Welcome to the Science and Engineering Faculty and to the Bachelor of Urban Development. What do you need to know about your degree? The Bachelor of Urban Development course code is UD01. You will undertake 32 units, 8 units each year, over the 4 years of your degree. Full time study per academic year is 96 credit points; 48 credit points each semester. Each QUT unit is worth 12 credit points, and you need to achieve 384 credits points to be awarded the Bachelor of Urban Development (Honours). Bachelor of Urban Development Course Learning Outcomes These are the skills that you will be expected to learn and demonstrate during your degree. 1) Demonstrate advanced cognitive skills to apply COGNITIVE SKILLS analytic and creative solutions to field-related problems. 2) Demonstrate broad knowledge in one or more discipline KNOWLEDGE areas and advanced knowledge in one major discipline area including related project and research methods. 3) Demonstrate coherent communication of knowledge, COMMUNICATION & ETHICS ideas and creative solutions for diverse contexts and audiences. INDEPENDENCE AND 4) Exhibit accountable collaborative and independent COLLABORATION behaviours using initiative and judgement. Bachelor of Urban Development Course Students must complete 384 credit points (cps) consisting of: Core Units (72 cps) 6 core units Major (216 cps) 18 major specific units Complementary 8 units to complement your studies. Studies (96 cps) Choice of 1 x Second Major (8 units) OR 2 x Minors (each 4 units) What do I study in my degree? You will study one of three majors in the Bachelor of Urban Development (Urban and Regional Planning, Construction Management or Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering). You choose your Second Major or Minors at the start of your second year. You can select a second major, comprising of 8 units or two minors (4 units each). The units of your complementary studies can deepen your knowledge by studying in a field that extends the understanding of your major, or you can explore other fields by choosing a university wide minor. You can choose from a range of second majors and minors within the Urban Development disciplines as long as the second major or minor is not the same discipline as your study area A for example: Construction Management and Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering students can choose: • Urban and Regional Planning Second Major • Property Second Major • Urban and Regional Planning Studies Minor • Property Development Minor • Property Investment and Finance Minor • Property Valuation Minor Urban and Regional Planning students can choose: • Urban Development Construction Second Major • Property Second Major • Residential Construction Minor • Administration in Construction Minor • Building Economics Minor • Property Development Minor • Property Investment and Finance Minor • Property Valuation Minor Bachelor of Urban Development (Honours) UD01
Or you can select from a range of secondary study areas from other complementary disciplines including: • Accountancy Second Major • Applied Economics and Finance Second Major • Architectural Studies • Language Minors – University wide options • University Wide Minor Options Note: A Major is also referred to as Study Area A Second Major/Minor is also referred to as Study Area B/Complementary studies/Secondary studies Work Integrated Learning and Placement (work experience) • Work Integrated Learning (WIL) provides student with an opportunity to build professional experience, make industry contacts and develop an understanding of workplace culture. Our students gain a valuable 'real world' experience through internships with industry partners. • WIL allows you to graduate with a portfolio of professional skills that provides evidence of your professional competencies. • If you do a major in either Construction Management, or Quantity Surveying and Cost Engineering you are required to undertake a minimum of 80 days of approved work placement. • If you do a major in Urban and Regional Planning you are required to undertake a minimum of 14 days of approved work placement, per WIL unit within a minimum 10 week period. • Your WIL unit should be completed in your third year of study, however, you may commence your work placement once you have completed 96 credit points if you are able to do so. You need to complete the Change to Enrolment Form (CR form) (online form). Census Date 24 March 2017 This is the date in each teaching period by which you need to have your enrolment requirements finalised. Failure to satisfy your enrolment requirements will result in cancellation of your enrolment. Withdrawing from Units 24 March 2017 This is the last date you can withdraw from a unit without incurring financial penalty. Withdrawal after this date will incur full fees. 5 May 2017 This is the last date you can withdraw from a unit without incurring an academic penalty.
