Cold water fishery anglers will find some of the best salmon and trout fishing available in the Eastern U.S. For the angler looking for a new and exciting experience, the St. John River and Tributaries offer the only wild muskie fishery in the Eastern U.S. Long Lake, part of the Fish River Chain of Lakes, was voted one of the top 10 “must fish destinations for landlocked salmon” by a national magazine in 2007. Deboullie Pond gave up the new State Record Blue Back Trout (Land Locked Artic Char) in 2008. The Fish River Chain of Lakes The Fish River Chain of Lakes management region located in the “Crown of Maine” has long been famous for traditional coldwater species. The Fish River Lakes management region is 1 1/3 the size of the state of Connecticut. Prior planning should include maps showing all of the updated road systems particularly in the North Maine Woods, Inc. area west of Ashland. Summer visitors to this vast area of private woodlands must pass through a North Maine Woods gate. Information on fee schedules may be obtained by calling their Ashland office at: 207-435-6213. These gates do not operate in the winter fishing season. Speaking of the winter season, one should consider the Fish River Lakes management region for their ice fishing destination. Snow and ice comes early and stays late in this part of the state. Numerous snowmobile trails afford excellent opportunity to access lakes for fishing trips, or, if the fish aren’t biting, to enjoy the beautiful scenery in northern Maine. Anglers are encouraged to contact the regional fisheries biologists at (207) 435-3231 for additional information on the lakes in this region. Aroostook County Visitor Guide © visitaroostook.com 19
Motorcycling in Aroostook County Aroostook is the ideal destination to tour some of the best scenic and uncrowded roads in Maine and to check yourself in at one of the four corners of the United States. Located in downtown Madawaska, the Four Corners Park was created to honor those hearty souls who saddle their motorcycles for a grueling cross-country trek to the outermost reaches of the continental United States. As the Southern California Motorcycle Association’s primary challenge to long-distance bikers, the Four Corners Tour requires each candidate to travel by motorcycle to the four corners of the U.S in 21 days or less with Madawaska representing the most northeastern aspect (while Blaine in Washington, San Ysidro in California and Key West in Florida serve as the other three points--though none other with benefit of a park.) Agriculture of Aroostook County Ten percent of Aroostook County is tillable farmland and when you consider that the County is larger than Connecticut and Rhode Island combined, you understand how important agriculture is to the region. The primary crop continues to be the potato, however broccoli, canola and grains are all planted in large amounts annually, resulting in some of the most beautiful patchwork landscapes you will ever see. If you see someone working a farm stop and say “Hi,” you won’t believe how friendly the people are. In the fall you can see some fields being harvested by the most modern equipment available and other fields harvested using horse drawn equipment. Can you imagine a place that the public school systems close each fall so the children can work in the potato harvest? You don’t have to, it happens right here.
