11 August 2020 # 14 PRINCIPAL’S PEN As we approach the midpoint of the term it is an opportunity to take stock of where we are at the moment. In a year that by anyone’s standards has been unusual, in Far North Queensland we are fortunate to be currently experiencing a greater sense of normality. Here at school our staff and students are well and truly settled back into the routines of learning. We remain vigilant in the space of keeping our community safe and continue to follow the Queensland Department of Education’s operating guidelines to determine the actions we have in place. In answer to the question asked by many parents - as these operating guidelines are updated in days and weeks to come, we will adjust the way things are done here in response. We have extensive forward planning in place to see us through a number of possible scenarios as we, like the rest of the state and country, watch and wait to see what happens next. Wellbeing remains a central focus for our daily work. We know that many families are experiencing a range of challenges related to the events and circumstances of the global pandemic. We are working in various ways across the school to focus on supporting students and enhancing their resilience. Please let us know if there are circumstances for your family that might affect your child’s wellbeing so we can monitor and support them. With the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples observed over the last weekend (9 August) it is pleasing to be able to advise you that a number of our students will be representing us at the Junior Indigenous Youth Parliament in Cairns on the Thursday 3 September. The Youth Parliament will be chaired by the Speaker of the Queensland Parliament along with local Members of Parliament. Students will debate a motion on a youth issue, speak about an inspirational Indigenous person or speak in an Adjournment Debate about any issue falling within the jurisdiction of the Queensland Parliament. We will publish a story and photos when the event happens. Last but by no means least – we were very excited to welcome an amazing group of young tennis players to our school on Friday 31 July. They came along to present a free tennis racquet to each of our Prep students as part of Tennis Australia’s HotShots program. Along with Ash Barty, we were joined by John Milman, JP Smith and Lizette Cabrera. They spent time chatting with our Preps and answering questions before heading off on their whirlwind tour of the Far North. Don’t forget to order your Krispy Kreme donuts online at Flexischools to support the P & C’s fundraising for our school and get a little fix of fete time excitement. Kirsty EDWARDS Acting Principal
LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWS PREP - YEAR 2 NEWS Thank you to everyone who has responded and is engaged in parent/teacher interviews. I know all teachers are thinking of ways to engage families so they can share their students’ learning and growth during this time. Prep Last week, Prep A finished their Science unit on ‘What are things made of?’. The students’ task was to design, make and appraise an object. They completed their wind chimes and the students were able to talk about what materials they used. Everyone was excited to meet some tennis greats (especially Mr Ashton) and receive their very own tennis racquet. Thanks to Tennis Australia’s HotShots Program. In Maths, Preps are learning to write yes/no questions and then gather data from their answers. They are also starting to sequence events and to measure the duration of an event, eg how long does it take to have a bath, clean my teeth, walk the dog, drive to the shop or what events take minutes, hours, days or weeks? All Preps are busy creating a simple rhyme to recite to an audience and communicate their opinion about a rhyming story, identifying the rhyme within it. Here Prep D are making letter houses during rotation and working on their rhyming sentences.
LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWS PREP - YEAR 2 NEWS Year 1 Year 1 students are busy practising their poems for their English unit ‘Engaging With Poetry’. Students recite a poem to the class, being aware of their pace, volume, facial expressions and gestures. Students in 1E wrote poems about themselves titled, I’m special, I’m me! In Maths the year level is learning about time and money and in Science they have been investigating changes in properties. What happens when chocolate melts, spaghetti is cooked, bread toasted or corn popped and can it return to its original form?
LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWS PREP - YEAR 2 NEWS Year 2 Year 2 students have had a block of technology lessons with Mr Harris to work through their Digital Technologies unit. They have been exploring coding, robotics, computing skills and more. Students are thoroughly engaged and enjoy working in the Innovation Centre In Science the students have been exploring mixtures and discussing what homogeneous and heterogeneous means, and how mixtures work - what substances can they mix? They have also been looking at solids and liquids, recording findings and discussing with friends what they think and see. The Cairns Historical Society will be visiting this Thursday and again next Thursday to show students many inventions from the past. Students have been learning in HASS how things have changed over time. You will receive an invoice via email, for $2.50 for this event. Finally, class 1-2F have been learning about the Earth, day and night, and natural, managed and constructed features of our environment. They designed and created these diorama to show what they have learned. Kathy STREET Deputy Principal Years Prep 1 & 2
LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWS YEAR 3 & YEAR 4 NEWS Congratulations to our Students of the Week. These learners have really applied themselves and followed the school expectations; Be Safe Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Learning Ms Way sent home some fun ways to learn timetables. One activity was a timetable wheel. Quin had a little help from her mum to make a flower timetable wheel to help her learn some tricky times tables. Year 3 Students of the Week Teachers are noticing that as the temperature has dropped over the past few weeks, the students’ appetites have increased. Some students are eating part of their lunch before school, meaning they don’t have as much to eat for the rest of the day. Starting the day with a hearty, nutritious breakfast is a great way to fuel brains and bodies and get them working through to the lunch break. A healthy lunch and snacks, either from home or the tuckshop, ensures they can sustain their energy for learning and play for the rest of the day. Please check with your child if they have enough to eat for the duration of the school day. Teachers will be conducting parent/teacher interviews via phone over the next few weeks. This is a great opportunity to stay connected with the class teacher and discuss your child’s progress and set future goals. You can book an interview time online via the link that was emailed last week, or contact the school office. I hope you are enjoying the class newsletter teachers are emailing to parents each fortnight. It’s another way to stay connected and informed about the learning happening in your child’s classroom. Our focus of the week during virtual parades is once again about kindness and some simple acts that make others and yourself feel good. These include: smiling, saying hello and asking how someone is, giving words of encouragement, giving a compliment, lending a helping hand, including others, showing patience. Mrs Dumbleton’s 4G class have been experimenting recently with watercolours in Art, using flowers from our school garden as inspiration.
LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWS YEAR 3 & YEAR 4 NEWS 3H students have been learning about counting money and working out change in Maths. 4D are learning how to estimate, measure and then order the capacity of different objects. Here students estimate the capacity of different objects in millilitres. Once we completed our estimations we then got the different objects, filled them with water, poured the water into a measuring jug, recorded the actual capacities of each object and then ordered the capacities from smallest to largest . We learnt that there is 1000mL in 1L and that the same type of object can have different capacities. We really enjoyed the activity because we were learning while having fun! In more Maths news, Year 3 Students investigated 1kg last week. They looked at things that were heavier than, lighter than or equal to 1kg. After reading Who Sank the Boat by Pamela Allen, students were challenged to build an alfoil boat that could hold the weight. From the boys group, Rohan’s boat managed to hold a whopping 1.4kg. The winner of the girl's group was Destiny whose boat held 1.1kg. An awesome effort and tenacity was shown by all!
LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWS YEAR 4 RECIPE OF THE WEEK Another yummy and healthy winter warmer! Angela BRENNAN Deputy Principal Years 3 & 4

LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWS YEAR 5 & YEAR 6 NEWS Bike Education Goes Outside Cycling and walking are simple ways for children to incorporate physical activity into their everyday lives. Walking or riding is a great way to start the day particularly if you live within a reasonable distance from school. We are very excited that we can implement a Bike Education program into our curriculum that will engage students in physical activity and assist them to learn all the necessary rules that will keep them safe when they ride. Perhaps even more students will choose to ride to school as a result. Bike Education has moved from classroom theory lessons to practical lessons. Putting into practise all they have learned in the classroom. Before going out to ride: checking brakes, seat heights, tyres and fitting helmets correctly is just the start. It’s great to see the classes out on the oval practicing what they have learned.
LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWS YEAR 5 & YEAR 6 NEWS Here are some recent images from the Year 6 Bridge Design Challenge. The challenge should they choose to accept it (and they did!) was to use their knowledge of different types of bridges: suspension, truss and arch, then create a bridge that was, to be at least two matchbox cars in width, span 50cm in length and hold 1kg in weight. Engineers in the making! Below are some action shots of terrific teamwork in Year 6 Science – “Popping Tops” Investigation. The goal was to place a fizzy tablet into a canister filled with a solution while one student is ready with the cap. Once the lid is securely on, learners watched and waited (while timing) until the reaction forced the top to POP! The reactions of students were priceless as the canister exploded and the orange liquid spilt out! Ngari ABBOTT Deputy Principal Years 5 & 6
SCHOOL SHOP NEWS LOST PROPERTY… is exploding again! Are you missing a jumper? Can’t find your drink bottle? Wonder what happened to that container? Good chance your missing items are being held in the Lost Property cubbies just waiting to come home. TUCK SHOP NEWS Yo My Goodness! JAY 1A Enjoy a Fro-Yo on the go-go! Thank you for all of your support. A gentle reminder that we are still operating under some restrictions due to Covid-19 and it is therefore preferred if all orders are submitted online via flexischools or brought to the tuckshop by students in the morning. We have been really busy at the Tuckshop and we make all of our food with love. We know our community values our service. A reminder that if you want to take advantage of our whole class icy-pole option on your child’s birthday, orders should be placed online, again, via flexischools. Just enter your child’s name, select icy-pole and enter the number you require. If you are not sure of the number of students in your child’s class or you would like to order and pay over the phone instead, please call between 11:30am - 12:30pm on 4037 9572. Regards Dorit PAGLIARI—Tuckshop Convenor LIBRARY NEWS Library staff are still collecting “Containers for Library Books”. Students can still drop containers to the Library if they would like to help raise money for new books. These books have recently been purchased both online and at Op Shops in “as new” condition.
MUSIC NEWS Miss Hari, Mrs Hogan and Miss Curtis have been super impressed with choir over the last 2 weeks. Thank you to all the students for remembering their correct rehearsals and times. Please be reminded if students are sick and unwell (sore throats etc) we ask that they do not attend. We apologise again that the Year 1/2 choir is unable to run at the moment. Singing causes a large amount of air to expel from your mouth and is currently under separate COVID-19 guidelines. As a department and school community we understand that a lot of our younger students are missing choir but currently we do not have the resources to run it as safely as possible for both staff and students. As soon as this changes we will notify families. Families dropping students at stop, drop and go (Gate 4 and gate 2) with large instruments in the mornings are please reminded that this is a stop, drop and go area. Cars are unable to park in these drive through lanes. If students require help with instruments please let Miss Curtis know on rcurt35@eq.edu.au and an arrangement will be made. For the safety of everyone, please do not leave cars unattended in the stop, drop and go area. Regards Rachel CURTIS - Music Teacher STEM NEWS This year, National Science Week is from Saturday 15 - Friday 21 August. The 2020 theme is “Deep Blue”, celebrating our oceans; their beauty, importance, and fragility. Families are encouraged to talk to their children after watching: https://youtu.be/1WZsxVDTqcU Thanks to the efforts of the Edge Hill SS P&C Association, we can easily contribute directly to the improvement of our coastal environment through the recycling of containers. It will be quite a simple task to collect over 11,000 containers, if every student in the school brings just ten recyclable containers each (clean aluminium drink cans, tetra packs, small glass and plastic drink bottles) to their classroom. There will also be opportunities for great class discussions, funds raised and prizes for the class with the largest tally of containers. Date reminder: Tuesday 18 August, in the PAC, during first break from 11:15 – 11: 30am, all students from Years 4-6 can enjoy a Science Week “Brain Break” with Mr Hooper and Mr Harris providing 15 minutes of science fun and amazement. Unfortunately our annual Science Week Star Gazing and Science Evening is cancelled this year. As a consolation, clouds permitting, if you look directly overhead on Sunday evening 16 August at 6:44pm the International Space Station will be clearly visible. It will pass nicely between the Scorpio constellation in the west, and Jupiter and Saturn in the eastern sky, also very close together. The space station will travel towards the south-east and finally disappear over the horizon, three minutes later. HINT: Commence your viewing at 6:39pm, looking North-North West. Regards Michael HARRIS - STEM Coach
SPORT NEWS First up, thank you to all the fabulous students in Year 3 and 5 (and 5/6A) who have been coming prepared for pool lessons. Keep it up kids! Mr Ashton, Mrs Marron and Miss Rachel have been very impressed. We are very fortunate to have a heated pool - it's been a balmy 28 degrees! Students have been working hard to develop their water safety and survival skills. This term we have been fortunate to receive Sporting Schools funding to offer a football (soccer) program to 60 students in year 5 and 6. The program begins this week on Thursday morning from 7:45 - 8:45am for 5 consecutive weeks. This is a free program and perfect for students who wish to learn more about the sport and develop skills in a fun environment. Students were given the opportunity to register their interest and permission slips were sent home. Thank you to the students who have already returned theirs. We look forward to seeing those students for all 5 sessions. Don't forget your hat and shin-guards if you have them. Spiked football shoes need to stay at home. Congratulations to Kalista (6E) for being selected in the Peninsula 10-12 years Netball team to play at the State Championships later this year! Kalen (6D) also deserves a special mention as he has been selected to play in the TCC 10-12 years Cricket team. Way to go! We know you will represent our school with pride. Finally, a HUGE thank you goes out to Tennis Queensland for presenting each of our Prep students with a FREE tennis racquet and memories to last a life-time. Not everyone gets to meet a world number 1 tennis player! Meeting Ash Barty, John Millman, JP Smith and Lizette Cabrera was definitely a special treat for our kids - and Mr Ashton!
