Safe Places Over the last 3 years, Respect Group and Safe Places have a shared commitment to raise awareness of bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination working collaboratively to implement our Safe Places initiative. More recently, we have started working on promoting our initiative across Canada in the hope that Safe Places becomes a trademark that represents a commitment to the quality of service and safety of our youth. In celebration of the work that Respect Group has done to help our community act against abuse, Safe Places decided to run a tournament as part of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canad. Not only are we paying respect to one of our greatest Broncos, but we hope to bring more awareness for Safe Places and build on the legacy Sheldon has created around the rights of youth. We will ensure all of our coaches and volunteers are Safe Places Youth Certified and have decided to offer free training to become Youth Certified to any parents and community members involved in Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada. Sheldon Kennedy Youth Outdoor Classic The Novice division of Swift Current Minor Hockey will be redrafted to form eight teams that will play for the Sheldon Kennedy Youth Outdoor Classic Cup. Sheldon Kennedy will make the official puck drop on Thursday evening and present the winning team with the Cup on Saturday. One player from each team will be eligible to win tickets to the SHDIC Banquet and the chance to walk in with Don and Ron! For more details, please contact Kelly Schafer at k.schafer@swiftcurrent.ca. Aside from bragging rights, this outdoor event is an opportunity to celebrate the game of hockey as part of the bigger Hockey Day in Canada legacy. We are excited to embrace the SHDIC them of Courage as we celebrate Sheldon’s courage to act and be a changemaker! The tournament is a chance for our youth enjoy what sport should be all about! “The game of hockey is so much more than winning or losing. Sport in general offers a place to learn, to escape, an opportunity to grow as a person and develop positive relationships and friendships”. The Sheldon Kennedy Youth Outdoor Classic gives us a specific platform to continue the conversation about making sport safe and enjoyable for young people”. – Sheldon Kennedy, Co-Founder, Respect Group & Former Swift Current Bronco.
