PRINCIPAL’S REPORT It is hard to believe that we are at the end of yet another year in St. Aidan’s. The year has been both busy and challenging! Our students and you have had to embrace the new procedures and protocols like mask wearing, social distancing and sanitizing as schools reopened. Thanks to the efforts of everyone in our school community, staff, students and you their parents/guardians, we have managed to stay open for all except for the period of national lockdown. Most students were able to find new ways of adapting to the many changes but for some Covid 19 has posed chal- lenges. I hope that now as we move out of the restrictions of Covid 19 they will find the light again and live life to the full. Our staff and student support team have been working with students to help them to talk through any concerns and to find new positive ways to move on with their lives. Our Year Heads and Tutors have been a wonderful support to their year group. Despite the restrictions, students and staff found new ways to engage in activities whilst adhering to Covid 19 re- strictions! A great deal of fundraising took place, for St Vincent de Paul, Crumlin Hospital, Down Syndrome Associa- tion, Shoe Box Appeal and many others. Students care and concern for others is commendable. Our students found ways to celebrate, have fun and laugh in a variety of activities including the Halloween fancy dress, the Christmas door decorations, adopting an animal in the zoo, visit to Tanagh, the Lego Workshop, well-being walks and hot chocolate breaks and many other activities and workshops. Our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and T.Y students will all have their in-house summer examinations over the next few weeks. We would ask that they focus on revision and doing their very best in each and every exam. The results of their assess- ments will be used to allocate students to classes and levels in subjects Our sixth year students who are taking the Accredited Grades option only will finish on Friday 14 th May. Students tak- ing the written Leaving Certificate exams will be in school until the 28th May. The Leaving Certificate exams will begin on Wednesday June 9th. On behalf of all the staff, I want to take this opportunity to wish all of our 6 th years the very best of luck in the exami- nation process and in the future. Thank you our parents/guardians for your on-going support, it is very much appreciated. We are looking forward with hope and optimism for our next school year. For all of you and your families who have been affected by the Covid 19 pandemic we will remember you in our thoughts and prayers. We hope you and your families stay healthy safe and enjoy the summer. With every good wish M. Smith 2
6TH YEAR 6TH YEAR As your journey at St. Aidan’s comes to a close, I would like to thank you all for your enthusiasm and kind spiritedness over the last two years. Class of 2021, what a rollercoaster ride you have been on during your senior cycle!!! Covid 19 has certainly thrown us all a curveball (with lots of spin). From mask wearing, to social distancing; to lockdowns and then to online teaching and learning. However, through it all, your commitment and dedication to each other and to your studies never faltered. With all these life experiences, your adaptability, resilience, and sense of solidarity shone through. I take this opportunity on behalf of your tutors to wish you all every success as you prepare for your Leaving Certificate examinations. We encourage each one of you to engage positively in study and revision over the next few weeks in preparation for your examinations. On your behalf, I would like to thank all the staff and especially your tutors Ms. Derrick, Mr. Ross, Ms. Sherry and Ms. Vogan for all their work and commitment over the last two years. Also, a special word of thanks must go to Ms. Drury and Mr. McQuillan for all their help and advice throughout the years. In conclusion, I would like to thank the class of 2021 for their cooperation, kindness and good humour!!!! I wish you the very best with this next exciting chapter of your life. I wish each and every one of you success in your Leaving Cert Exams, but most of all, I wish you a future filled with health and happiness. TRANSITION YEAR Transition Year Class 2021, As this very unusual year comes to an end, I want to say well done to you all on a fantas- tic TY. Although the year didn’t turn out as planned for any year group, you have been fortunate that quite a few of your TY experiences were unaffected by the school clo- sures, and while some of the major high points of the year were not possible due to government restrictions, you have actually embraced brand new TY experiences that we have not yet had in St. Aidan’s. Right from the beginning you have been very busy…. with Thai Chi and Qui Gong work- shops, Halloween pumpkins and Christmas logs, Clayotic and Lego days, Life Skills Work- shop, IBEC international training day, our determination to get away for a day led us to Tanagh, our TY sports day fun, subject sampling, enterprise endeavours, future leaders, mock interview preparation and zoom interviews….all to name but a few! I would like to thank and acknowledge the contribution made by you all, however big or small. To those of you who were prefects, deputy prefects, bus prefects, librarians etc well done on carrying out your role on a daily basis. A huge thank you to your 3 tutors Ms. Brady, Ms. English and Mr. McKenna, who have worked so hard and so encouraging- ly with you all throughout the year. On your behalf I wish to thank them. Thank you also to Ms. Smith, Mr. Magee, all your subject teachers, the ancillary staff, your parents and the wider community for supporting the TY programme at all times. Well done to you all, have a safe, healthy and enjoyable summer with your families. We are all very hopeful that September brings some form of normality to our lives both in- side and outside of school, and just remember to get stuck into 5th year work right from the beginning and give it your very best shot. Take care and stay safe. Jackie Sweeney. 12

FIRST YEAR First Years Congratulations to you all on completing your first year in St Aidan’s. I would like to acknowledge the very challenging transition you experienced back in August 2020. Many of the things you were looking forward to in sec- ondary school were not available to you due to Covid restrictions. You ac- cepted the wearing of masks and limited movement around your new school in a very mature and good humoured manner, your positivity and co- operation was appreciated. Rang Muireann ,Manus, Maitiu and Meabh you wowed us with your Christ- mas door designs, your talent and cheerful spirit was evident to the entire school community. You showed your compassion and giving nature as you supported many of the school charity fund raising events. The adoption of your animals from Dublin Zoo was one of the highlights of the year for us all. Moving to remote online learning in January was a challenge for all of us and once again you showed your ability to adapt and learn in a new way. Throughout this period of logging on, uploading and downloading your good humour, courtesy and excellent work ethic was always evident. Your engagement with the weekly virtual quizzes and fun competitions run by your tutors allowed you to take a little break and have some fun We were delighted to see you return to the classrooms on April 12t,h . We are very proud of you and we hope that you will get to experience a more “normal” second year. Finally, I wish you a lovely summer break and I hope that you and your families stay healthy and safe. Breege Doherty Year Head 21

Biodiversity at St Aidan’s In celebration of Earth Day (April 22), volunteer students from TY2 planted 23 new sapling trees on the grounds of St Aidan’s during the last two weeks of April. “Plant, plant, plant, as if your life depends on it, because it does,” says Brian Mac Domhnaill of the National Federation of Group Water Schemes, who kindly donated the trees to St Aidan’s. He is keen for students, teachers and parents to appreciate the relationship between planting trees and the protection of water health. “This is literally the best thing anyone can do for biodiversity,” says Mr Mac Domhnaill. “There is a direct relationship between planting trees and protecting the health of the water we drink. Environmental health and water health go hand in hand.” Seven students from Ms Corbett’s TY 2 Agricultural Science class volunteered to be part of the project; Senan Mullen, Dearbhla Mc Cormick, Sophie Murphy, Ryan Curran, Saoirse Mc Glynn, Emma McMullan Maguire, Oisin Pepper and Ciara Clerkin. Digging the often stony soil was, at times, tortuous work, but every sapling was safely in the ground, staked and watered within the time allotted. The trees planted were all native to Ireland: mostly Rowan (mountain ash) and hawthorn. For more information about water heath and biodiversity, please visit the National Federation of Group Water Schemes at www.nfgws.ie. Ciara Clerkin and Emma Maguire hard at work on topsoil duty. ~savedublinzoo In November 2020, Dublin Zoo posted a tweet stating their financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic, #savedublinzoo. The zoo was closed to the public due to coronavirus restrictions and desperately needed funds to feed and look after the ani- mals. The cost for caring for the animals can be around half a million euros a month. The first year students decided to help raise funds for Dublin Zoo by taking part in “Adopt an Animal” campaign. The four tutor groups(Rang Méabh, Muireann, Manus & Maitiú) adopted a snow leopard, orangutan and two penguins and donated €200.00 to Dublin Zoo. The School of Life St. Aidan’s TY students got the opportunity to take part in the ‘School of Life’ workshop run by Michelle Harding. In this workshop, we learned basic etiquette and the social and life skills that play an important role in their development. This course prepares young people for work experience and part-time employment. We were prepared for future job interviews and how to present ourselves. We know the importance of correct dress such as wearing a suit and how to meet the interviewer's ex- pectations. This helped us gain better communication skills and it gave us the skills to make a good first impression. It had a focus on personal hygiene, it increased our self-confidence and aware- ness, and we learned basic tasks in the home, such as ironing and washing clothes. We got to partake in activities such as tying a tie, practicing for interviews and ironing. This workshop will really help us going forward in our development. 25

Transition Year Peer Mentoring & Provoking Thought Programmes All Transition Years are involved in a peer mentor programme through the Our Generation Peace IV Project. The training is provided by Joanne McCauley from Donegal Youth Services. All students who completed the programme will receive a certificate in mentoring. The aim of the programme is to give students another place they can go to if they have a problem so that each student can achieve their maximum potential. These TYs who are trained will work on the Cairde Programme with next years first year students. It will ease the transition from primary school to sec- ondary school for these students and is a fantastic learning experience for all. Transition Year IBEC TY Talks 21 TYTalks21 is an exciting new virtual event that was created for all Transition Year students in Ireland. The event took place virtually on Wed 5th May and was designed to inspire and motivate students for the future of work. Post-Covid, TY students will need to move forward with their education and career choices. The team at Ibec partnered with the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principles (NAPD) to create this event for all of Ireland’s 45,000 TY students. The event gave insight into the world of work, the skills of the future, different career pathways and so much more. The TY’s listened to futurists, business minds, educators, young leaders, and entrepreneurs. There was a virtual Expo area showcasing learning and skills partners, an industries discovery zone and a fun scavenger hunt for great prizes. 40
