Two New Habitat Families! Meet the Graham’s oldest is starting high school this year. In four years she will be moving on and I don’t want her to have to worry about money I have spent the last when going to college/university. All I wanted to do was save eight years of my life money to buy our own home but when the housing market rose, trying to rebuild. I I knew I would never own my own home. lost everything due to an ex-husband who I was speaking with a co-worker that attended a Simcoe County accumulated debt, and Home Builders Association meeting and spoke to someone from once we signed the Habitat for Humanity. As I made decent money, I thought I separation agreement would never qualify for a Habitat house, but he told me to apply he filed bankruptcy, anyway. I did and when I was accepted and moved onto the leaving me with all the second step, I was so excited to tell my kids that we all cried! I debt built up during cannot express in words what making it this far means to me! our marriage. My I see Habitat as that program that will help me give my kids a savings, investments, sense of pride and ownership in having their own home again. our home. Everything. Gone. I thought that When I explained the details of the Habitat house to my kids and was it! that I would have to put in ‘sweat equity’ hours, they asked how My children and I have many hours they can put in. They want to help! They want to feel been bounced around from rental house to rental house during, like this new home is truly theirs. All of us will benefit from a and due to a string of bad luck we have lived in six houses in Habitat house. It would be a way for all of us to put down roots eight years. I have spent so much of my life trying to provide a and not only have a house but for the first time in eight years…a stable, warm home for my two children but when we were forced home. to move due to disrepair, pests and untreated mould issues it was very upsetting. Add to that the cost of renting, I felt like I was never going to get ahead. Thank you! I want to be able to continue to contribute to our RESP as my Tara Graham & Family Meet the Campbell’s As a kid I did a lot of things with my family but we also moved around a lot. I chose to get into trouble. I moved to British Columbia for 20 years and that’s where life fell apart; becoming an addict and having no cares took its toll on life, bad credit, no trust from family and hatred towards myself. I moved back to Ontario in 2011, given one last chance from my family to change and that is what I did. I met my wife Christine in 2012. We have created a strong family unit that helps one- another as often as possible. Christine has recently applied to Georgian College and I truly believe she will excel! Christine has two children that have such big hearts, empathy for others and strive to please. We hope to teach our children important life skills as well as learning what comes with owning a home and all the responsibilities that go with it. We also look forward to supporting the ReStore so others can have a chance. We are looking forward to putting in our ‘sweat equity’ hours for ourselves and for others. This is something that will be educational and forever knowledge we can share with our friends, family and community. Thank you! Chris, Christina & Family
Kitchens to Homes has Officially Launched! The ability to serve families in our community is our top priority. We are always looking for ways to the number of homes available. With that in mind, we were proud to launch our Kitchens to Homes program in July where a team of skilled volunteers will remove your kitchen, which will be sold in one of our ReStores, and leave your space contractor ready. Our team of volunteers have learned from the very best kitchen salvage crews at Habitat for Humanity stores in Niagara and Mississauga. They have been provided with all the equipment and tools they need to do the job. Have granite counters? We have the equipment to soften the epoxy joints and safely remove it from your home. How can you donate your kitchen you ask? That’s simple too – just visit our website at HabitatHuronia.com for more information or get in touch with our scheduling team. Don’t forget to tell your friend and help us in our mission; “Always thinking families first”. Centre Street Build Complete Centre St. is now complete and it is truly a marvel of what a community, when engaged, can create. This incredible semi- detached will now be home to two deserving families. Our community dedication and strong engagement is what makes our mission possible. From the very beginning we received numerous donations; Tacoma Engineering donating the drawings for permits, Skelton Brumwell designing the Plot Plan, Eisses Bros. donating the excavating, Northern Plumbing Bayfield Ford Build Day Nando’s Lunch Sponsor donating the rough and finished plumbing, Tilemaster donating the tiles, Ferndale Trim and Doors donating the trim and doors, James Hardie donating the exterior siding, Brayford Sod donating the grass….you get the idea. What I have left out is the countless discounts we’ve been given from all of our trade partners, and the seemingly endless amount of volunteer hours put in by our amazing volunteers. The project dealt with silly weather, delivery and scheduling issues, but everyone involved came together to make this dream a reality for two families. This is a project that brought Hooligans Lunch Sponsor RBC Build Day a lot of people together and couldn’t have been accomplished without everyone’s participation. The design will provide the optimal living space on 3 floors with individual carports, storage and a grassed common area. This will be an incredible boost to help address Barrie’s affordable housing crisis but it will require more community support than ever. In addition to our volunteer army, contributions from the ReStore, our Fund for Humanity and generous suppliers that donate materials we will need to raise $735,000. We need your support. Volunteer Spotlight If you follow us on Facebook and Instagram then this volunteer is no stranger to you! Meet James – the star of our Wednesday posts from the Barrie ReStore! James has been with us for nearly two years after relocating to Barrie with his family. Two days a week you’ll find James doing various jobs around the ReStore and having a great time. Next time you’re in the store stop and say hello – you’ll be greeted with the best smile ever!! There are volunteers and then there is Ellen! You may have seen Ellen at the Alliston Home and Lifestyle Show in the spring using her talents to upcycle a small table and inspire you to do the same. Ellen has recently turned her talents to upcycling items in the Alliston ReStore, creating beautiful items for your home. Look at this beautiful small hutch (that sold in just days), she even painted the accessories on it. Thanks Ellen! First Annual Upcycle Cup Challenge This spring at our Barrie and Alliston Home Shows, we had some fabulous furniture upcycled by local businesses. Each team from Catherine Staples Interiors, Ferndale Trim & Doors, The Chilton Team and Upscaled Utopia selected a piece from the ReStore and then took them drab to fab with the goal to raise funds for our Centre Street build. They started as distressed but solid pieces of furniture that needed vision to see what they could become! Visitors to both home shows were amazed at the transformations – some anxious to try their hand at upcycling their own furniture; others were anxious to buy these stunning pieces. Want to be part of the next challenge? Contact lisa@habitathuronia.com. Stay tuned for the 2019 Upcycle Cup Challenge appearing at the Spring Home Shows in Barrie & Alliston.
Events Habitat has been very busy this spring and summer! We were at: • Bradford Clean-Up Day • Cookstown Wing-Ding • Sandy Cove • Briar Hill • Boots & Hearts • Potato Festival • Carrot Fest We had a great time speaking with other organizations, and talking to the public about what Habitat does and how they can get involved. We can’t wait to see you again next year! Volunteer Appreciation As appreciation for all of the hard work our volunteers do, we rented a coach bus and toured down to the Toronto Blue Jays game on Father’s Day at the Rogers centre. With the dome open, and the stadium full of fans, the Blue Jays won! It was nice to have a relaxing day with the volunteers who work so hard to help Habitat Huronia meet its mission. New in August, we also hosted a Thank You BBQ to thank our volunteers, and donors. Judging by some of the smiles, I’d say our volunteers, and their families, had a blast. Thank you for all you give!
