VOLUNTEER & ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES AUGUST-DECEMBER 2021 Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Ignite! Please note that the number of volunteers needed for the activities listed below is approximate; at times we may be able to accommodate groups of more or fewer than listed. All activities are tentative and are contingent upon COVID-19 levels as communicated by the City of Chicago. Volunteer Opportunities AUGUST Ice Cream Social Help us celebrate the “dog days” of summer and close out the month of August with ice cream and outdoor games at our transitional living facility, Belfort House. Ignite staff, youth, and community partners will be there to celebrate! Date: Friday, August 20, 2021,12-4pm Location: Belfort House, 3745 S. Indiana Avenue, Chicago IL 60653 Duration & Volunteers Needed: 2-4 volunteers are needed from 11am until 2pm to help set up, serve ice cream, and facilitate yard games. **** Community Programs Baby Shower Celebration Join us as we celebrate and support our pregnant or parenting clients at our annual Baby Shower Celebration. Date: Friday, August 27, 2021, 12-3pm Location: Ignite Community Access Hub, 56 E. 47th Street, Suite 410C, Chicago, IL 60653.
Baby Shower Volunteer & In-Kind Donation Needs: • Four (4) volunteers are needed to help with decorations (set up the day before on 8/26), 1pm – 3:30pm • Four (4) volunteers are needed to help with clean up after the event, 3pm – 4:30pm • Purchase gifts for our moms from our Baby Shower Amazon Wish List, which can be found here: https://a.co/j4lFvLR. Please forward your Amazon email confirmation/receipt to cprice@ignitepromise.org so we can provide a tax acknowledgement letter for your donation. • Food and decorations for the event are also needed. Please contact cprice@ignitepromise.org if you would like to “sponsor” this event and provide some or all of these items. OCTOBER Halloween Scavenger Hunt & Fright Fest Help Ignite youth and staff celebrate Halloween with a Halloween themed scavenger hunt and “fright fest” celebration! Date: First week of October to decorate with Halloween themed décor (exact date TBD); Saturday, October 29, 4-7pm for scavenger hunt and fright fest Location: Belfort House, 3745 South Indiana, Chicago, IL 60653 Volunteer & In-Kind Donation Needs: • Volunteers are needed the first week of October (exact date TBD) to decorate Belfort House for the Halloween season! • Volunteers are also needed to help us set up and participate in the Halloween themed scavenger hunt and “fright test” on October 29. • In-Kind Donations: We’re seeking Halloween décor and Halloween themed items for scavenger hunt. **** Painting at Belfort House Roll up your sleeves and help us beautify the inside of Belfort House with a fresh coat of paint! Date: Week of October 11 or week of October 18 —exact dates/time TBD Location: Belfort House, 3745 South Indiana, Chicago, IL 60653 Volunteers Needed: 15-20 volunteers to assist with painting a variety of spaces and rooms at Belfort House. Painting supplies provided. NOVEMBER 2
Ignite Thanks for Giving Ignite’s annual Thanks for Giving event brings together current and former Ignite clients, Ignite staff, and our volunteers and donors for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. With the help of volunteers, this event is a “homecoming” for our supporters and young people and gives everyone a chance to celebrate our success together. Tentative Date: Saturday, November 13, 2021, 5-8pm Location: Belfort House, 3745 South Indiana, Chicago, IL 60653 Volunteer & In-Kind Donation Needs • Volunteers are needed to: o Set up for the event (4 volunteers) o Prepare and donate food (20-25 volunteers) o Serve food (6-8 volunteers) o Clean up after the event (5 volunteers) DECEMBER Holiday Gift Drive & Holiday Gift Wrapping Party Join Ignite this holiday season to help create a warm and memorable holiday for the young people at Ignite by participating in our annual holiday gift drive and our holiday gift wrapping party. Each year, Ignite clients complete “wish lists” that contain 4-5 gift items, each valued at $30 or less. Volunteers then shop and donate wish list items. Volunteers also help out at our gift-wrapping party where we wrap gifts for the youth! Gift Drive Date: Early October-late November 2021 Location for Gift Wrapping Party: Ignite Community Hub 56 E. 47th Street, Suite 410C Chicago, IL 60653 Holiday Wrapping Party Dates: • December 8, 2021- 2-hour shifts, exact time TBD • December 9, 2021- 2-hour shifts, exact time TBD Number of Volunteers Needed: • Gift Drive: 50-75 volunteers to fulfill wish lists for clients and to purchase gifts for our Community Programs’ clients and their children. • Gift Wrapping Party: 6-8 volunteers total, each assigned to 2-hour shift 3
ONGOING Belfort House Deep Cleaning Ignite’s transitional living facility, Belfort House, is in need of deep-cleaning on a quarterly basis. Volunteers will focus on cleaning the community area, kitchen, bathrooms, conference room, windows, and blinds throughout the building. Cleaning tasks will include: • Cleaning kitchen, bathroom, and public spaces • Washing windows inside and out • Dusting and cleaning blinds throughout the building • Cleaning doors, light switches, walls, etc. Quarterly Dates: • Friday, September 17, 10am to 4pm • Friday, December 3, 10am to 4pm (this date will also include holiday decorating donated by volunteers) • Friday, March 18, 10am to 4pm • Friday, June 17, 10am to 4pm Location: Belfort House, 3745 South Indiana, Chicago, IL 60653 Volunteers Needed: 10+ volunteers per quarterly date **** Lunch/Dinner Meal Prep & Delivery: Help us feed our teens and young adults! Shop, prepare, and deliver lunch or dinner for the youth at Ignite. Meals are needed for the youth who reside at Belfort House, our transitional living program, as well as the clients involved with our programs at our Community Access Hub. Lunches for a group of 20 are needed for the Hub and lunches and dinner for a group of 35 are needed for Belfort House. Ignite will provide meal suggestions and the dietary needs of our clients. Date(s) & time: Day of the week is flexible. Preferred delivery times are 11:00am for lunch and 4:30pm for dinner. Delivery locations: Belfort House Community Hub 3745 S. Belfort House Gardening Projects The Ignite community garden located on-site at Belfort House provides endless opportunities for volunteers and youth to contribute. Having a garden allows youth to see the benefits of growing food crops and learn how to care for and maintain their outdoor space. With your help, we hope to maintain the garden in 2021-2022! Volunteers will help with: • Clearing out weeds, bushes, and plant beds • Planting vegetables & flowers • Raking and Digging • Cleaning up grounds around the property Date: • September 2021, 9am-12pm; exact date to be determined • October 2021, 9am-12pm; exact date to be determined Location: Belfort House 3745 S Indiana Ave Chicago, IL 60616 Volunteers Needed: 8-16 volunteers **** “Level Up” Virtual Mock Interviews & Resume Review Ignite’s “Level Up” employment program needs volunteers to participate in virtual mock interviews with youth who are preparing to apply for employment. Volunteers are also needed to review resumes and cover letters. A brief orientation about Ignite and our employment and financial empowerment programming will be provided in advance of volunteering. Date: Ongoing on a monthly basis-please contact us to inquire about upcoming sessions and availability. Location: Currently virtual Duration & Volunteers Needed: 3-4 hours; 2-5 volunteers per session **** Girl/Guy Talk “Role Model” Guest Speaker: Once a week, the youth at Belfort House, our transitional living program, meet in small groups to discuss issues relating to girls (Girl Talk) and guys (Guy Talk). We’re seeking volunteer guest speakers to talk with our youth during these discussions and share their personal stories, including how they 5
overcame hardship, decided on and pursued a career, and achieved their personal and professional goals. Date & Time: Tuesdays @ 4-5:00pm or M, W, F @10-11:00am Location: Virtual Volunteers Needed: 1-2 volunteers per month **** Ignite Special Events Committee Member Ignite hosts a wide variety of fundraising events throughout the year! Join our Events Committee & assist with planning, coordinating, and managing Ignite’s special events (both virtual and in-person). Committee members help with engaging individuals to attend the events, plan fun activities for the evening, volunteer at the event and secure donation items and sponsorships. Exact event dates and times TBD. Volunteers Needed: Up to 30 individual volunteers ADDITIONAL IN-KIND DONATION NEEDS Restorative Yoga Supplies: Ignite now offers relaxing and restorative yoga classes for our youth as a healthy way to cope with the stress and pressures of everyday life and the ongoing pandemic. Help support this program by donating yoga mats, stretching ropes, and bolster pillows. We’re also seeking great-smelling candles, sleep masks, and hand/foot cream that can be distributed during Mental Health Awareness Month in May. **** Street Outreach Hygiene Pack Donation Drive: Help youth on the street stay safe by donating hygiene packs, which will be passed out by our Street Outreach Team. Needed items: small tubes of toothpaste and small bars of soap, toothbrushes, washcloths, mouthwash, condoms, hand sanitizer, masks, and personal hygiene items for women. **** Fall/Winter Clothing and Coats As the summer ends, we are seeking *new* cold weather clothing and coats for our clients. Please contact us for a list of the items and sizes that we’re seeking. 6
