Dear Friend of the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, The fabric of our town is woven from strong and resilient individuals looking for a better life. Women’s History Month in March seemed like a perfect opportunity to gain insight and perspective on some of the impactful and strong women who have left their mark on Provincetown. Who better to sit down with than my mother and Aunt Kath to gather their stories and memories on women leaders. While the stories they shared could have filled the pages of many volumes, I did my best to capture their memories in the latest blog post in my series on PMPM’s website, “Stories I’ve heard.” In this informal retelling of history, Mom and Aunt Kath told me about Provincetown legends -- including Alice O’Grady Joseph, Molly Benjamin, Josephine Del Deo, Cecelia Francis, Joy McNulty and Susan Glaspell -- who’ve all left lasting legacies that bettered the Provincetown community. These are just some of the incredible women who have shaped Provincetown. Know other Provincetown women in history or now that we forgot? Add them to the comments section and keep their story alive. Thank you for being a friend of the museum. We look forward to seeing you at PMPM this spring! Their mission is to lend a helping hand to transgender and gender non-conforming indiviDuals living on Cape Cod and the Islands and are in NEED of assistance in meeWng the challenge of their life journey. Some have the support of their families and friends -- BUT many are not as fortunate. "O?enWmes, young people become homeless a?er being kicked out of their parents' home simply for Coming Out." In this world we have so much diversity YET there so much division .. Your help is needed. This event has lots of entertainment, professionals and so much more. 11 LIGHTHOUSES IN NEW ENGLAND YOU CAN ACTUALLY SPEND THE NIGHT IN ArWcle by Matador Network Where to Stay Beaches + Islands Massachusetts, United States Maine, United States Rhode Island, United States We hope you love the spaces and stays we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from some of the links on this page if you decide to book a stay, and listed prices are accurate as of the time of publication. There are many must-dos when traveling through New England. If you’re exploring the region during the fall, you must take a road trip to admire the world-famous foliage; if you’re traveling during the holidays, you can’t leave before checking out the Hallmark-movie-like towns that dot the area; and if you’re wanting to spend time in nature, you can’t miss the stunning and unbelievably underrated state parks. But before anything else, there is one activity that would be sacrilegious to forego: touring the lighthouses. You can plan an entire road trip around the beacons or see them from a boat on one of the many lighthouse tours available, but the best way to really appreciate New England’s lighthouses is to stay in one. There are only a few lighthouses in New England that are equipped and allow for overnight stays, and we’ve selected the best of them in Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Here are 11 New England lighthouses where you can spend the night. Located on the northern tip of Cape Cod in the Cape Cod National Seashore, the keeper’s house and the whistle house of Race Point Light Station have both been fully renovated and welcome guests from spring through fall. The keeper’s house, built in 1876, can accommodate up to 10 guests and can be entirely rented by one party. The Whistle House can welcome up to eight guests. The Race Point Light Station is in a secluded location, and guests need to use their own four-wheel-drive vehicle and obtain an oversand permit from the National Park Service to access it. Alternatively, they can contact a dune tour operator for transportation. Fit travelers can make their way on foot. The lighthouse, rebuilt in 1876, is open for tours twice a month from June to October. More ...
Live on GO Magazine A Year Of Covid Has Taken Its Toll On Provincetown, But The Beloved Gay Mecca Carries On GO MAGAZINE MSN NAMES PROVINCETOWN ONE OF AMERICA'S 25 BEST BEACH TOWNS The 25 Best Beach Towns in America (msn.com) 23. PROVINCETOWN, MA Those in the know affectionately call this place P-Town, and a mention of the town by any name instantly conjures images of Cape Cod charm—but it wasn’t always that way. Nicknamed “Helltown'' in Puritan times, it was a favored port of call for seafarers and fishermen during the 1600s, who gambled, drank and partied in this tiny town. Today, the town still throws popular parties, many for the LGBTQIA+ scene that dominates here, especially on popular themed weekends. Dune tours, whale watching tours, and seeing a show at one of the welcoming restaurants or entertainment venues in town is a good place to start. Reopening in spring of 2021, a meal at the Lobster Pot is ritualized for return visitors, and there’s plenty of restaurants (Helltown Kitchen, The Canteen and Mac’s Fish House) that fit every budget and palette. A stay at the dreamy Stowaway, an intimate guesthouse with a storybook-like garden, is just one option in town that turns on the charm. The property boasts a hot tub, sauna, and patio area ideal for congregating in an outdoor, socially distanced way. Thank you William P. BUY A PASS - EARLY BIRD DISCOUNTS We are thrilled to be announcing this season’s Hawthorne Barn Residents. This is our most ambitious class to date—and while we can’t (yet) welcome all of you back into the Barn in person, this May and June we’ll be able to share a series of virtual events, as well as a number of "pop-ups" throughout the region. Meanwhile, please join me in welcoming our Season 8 residents! We are excited to host eight residencies that celebrate the intersection of social justice and the arts: Elizabeth James Perry and Patricia James Perry employ traditional and contemporary indigenous techniques from the Aquinnah Wampanoag; Jeffrey Yasuo Mansfield is an architect who explores the commonalities among deaf spaces, internment, and the pandemic; Raymond Antrobus is an award-winning English-Jamaican poet; Chanel Thervil is an arts educator whose work celebrates Black joy; Maynard Monroe uses text- based artworks to challenge assumptions and ignite conversation; Brian Vines shows us the power of community journalism; and Shaina Feinberg is a multitalented writer, director, and performer. You can read more about this season’s residencies in this week’s Provincetown Banner and on our website you can preregister for the free classes and lectures we’ll be offering beginning mid-May. Meanwhile, please do take this opportunity to remember what makes Twenty Summers such an important institution in Provincetown and beyond. This year has been hard for us all—and especially for those of us who rely on arts funding to stay afloat. Twenty Summers has therefore made a commitment to more than double our artist honoraria in support of our creative colleagues. To do so, we’ve launched a fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $100,000 by the end of the season. If you have been a member in the past, if you’ve ever experienced the light of the Barn, please consider contributing today. Thank you for your support, Aziz Isham Executive Director, Twenty Summers
Erna Partoll has exhibited with Berta Walker Gallery for almost 30 years. Her abstract paintings focus on color and composition with archetypal shapes of circle, square, wave, and arc.The art speaks to the viewer with exuberant colors and a deeply resonating geometric vocabulary, including spheres within spheres, undulations that are like the roll of a hill or the timeless movement of water, and angles that rise up like mountains. “I grew up in Switzerland, in the mountains,” she explains. “The mountains are very powerful, just like the ocean. These environments put you in perspective as a human being, in relation to being or not being, which triggers a whole range of responses.” Partoll’s intuited visions are not simple landscapes, they are symphonies of shape and color. They are elemental. They are portals, offering access to a more instinctive relationship with the universe around us. Visit the exhibition here!
