INTRODUCTION There has never been a better time to re-imagine or redesign your home. Whether you are looking to do a few little “touch-ups” to your home or you are finally ready to take the plunge with a major renovation, our hope is that this 2018 Summer Home Design Trends guide will give you some new ideas for inspiration. Kitchens and bathrooms remain the top rooms for home remodeling projects this spring and that is expected to continue. Replacement windows, flooring, and doors are also popular items for a new, fresh look for homes. Dive in and explore the trends that home remodeling projects are following in 2018! Kitchens The kitchen is the first stop for the majority of homeowners who decide it’s finally time for a remodel. Many people have had the thought, “I can’t stand this kitchen any more!” Believe it or not, that is one of the top reasons why people decide to remodel their kitchen. The kitchen countertops are usually the first target, followed by the cabinetry. Additional storage space for kitchen items is another attractive reason for remodeling. Another big trend in the industry is that many more homeowners are opting for an L-shaped kitchen redesign, although the U-shaped kitchen layout still retains the top spot. KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS The kitchen countertop is the centerpiece of the home when it comes to remodeling. In fact, 94% of all kitchen renovations in 2017 included the countertops, making it the most popular item for homeowners to replace. While granite and hardwood countertops remain extremely popular, one item that is growing in popularity is laminate countertops. Laminate A laminate countertop is easy to install, easy to clean and affordable. If you choose a do-it-yourself option, you can reduce the cost of your kitchen renovation even more with laminate. Laminate is also versatile enough to be used in the kitchen, bath, laundry room or any other room in the house! Why choose laminate? • Affordable: Installed granite can cost as much as $120 per square foot, with laminate running from $14 to $38 per linear foot. • Easy to Clean: Soap and water is suitable for cleaning laminate. No resealing or specialty cleaning products required. • Versatile: Use for any countertop in any space. • Sanitary: Medical facilities choose laminate countertops over natural stone because laminate does not harbor bacteria and meets sanitation standards. • Sustainable: Built from FSC certified providers. Paper-based, sustainably harvested and 2 renewable.
KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS (CONTINUED) Laminate Trends The laminate countertop industry is evolving rapidly as it gains in popularity. One provider will release a laminate countertop in late 2018 that will wirelessly recharge smart phones and other technologies. Other trending advances: • Scratch-resistant laminates • Finishes that give the texture of stone • “Writable” surfaces - great for kids! • Ability to add under mount sinks • Profile edges that eliminate the “brown line” commonly found in laminates Gray was the most popular color for kitchen laminates for a long time, but it seems to be declining a bit in favor of white. Here are the top colors from some of our suppliers: WILSONART GULFPORT • Blackstar Granite • Butterrum Granite • Calcutta Marble • Jamocha Granite • Bianco Romano • Carrara Bianco KITCHEN CABINETS Custom colorization looks to be one of the top trends in kitchen cabinetry for 2018. Many homeowners are opting for custom color schemes rather than settling for a straight-out-of-the-box look. Customization doesn’t end with the colors. Homeowners and designers are also upgrading to include the cabinet drawer pulls to fit their preferred decor: • Standard 3” & 5” Pulls • 12” Appliance Pull • 1-1/4” Knob • 1-5/8” Knob • 96 mm Cup • 128 mm Drop 3
KITCHEN CABINETS (CONTINUED) KITCHEN ORGANIZING Three out of four homeowners say de-cluttering the kitchen counters is the main reason for their renovation. A lot of builders are opting for interior organizers inside their new cabinetry. Others like the addition of our Platinum Shaker, either as an extra corner cabinet or for designing a Belcastle Merrick Sedona Stanton kitchen island. EASY-INSTALL CABINET ORGANIZERS • Pullout Cookware & Lid Organizers: Roll-out drawers, install with just four screws. • Pullout Wire Baskets: Mounts to cabinet bottom or shelf. • U-Shaped Tray Organizers: Great for baking sheets, muffin tins, pizza trays & more! • Cabinet Door-Mount Trays: De-clutter cabinets with these interior-mounted trays. • Single-Shelf Lazy Susan: Perfect for organizing dry goods, cans, bottles & jars. • 3-Tier Spice Pull-down: Simple pull-down trays to organize spices. • Stemware & Wine Bottle Racks: Mounts beneath cabinets for easy access. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: PLATINUM SHAKER • Beautiful craftsmanship • European concealed hinges • Full-extension drawer glides • Solid hardwood frame • Butt-style doors (no center stile = easier access) • Soft close door hinges & under-mount drawer glides Bathrooms Bathrooms are the second-most common room of the house when it comes to remodeling. The continuing trend for 2018 is the use of neutral colors, such as gray and beige. For a brighter bathroom, plain white remains the favorite. VANITIES & SINKS Vanity countertops are usually the starting point for a bathroom redesign. • Seamless Lines • Neutral or “Earth” Colors 4
VANITIES & SINKS (CONTINUED) • Small Pieces • Functionality • Stone or Marble Countertops: Contrast with natural wood cabinets • Composite Granite: An alternative material available in all stores • Stainless-Steel Sink Kits: Includes faucet, sink & strainer • “Single Bowl Offset” Stainless Steel Sink: New style available • Vitreous China: Specially-coated porcelain sink-tops and toilets add sparkle to a neutral bathroom TOILETS Toilets have not changed much over the years, with standard round and oval bowls remaining extremely popular. One new trending item is the Rio II ADA Compliant Elongated Bowl. Combined with the Rio White Rectangular Pedestal Lavatory Sink, it makes a beautiful pairing that is unique enough stand apart from standard bathroom fixtures: • Two-piece white toilet • Low water consumption • Vitreous china with gloss finish • Smoothly-sculptured rectangular sink All of our toilets are designed as “water savers” with 1.28-gallon flushes. TUBS & SHOWERS Two trends stand out when it comes to tubs and showers in 2018: Minimalist design and “Old World” style. Sax freestanding tubs are a top seller. The advantage of these beautiful tubs is that they can be placed anywhere and can become a centerpiece of the homeowner’s bathroom. It has a comfortable backrest and deck space for the faucet. For showers, the Halo line has become extremely popular. These shower doors offer great value for a clean look. Plus, they are quick and easy to install. Another popular trend is the barn-door style of sliding glass shower doors, also available in the Halo line. 5
Flooring & Walls White and gray tones for flooring and walls continue to dominate the market because of they way they brighten a room with natural light. One new trend is that matte black is starting to gain in popularity, especially as a floor or wall tile. Blue is starting to make its way into more homes, especially on accent pieces but also on kitchen backsplashes, shower wall tiles and porcelain floor tiles. PATTERNS & SHAPES Bigger tiles are in for 2018! The days of 12-inch tile are nearly over, due to decreased demand. Technological breakthroughs in the tile industry now allow manufacturers to create polished porcelain tiles that have the appearance of true Carrara Marble or Travertine Stone. The cost savings for these floor and wall tiles make them much more attractive for remodels than natural stone, which is also porous. Porcelain is more stain-resistant, so it’s making big inroads in the tile space of the market. Decorative wall tiles with geometric patterns are making a splash with homeowners as well. A combination of four 6”x6” tiles comes together to make an eye-pleasing pattern. Hexagonal porcelain tiles are growing in popularity as well, usually in a smaller 8-inch format. The porcelain construction makes it extremely versatile and suitable for kitchens, baths and laundry rooms. FLOORING & WALL MATERIALS Luxury Vinyl Tile Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is the new champion of the flooring industry. Within the LVT product line, the Vinyl Plank is the flooring type that has seen the most rapid growth. This type of flooring gives that appearance of wood, but it is a water-resistant product. Vinyl Plank comes in two styles: • Dry Back: This style of Vinyl Plank is glued down and is primarily used in commercial spaces. Available in several thicknesses and scratch-resistant wear layers. • Floating Floor or “Click”: No adhesive required, which makes this form 6
FLOORING & WALLS (CONTINUED) of Vinyl Plank more DIY-friendly! With a wide variety of colors, lengths and widths, this is a strong product that’s expected to continue growing in popularity through 2018. Laminate Flooring Laminate flooring is still a strong candidate, even though it has been toppled from its perch as the market king by LVT. Laminate is still more scratch-resistant than Vinyl Planks and it has more of a “real wood” appearance. However, laminate has lacked the water-resistant qualities of LVT -- until now. Manufacturers are building a Water Resistant Laminate and it is expected to become more popular through 2018. FLOORING FAQ So how do you decide which type of flooring is best for each room in the home? Consider these questions before starting any flooring remodel: • Will water be an issue in this room? Wood-based products should be avoided in rooms that are certain to get wet from time to time. Ceramic, vinyl or porcelain are better choices for these rooms. Tile is always the best choice for a bathroom. • Is this room in a climate-controlled environment? Temperature and humidity can make a major impact on the life of your flooring. Many hardwood, laminate and LVT products require a specific atmosphere to maintain their longevity. Extreme temperature changes, for example, can cause “Floating Floor” Vinyl Planks to expand or contract, creating the dreaded buckling or cupping effects. Gaps can also appear between planks when the locking mechanism fails. • What type of foot traffic will the room have? The busier the space is, the more suitable wear-, stain- and scratch-resistant products will be for it. • Is the room in a residential or commercial building? Different flooring products are available for each type of space, and you’ll want the one that is most suitable for your project. Armstrong’s Diamond 10™ is one of the best in the industry for commercial flooring applications. • Is this an adult’s space or a child’s space? For a child’s bedroom or playroom, you will want to choose more durable flooring products. Stain- and 7 scratch-resistant products work best.
Windows New windows remain one of the best investments you can make if you’re looking to sell a home. Vinyl windows will continue to dominate the market through 2018, due to their easy DIY installation and classic styling. The Comfort View 900 series is a strong choice for both new construction and replacement windows. VINYL WINDOWS Comfort View’s 900 series has a 3-1/4-inch frame depth, making it perfect for replacement windows. The rigid frames on these vinyl windows help ensure proper installation for newly-constructed homes. Available in four colors: Other standard features of the Comfort View 900 • White series include: • Almond • Block & tackle balances • Clay • Balance covers • Bronze (with white interiors) • Built-in J-channel • Tilt-in sash for easy cleaning JELD-WEN GRILLE PATTERNS Farmhouse-style homes remain extremely popular in more rural areas for new home designs. One of the best ways to distinguish this style of homes is through the Prairie Grille, a style patterned after Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie School Designs. These beautiful grille patterns are available from JELD-WEN. • 4-piece grilles with larger center piece • Available in vertical casement or standard size • Top One-Third Grilles: Often used in Double-Hung Windows • GBG: Grilles-Between-The-Glass, easier to clean, grilles protected from the elements WINDOW TRIM Window trim is a design element that allows you to accent both the interior and the exterior of the home. JELD-WEN window trims from the Modern Designs line are long-lasting and beautiful options. Interior Trim • Can be matched to any wood element inside the home, such as floors or cabinetry 8
WINDOWS (CONTINUED) • White continues to trend as a popular trim color • White paired with medium to dark wall colors adds distinction and contrast Exterior Trim • Adds depth to windows • Can be finished or painted to match accents • Adds emphasis to grille patterns Doors A trend with home entryway doors that we are seeing is that more people are opting for an “Old World” style of design, which incorporates arches, natural wood (or Aurora® fiberglass to mimic wood), metal accents and creative glassware. Wood is also making a comeback for interior doors, as well as patio doors. OLD WORLD ENTRYWAY DOORS Old World doors incorporate masculine and feminine traits and give a more “aged” appearance to the home. Unique styling from Finer Doors incorporates some or all of the following traits for an Old World flavor: • Metal Accents: These can include “speakeasy” grilles which open, as opposed to a peephole; large round- or diamond-shaped clavos (Spanish for “nails”); door knockers; and rail, radius and corner straps. • Glass: Glass designs with caming are another popular Old World style. Caming is the metal banding which joins panes of glass together. Created with intricate custom designs and patterns, caming can provide you with a truly one-of-a-kind entryway door. • Arches: If the interior of the home has arched hallways, an arched doorway is a nice Old World complement. A single-arch door can include raised panels, clavos or glass. • Raised Panels: Old World designs are never “flat.” Raised paneling for standard doors or curved paneling for an arched door add style and depth to an entry door. • Accent Carvings: People who opt for real wood doors can add an extra Old World flavor with accent carvings. Floral motifs, family crests or initials are popular accent carvings for Old World doors. 9
DOORS (CONTINUED) INTERIOR DOORS White continues to be one of the most popular colors for interior doors, although natural wood is making a comeback in this area as well. Hand-brushed finishings give the best result over natural wood doors. When the hand-brushing cures, these doors can be enjoyed for many years to come. One style that stands out for interior doors, much like we see in showers, is the “barn door” style. Natural wood on rails in this style has become more popular, because it eliminates the need for hinges and saves wear and tear that homeowners see with a hinged door. PATIO DOORS With patio doors, the trend continues to be a lot of glass to let in natural light, set in natural wood. Diamonds or turned squares are popular for the glass fixtures. Keeping the same grille pattern and trim as the home’s windows is of course a necessity for overall design purposes. Hinged patio doors, like these from Modern Craftsman, are still a more popular trend than sliding doors on newer home designs. Conclusion E.C.
