PROVIDENCIA PRESS Jennifer Culbertson, Principal FEBRUARY 2021 Dear Parents and Guardians, Have you ever experienced or provided “random acts of kindness”? How did it make you feel? Experts have determined that showing kindness changes the brain, and that selfless acts of giving provide physical and emotional benefits needed for a well-rounded individual. This is why it is essential for children to learn kindness early on. Here are just a few of the many benefits your children will experience from learning the values such as kindness: 1. Happy Children – Study shows that kindness activates the joyful area of the brain. Pleasure resulting in kindness activates the need to replicate those feelings either as a receiver or a giver. 2. Improved Health and Less Stress – Being kind increases happiness and decreases stress. 3. Greater Sense of Belonging and Improved Self Esteem – Even small acts of kindness create feelings of self-worth and belonging. Acts of kindness increase energy and give a wonderful feeling of optimism. 4. Increased Feelings of Gratitude – Children learn to appreciate what they have when helping those less fortunate. 5. Better Concentration and Improved Results - Kindness is a key ingredient that helps children feel good. Having a positive outlook increases attentions spans and enables more creative thinking which can produce better results at school. 6. Less Bullying – Research has documented that the effects of bullying can be significantly reduced by integrating kindness based programs. 7. Reduced Depression - Research has discovered that an act of kindness increases levels of serotonin (a natural chemical responsible for improving mood) in the brain. Serotonin levels are increased in both the giver and receiver of an act of kindness, as well as anyone who witnesses that kindness, making it a wonderful natural antidepressant. If the past year has taught us anything, it is the power of kindness. It prevails in challenging times. As we have navigated this difficult pandemic, empathy has allowed us to stay connected through social distancing. Generosity and giving have supported those in need. And acts of kindness have given our mental health and emotional well-being a much-needed boost. The best thing about kindness is that it can be done anywhere, at any time. It can be done at school, or on Zoom, in our community, or simply in your backyard. Anyone can be kind, especially young learners. In honor of the month of love and friendship AND National Random Act of Kindness Day (February 17th), our February character trait is KINDNESS. Throughout the month of February, we hope our students will show kindness in a variety of ways. Keep your eyes out for an email that contains a February Kindness Calendar that includes a daily suggestion of how your child can show kindness. I ask that you encourage your child to partake in these acts and maybe join in on the fun as well. Acts of kindness are not only special for the receiver but also feel good as the doer. Thank you again for helping make February a month full of fun, love, friendship, and kindness! Be well, Jen Culbertson

MESSAGES FROM OUR PTA PRESIDENT February starts a busy season for PTA! This is an exciting time for PTA! If you've ever wondered what PTA does, or want to find ways to become more involved in the programs at school, please come check out one of our meetings. Our next meeting will be on February 16th at 7:00pm via Zoom. A link will be sent out closer to the meeting. Please come to find out more about the amazing plans PTA is working on and how you can get involved! Remember in order to have at vote at our meetings, you must be a member. Becoming a member is all online, and super easy! https://jointotem.com/ca/burbank/providencia-elementary-pta In February the PTA Association will nominate the board for the 2021-2022 school year. Any current PTA member can join the board and help create the future for your child's school. If you are interested in joining the executive board, please let us know. Honorary Service Awards are happening this month. This is a special award given out by the PTA Association for volunteers who have gone above and beyond each year for Providencia. Take a look around the school or community. Is there someone who has volunteered outstanding service to children? If the answer is yes, nominate them for PTA's Honorary Service Award Program. The purpose of the HSA is to give special recognition to selected individuals, parents, teachers, or school employees who have volunteered outstanding service to children and youth in our schools and our community. Nominations must be turned in to Michelle Stamp, HSA Chairperson by February 5, 2021 at mcb0214@hotmail.com We are in the process of planning a few more Family Dine Out nights in the future, so please be on the lookout. We are currently looking for a chairperson for this event. If you are interested in finding out more information, please reach out to me. My email address is mullinsmom3@yahoo.com. Also, if you have any suggestions for restaurants, please let us know. We are always looking for new places to try!! Lastly, please don’t forget there are a couple ways you can support PTA without even trying. 1. Register your Ralphs Rewards card at www.Ralphs.com. Just create an account, login, and click Community Rewards to search for Providencia and link to your card. PTA gets a few thousand dollars a year from just a small percentage of families with linked cards. It really is the easiest way to earn money for our PTA. 2. Link Providencia to your Amazon Smile account. It’s another way for PTA to earn money, and who doesn’t love shopping on Amazon shopping! Thank you for your support! Becky Mullins PTA President
