse de Montréal, an Associate Dance Artist of the Canada’s National Arts Centre and Director of Dance at the Venice Biennale. Today, COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUI- NARD enjoys an international reputation. Its trajectory began in 1978, when Marie Chouinard presented her first creation, Cristallisation. This work was followed by thirty solos performed on stage at home and abroad, including Marie Chien Noir (1982), S.T.A.B. (Space, Time and Beyond) (1986), and Afternoon of a Faun (1987), landmarks in contem- porary dance of the past 40 years. In 1986, the soloist and choreographer founded her own company. Since that time, COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD has performed all over the world, and co-produces its creations with renowned partners such as the Venice Biennale, the ImPulsTanz Inter- national Dance Festival (Vienna), the Théâtre de la Ville (Paris), the Fondazione Musica Per Roma (Rome), Place des Arts (Montreal), Festival TransAmériques (Montreal) and the National Arts Centre (Ottawa). In 2007, the COMPAGNIE moved to its own building, Espace Marie Chouinard, in Montreal. For Marie Chouinard, each creation is an odyssey through the history of humanity that evades the linearity of a narrative. The intimate intelligence of the body, the inexhaustible complexity of its articulations and mutations command constructions that are achieved through form. The choreographer is thoroughly engaged in every aspect of a work, from music to scenography, lighting, costumes, and hairstyles, so they resonate with each other in a whole with great power of evocation. Hailed for their technique, versatility and performance skills, the ten permanent dancers of the COMPAGNIE, trained in different somatic approaches, bring Marie Choui- nard’s iconic works to the stage. The award-winning dancer Carol Prieur celebrated her 20th anniversary with the COMPAGNIE in 2015. The COMPAGNIE has a vast repertoire of works, most still performed internatio- nally: The Rite of Spring, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, 24 Preludes by Chopin, Le Cri du monde, Étude no 1, bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS, HENRI MICHAUX : MOUVE- MENTS, Soft virtuosity, still humid, on the edge, HIERONYMUS BOSCH: THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS and RADICAL VITALITY, SOLOS AND DUETS. The Rite of Spring has been performed for almost 25 years and become a classic in the history of contempo- rary dance. The choreographer’s works also appear in the repertoires of major ballet compa- nies such as the National Ballet of Canada, the São Paulo Companhia dance, the Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the GöteborgsOperan and the Gulbenkian Ballet.
Moreover, since 2015, Marie Chouinard has created works for other companies, such as the Martha Graham Dance Company and Ballets de Monte-Carlo. In 2009, Marie Chouinard, the dancer, returned to the stage after a 20 years absence with her solo creation morning glories :)-(: and since 2012, has danced IN MUSEUM, a three-hour solo performance-installation. An author, set and lighting designer, photographer and film director, her opus includes multimedia works (Cantique no 3, Icônes, and CORPS CÉLESTES) films (bODY_ rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS, MARIE CHOUINARD: THE RITE OF SPRING, and the music video Jamais by Serge Fiori), a collection of poems entitled Chantier des extases, the photo-installation Paradisi Gloria, and an art exhibit entitled DRAWINGS. In 2015, Marie Chouinard designed CANTIQUE, a first application for iPad and iPhone, free from the App Store. In 2019, ZÉRO DOUZE (380 pages) by Marie Chouinard is published by les éditions du passages. A true cultural ambassador for Quebec, Marie Chouinard has received several awards and distinctions in recognition of her contribution to the arts, including the Bessie Award (New York, 2000), the Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal (2006), the title of Officer of the Order of Canada (2007), the title of Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (France, 2009, 2019), the Denise Pelletier Award (Quebec, 2010), the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec Award for best choreography for THE GOLDEN MEAN (LIVE) (2012), the Samuel de Champlain Award (France, 2014), the title of Compa- nion of the Ordre national des arts et des lettres du Québec (2015), the title of Chevalier of the Ordre national du Québec (2015), the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement (Canada, 2016), the Positano «Choreographer of the Year» Award (Italy, 2016) and the Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts (Canada, 2016). The name of Marie Chouinard became a dictionary entry in Le Petit Larousse, illus- trated edition, in 2010 and in Le Robert in 2011.
