Payless Cloth Pad Project Summary 2019 Panelist Orange Social Venture Prize Orange Liberia Haile Selassie Avenue-Capitol Bye Pass-Monrovia Liberia
1. Summary presentation of the Project Payless Cloth Pad is simply a reusable menstrual cloth /pad manufacturing project. This proposed social business project is Liberia’s first totally affordable and reusable sanitary cloth/pad manufacturing company and it is an alternative to disposable sanitary napkin targeting constrained female population unable to afford disposable sanitary napkin during menstrual and post-birth bleeding periods. This business will deal exclusively with local manufacturing of cloth pads for women and girls. Poor Menstrual Hygiene Management among other issues disturbs the way of life of women; their learning period is affected because they have to skip classes during their menstrual period, they fall to infections easily while trying to manage menstrual hygiene through unsafe procedures and they sometimes have to depend on people who ask for favor in return or maybe they just can’t easily afford a sanitary pad because of high price. For this and many other reasons, Payless Cloth Pad Project will use hand-made cloth pad from sewing machine to curve the occurrence of these issues and safe $100s of Liberian Dollars in the pockets of those who cannot afford and create better alternative for those who use unsafe methods and for first-time pad users. This manufacturing project will use the labor of females and youth and serve at some point a rehabilitation project for female inmates at the Monrovia Central Prison. Mission Payless Cloth Pad seeks to ensure that no one girl is left alone without a sanitary pad. The company will work to respond to the demands of the market. Objectives Payless Cloth Pad seeks to make sanitary pad affordable to every girl child at menarche (especially girls who skip classes due to lack of sanitary pad) restricted access due to economic reason. 2. Analysis of the market The production of disposable sanitary pad is an evolving market in Liberia. To date, there are up to 3 disposable sanitary pad production companies, 100s of retailers addressing the needs of millions of users. Purchasing power is higher in urban communities where more people can afford than rural communities, yet this doesn’t still mean there are users in urban communities who cannot afford to buy a sanitary pad. Market surveillance shows that there are no manufacturing company that produces reusable sanitary pad, least to say on a large scale, except instance where local NGOs conduct charity of reusable pad to few school girls. A regular pack of sanitary pad (15 pads) is sold at least L$ 200 Liberian Dollars versus a 54% percent of a population struggling to settle a day’s meal.
Our Strength The mode of operation of Payless Cloth Pad is tailored to the needs of users who face challenge in purchasing a sanitary pad, this motive sets Payless Cloth Pad far ahead of major competitors. Innovation, convenience, and decency are combinations that make up the archetype of our service. Besides, Payless Cloth Pad isn’t just a profit making idea or business model, it is an affordable attempt to address grave challenges faced by the least of our society. The service will throw a light on some forms of gender-based violence where a female wouldn’t depend solely on partners who would request a favor before buying them a single sanitary pad. Payless Cloth Pad will sell its re-usable cloth pad (pack with 3 pads) at a minimum $80 Liberian Dollars. 3. Identification of the market opportunity Menstruation is not a choice like sex and the use of condom. This situation makes Menstrual Hygiene a compulsion for every girl who reaches menarche. Such situation makes even larger and worthy the market chances. Speaking more to market chances, there are over 4.5 million Liberians and female makes 49.51% (2.2M) of this population, here poverty sits strongly at the rate of 54%. Owning to this situation, a social business manufacturing affordable reusable sanitary pads can even grow more opportunities because each girl child must have a sanitary pad. The market shows up in all regions including the capital city of Monrovia, yet much attention will be given to rural dwellers who must always experience low purchasing power. 4. Presentation of the product/service proposed A low-cost, reusable menstrual cloth /pad is an alternative to disposable pad which are not affordable by many females within our targeted group (low income earners). This low-cost, reusable menstrual cloth /pad will be manufactured from scarp cloths comfortable and for use over a period decided by the user. 5.
