Recognition Assembly Unstructured Play Unlike previous years, Recognition Day Assembly was not conducted ‘live’, due to the Covid-19 situation. Instead, there was a virtual short ceremony to recognise two groups of students for their achievements in 2020. The first group of students were those who had done exceptionally well in their CCAs. The second group of students were the Queens Graduates, who have excelled in academic, character and co-curricular areas. The awards were: • CCA Meritorious Awards • CCA Outstanding Individual Award • Colours Award (graduating students) • Sports Boy and Sports Girl • Outstanding Health and Fitness Class • Champion House Award • Outstanding Queens Graduate Awards In line with the national effort to promote physical and mental health among children and youth, our school aims to nurture the whole child by giving them a platform to build strong minds, hearts and bodies. Students are given the time and space to explore their own interests in the Arts, sports, dabble in handicraft or simply enjoy interaction among their peers whilst engaging in board games. As students participate in unstructured play within a safe school environment, they indirectly empower themselves to form teams, work towards a common goal, discover ways to improve, explore problem-solving methods, develop creativity, innovate and eventually experience success through diligence. Unstructured play is factored into the curriculum every Wednesday through an extended recess and recreation period. Many areas in school are made available for students to engage in these meaningful activities. 52 • Queensway Secondary School Queensway Secondary School • 53

Staff Awards HBL (Year In Review) The world was rocked this year by the Covid-19 pandemic, and terms like ‘circuit breaker’ and ‘social distancing’ entered common vocabulary. Following MOE guidelines, Queensway responded by commencing a programme of Home-Based Learning in April. Students continued to engage with their teachers and with their schoolmates through video conferencing tools such as Zoom and online learning platforms such as the Student Learning Space. Despite the difficulties posed by the removal of the physical learning environment, our Queenswayans demonstrated admirable resilience and adaptability, and responded to the challenges in an enthusiastic and innovative manner. Prefectorial Board Prefect Master Mr Ng Ching Siang EXCO (July 2019- March 2020) EXCO (June 2020-) Head Prefect Poon Jian Ming, Paul (401) Head Prefect Ingrid Irawady (301) Deputy Head Prefect Chelladurai Kamalini (402) Deputy Head Prefect Lim Zheng Rui, Justin (301) Deputy Head Prefect Preethy Palani (402) Deputy Head Prefect See Yi Kher Claire (304) Head of Admin Thwun Thiri Thu (401) Head of External Events Arini Fabriana (304) Head of Events Tan Elwin (401) Head of Logistics Tiara Binte Mastor (304) Head of Logistics Praveen Segar (413) Head of Programmes Yeo Hui Ting, Chloe (301) Head of Welfare Rika Miyachi (401) Head of Publicity & Welfare Li Xinyi (301) 2020 has been an interesting year for the Prefectorial Board. Led by Head Prefect Poon Jian Ming, Paul of 401, and driven by the motto “To Lead is To Serve”, Prefectorial duties started on the very first day of school as we welcomed our juniors into the Queensway family with a specially curated orientation programme. The orientation programme took place over a span of three days and included class games, house competitions and a school tour. The orientation programme ended with a campfire led by the Board together with their peers from the House Committee. Planning and executing the orientation programme was indeed a mammoth task but nonetheless a rewarding experience as the prefects learnt how to organise events systematically. Our prefects not only learnt to build interpersonal relationships among themselves but with other students and teachers. Most importantly, the experience not only gave the prefects a platform to hone their leadership skills but gave them the confidence to take on more leadership roles. Apart from their day-to-day and school event duties, our prefects, in particular senior prefects were also involved in organising training programmes such as the Project Management and Facilitation Camp held during the March break and the Fundamental Leadership Camp for Sec 1 and 2 prefects, which will be held during the coming year-end holidays. Undeterred by Covid-19, the Board continued to conduct meetings and planning sessions via new platforms such as Zoom. Through their meetings, they have put together interesting plans for 2021. A highlight for the Prefectorial Board came in Term 3. Fresh from being back after the full home- based learning programme, three candidates from the Board, Ingrid Irawady, Lim Zheng Rui, Justin and See Yi Kher Claire campaigned before the school for the position of Head Prefect. Due to Covid-19 management measures, the three candidates together with their respective teams had to source for alternative platforms to campaign. The ended with a polling day which saw the school coming together to vote, with Ingrid Irawady of 301 elected as Head Prefect 2020/2021. In Term 3, our trainee prefects were also officially appointed as Prefects after one semester of probation and training. It was a proud moment for our senior prefects who had meticulously been playing an instrumental role in guiding, grooming and mentoring the trainee prefects. Overall, it has been a meaningful and challenging year for the prefects as they often have had to manage both their studies and CCAs, but they have always risen to the occasion, accomplishing tasks successfully. With passion and dedication as their guiding force, the prefects will continue to uphold the school’s core values of discipline, respect, responsibility and excellence. 60 • Queensway Secondary School Queensway Secondary School • 61
