This is a question that I ask myself every summer. I evaluate what is important and what is not important. “What do I need less and more of in my life?” A simple question, but as many simple questions are, the answer may be profound and will often lead to deep insights. For example, my answer to this question last summer caused me to start a more serious exercise routine that now has become a twice-weekly ritual. Take a moment, really One of the things I yearn for is less screen time. The seemingly stop everything you are ever-present pressure to respond quickly to emails and texts, or merely doing and ask yourself being entertained by an endless stream of videos, never ceases. The average American spends over 7 hours per day looking at a screen. Even if what do you yearn for? you just take a peek at the text or email but don’t respond, there is an impact! According to a University of California-Irvine study, regaining our initial momentum following an interruption can take between 10 and 20 minutes. It will take a conscious effort to break this cycle! Davis Arts Center offers a respite from this technological onslaught. Most of our classes are tech-free with an emphasis on using your hands and moving your body to express yourselves and make things. WELCOME Also, imagine the sense of accomplishment either you or your child will feel after making something. I still derive confidence and self esteem from both a poem I wrote in a writing class and a clay vessel I built here at Davis Arts Center. I do not remember ever having that sense of accomplishment after responding to a text! I know many parents who also want their children to escape being tethered to the screen this summer. Teaching your children that there are fun and interesting activities that are screen-free is what many of our classes, workshops and mini-camps provide! This is not to say we are luddites; we see the value of technology! We provide free wi-fi to our patrons and do have a few classes that rely on the creative potential that technology offers. Stacie Frerichs Executive Director PS. For those of you that cannot wait, put down your cellphone and challenge yourself to a puzzle in the catalog. For even more fun, ask your child to join! 2 - Davis Arts Center Catalog of Classes and Workshops Summer 2018
