Saint Clare School News ___________________________________________ Telling the Story of Saint Clare School This photo, taken at our last in-person Multicultural Dinner in October of 2019, reminds us how Saint Clare School continues to provide a safe learning environment for those who desire Catholic education, even through a global pandemic. We Need your Support, Now More than Ever! Saint Clare School was founded in 1856. Its two buildings are the main elementary building housed on 750 Washington Street (built around 1924) and the middle school annex, housed on 941 Lexington Street (built in the mid 1950s). The elementary school building is equipped with aging ceiling fans and an aging steam-pipe boiler system. The middle school building has a gas heating system. Each classroom has a portable air purifier and floor fan. The windows in the elementary school building were recently replaced with double-pane windows (completed late Fall 2018), thanks to the generosity of the Shea Homes Foundation. For the past five years, repairs to the boiler and steam pipes have cost the school approximately $5,000-$7,000 each year. In recent years, even before the advent of COVID-19, the Bay Area, and in particular, Santa Clara, has been experiencing extreme temperatures (lows in the 30s and highs in the 100s). In addition, the lack of precipitation in surrounding areas has resulted in high fire danger. As recently as August and September of 2020, the area experienced numerous fires resulting in extremely poor air quality with indices ranging from 100 to over 200, unhealthy levels for most of the population. COVID-19 has also presented additional challenges. CDC, State and County data have shown that proper ventilation plays a key role in mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Saint Clare School believes that we have a moral imperative to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our students and staff. Saint Clare School and other Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of San Jose are tuition-based organizations largely dependent on fundraising and donations. In order to offer faith-based education to families who desire Catholic education, we offer tuition assistance to one-third of our families, amounting to over $300,000 each year. Thanks to your generous support of our school, we are able to make Catholic education accessible to many struggling families. When a need such as the upgrade of our HVA/C becomes a priority, we once again depend on your partnership to continue the programs at Saint Clare School that has educated over tens of thousands of students since 1856. We ask you to reach out to your network of friends and family, especially those who have the means and have benefited from Catholic education, particularly at Saint Clare, to show their appreciation with a donation. Any amount will help us reach the goal to start the project this year. Visit https://www.stclare.school/supportus to find out how you can be part of our 165-year legacy! Boletim Paroquial Português Primeiro Domingo do Advento– C Reflexão pelo; Rev. Padre Francisco Rodrigues S.J. ______________________________________________ Erguei-vos e levantai a cabeça! Continuamos juntos. Vosso amigo no Senhor, Padre Francisco Rodrigues, S.J. 10
