Dear Friend of the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum,

The fabric of our town is woven from strong and resilient individuals looking for a better life. Women’s
History Month in March seemed like a perfect opportunity to gain insight and perspective on some of the
impactful and strong women who have left their mark on Provincetown. Who better to sit down with than
my mother and Aunt Kath to gather their stories and memories on women leaders.

While the stories they shared could have filled the pages of many volumes, I did my best to capture their
memories in the latest blog post in my series on PMPM’s website, “Stories I’ve heard.”

In this informal retelling of history, Mom and Aunt Kath told me about Provincetown legends -- including
Alice O’Grady Joseph, Molly Benjamin, Josephine Del Deo, Cecelia Francis, Joy McNulty and Susan
Glaspell -- who’ve all left lasting legacies that bettered the Provincetown community.

These are just some of the incredible women who have shaped Provincetown. Know other Provincetown
women in history or now that we forgot? Add them to the comments section and keep their story alive.

Thank you for being a friend of the museum. We look forward to seeing you at PMPM
this spring!

Stay safe and be well,
Courtney Hurst

There are many must-dos when traveling through New England. If you’re exploring the region during the
fall, you must take a road trip to admire the world-famous foliage;
if you’re traveling during the holidays, you can’t leave before checking out the
Hallmark-movie-like towns that dot the area; and if you’re wanting to spend time in nature, you can’t miss
the stunning and unbelievably underrated state parks. But before anything else, there is one activity that
would be sacrilegious to forego: touring the lighthouses.
You can plan an entire road trip around the beacons or see them from a boat on one of the many
lighthouse tours available, but the best way to really appreciate New England’s lighthouses is to stay in
one. There are only a few lighthouses in New England that are equipped and allow for overnight stays,
and we’ve selected the best of them in Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Here are 11 New
England lighthouses where you can spend the night.

Located on the northern tip of Cape Cod in the Cape Cod
National Seashore, the keeper’s house and the whistle
house of Race Point Light Station have both been fully
renovated and welcome guests from spring through fall.
The keeper’s house, built in 1876, can accommodate up to
10 guests and can be entirely rented by one party. The
Whistle House can welcome up to eight guests. The Race
Point Light Station is in a secluded location, and guests
need to use their own four-wheel-drive vehicle and obtain an oversand permit from the
National Park Service to access it. Alternatively, they can contact a dune tour operator for
transportation. Fit travelers can make their way on foot. The lighthouse, rebuilt in 1876, is
open for tours twice a month from June to October.

Those in the know affectionately call this place P-Town, and a mention of the town by any name instantly
conjures images of Cape Cod charm—but it wasn’t always that way. Nicknamed “Helltown'' in Puritan
times, it was a favored port of call for seafarers and fishermen during the 1600s, who gambled, drank and
partied in this tiny town. Today, the town still throws popular parties, many for the LGBTQIA+ scene that
dominates here, especially on popular themed weekends.
Dune tours, whale watching tours, and seeing a show at one of the welcoming restaurants or
entertainment venues in town is a good place to start. Reopening in spring of 2021, a meal at the Lobster
Pot is ritualized for return visitors, and there’s plenty of restaurants (Helltown Kitchen, The Canteen and
Mac’s Fish House) that fit every budget and palette.
A stay at the dreamy Stowaway, an intimate guesthouse with a storybook-like garden, is just one option
in town that turns on the charm. The property boasts a hot tub, sauna, and patio area ideal for
congregating in an outdoor, socially distanced way.

                                              Thank you

Join Castle Hill for a free spring series
of 60+ Printmaking and Cooking Classes!

In an effort to meet the high demand for our free, 60+ program, Castle Hill has launched spring sessions
of both printmaking and cooking workshops! Classes will be held over Zoom and are open to full-time
residents of the Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans, Chatham, Harwich and Brewster, who
are over 60 years of age. Both classes are open to students of all levels who want to grow their skills with
techniques and materials easy to use at home. Participants are chosen through a lottery system, and will
be notified of admittance on Friday, April 9. To enter the lottery, please visit castlehill.org/2021-60-
programming or call our office at (508) 349-7511.

Relief Printmaking in the Home Studio will be taught by Vicky Tomayko and held on Tuesdays and
Thursdays, 10am – 12pm. It will run from April 13 – 29. In this class, students will explore ways to make
relief prints, including woodcut, linocut, and collagraphs. These 6 classes meet via Zoom for
demonstrations that include techniques for carving, keeping your tools sharp, creating blocks with
cardboard and paper, and printing by hand. Look at wood and linoleum cuts throughout history, and share
your work. Print reliefs without a press and learn how to use stencils and pochoir in combination with
block printing. You will need to gather your own supplies and join in from your home. A suggested list of
materials will be provided.

Vicky Tomayko is an artist and printmaker who lives and works in Truro. Tomayko teaches at Cape Cod
Community College and at arts organizations including Castle Hill Center for the Arts, Provincetown Art
Association and Museum, and the Fine Arts Work Center where she was a fellow. She received an MFA
in printmaking from Western Michigan University and is the recipient of two Ford Foundation Grants.
Tomayko has work in the collection of Provincetown Art Association and Museum. She is represented by
the Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown and the A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn NY.

The spring cooking workshop will be taught by Katherine Alford and will take place on Thursdays, from 3
– 5pm. It will run from April 22 – May 20, skipping May 6, for a total of 4 sessions. Cook along or sit back
and watch as Katherine, former Head of the Food Network Kitchen, teaches you tips to elevate your
culinary game. This class is designed to be fun and engaging for everyone from beginner to experienced
home cooks. Shopping lists will be provided and the final menu will be designed with student input in
mind.

Katherine Alford ran a New York Times’s 4-star kitchen, was a Greenmarket manager, and was the
director of Peter Kump’s New York Cooking School (now the Institute of Culinary Education). She spent
the twenty years at Food Network, most recently as the senior vice president of culinary, where she led
the culinary team for TV, digital, and print. She was instrumental in the creation of multiple cookbooks that
were IACP award finalists, Food & Wine’s Best of the Best, and New York Times bestsellers. She
oversaw the test kitchen and had a column in Food Network Magazine, with a monthly reach of over 1.3
million readers. She is the co-author with Kathy Gunst of Rage Baking—The Transformative Power of
Flour, Fury and Women’s Voices.

We are thrilled to be announcing this season’s Hawthorne Barn Residents. This is our most ambitious
class to date—and while we can’t (yet) welcome all of you back into the Barn in person, this May and
June we’ll be able to share a series of virtual events, as well as a number of "pop-ups" throughout the
region.

Meanwhile, please join me in welcoming our Season 8 residents! We are excited to host eight
residencies that celebrate the intersection of social justice and the arts: Elizabeth James
Perry and Patricia James Perry employ traditional and contemporary indigenous techniques from the
Aquinnah Wampanoag; Jeffrey Yasuo Mansfield is an architect who explores the commonalities among
deaf spaces, internment, and the pandemic; Raymond Antrobus is an award-winning English-Jamaican
poet; Chanel Thervil is an arts educator whose work celebrates Black joy; Maynard Monroe uses text-
based artworks to challenge assumptions and ignite conversation; Brian Vines shows us the power of
community journalism; and Shaina Feinberg is a multitalented writer, director, and performer.

You can read more about this season’s residencies in this week’s Provincetown Banner and on our
website you can preregister for the free classes and lectures we’ll be offering beginning mid-May.

Meanwhile, please do take this opportunity to remember what makes Twenty Summers such an
important institution in Provincetown and beyond. This year has been hard for us all—and especially for
those of us who rely on arts funding to stay afloat. Twenty Summers has therefore made a commitment to
more than double our artist honoraria in support of our creative colleagues. To do so, we’ve launched a
fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $100,000 by the end of the season.

If you have been a member in the past, if you’ve ever experienced the light of the Barn, please consider
contributing today.

Thank you for your support,

Aziz Isham

Erna Partoll has exhibited with Berta Walker Gallery
for almost 30 years. Her abstract paintings focus on color and
composition with archetypal shapes of circle, square, wave,
and arc.The art speaks to the viewer with exuberant colors
and a deeply resonating geometric vocabulary, including
spheres within spheres, undulations that are like the roll of a
hill or the timeless movement of water, and angles that rise
up like mountains. “I grew up in Switzerland, in the
mountains,” she explains. “The mountains are very powerful,
just like the ocean. These environments put you in
perspective as a human being, in relation to being or not
being, which triggers a whole range of responses.”
Partoll’s intuited visions are not simple landscapes,
they are symphonies of shape and color. They are elemental.
They are portals, offering access to a more instinctive
relationship with the universe around us.
