SPECIAL EVENT GARDEN OF LIGHTS: A WINTER HOLIDAY EVENT Saturday, November 24 – Sunday, December 30, 5:30 – 8:30 pm nightly Location: Throughout the Garden Cost: $10 per person; $5 for ages 5–12 Mounts will be all a-twinkle in the evenings during the holiday season with thousands of holiday lights hanging from the trees, illuminating the walkways and landmark structures, with colorful LED trees and glowing light-balls, all along an easy-to-follow route throughout 15 different garden areas. It’s the perfect way to light-up and celebrate the holidays! NEW! THE ART OF GIFT GIVING: FUROSHIKI Friday, November 30, 2018 – 6:00 – 7:30 pm Location: Exhibit Hall Cost: $25 (members); $35 (non-members) Material fee: $10 (payable to the instructor) Presented by Reiko Nishioka, Museum Consultant The art of gift wrapping takes on new meaning with this cultural and visually aesthetic class. Furoshiki is a type of Japanese wrapping fabric in which a basic square shape is utilized to beautifully wrap and transport a variety of items. Reiko Nishioka will discuss the history of Furoshiki and demonstrate different wrapping techniques. Participants will receive their own Furoshiki (which is both reusable and eco-friendly) and will learn how to wrap and carry different shaped items. Wrapping wine bottles are the most amazing! Program size is limited to the first 12 participants. DECEMBER SPROUTING FOR THE HEALTH OF IT! Saturday, December 8, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Location: Mounts Auditorium Cost: $20 (members); $25 (non-members) Instructor: Sean Herbert, Got Sprouts? Sean Herbert, Owner of “Got Sprouts?” will tell his story and explain why you should be including sprouts, the most nutritious food on the planet into your daily diet. Sean will show you simple techniques to get you sprouting at home and introduce you to the Easy Sprouter, Tray Sprouts and the Tower Garden. In 1998 Jody Herbert was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer and began Chemotherapy. Half way through the therapy she realized it was not for her. She began looking for alternative healing protocols and learned the healing benefits of sprouts, juices, and the living-food lifestyle. In 2004 her husband, Sean was diagnosed with Severe Crohn’s disease requiring resection surgery. After following Jody’s advice, he began growing wheatgrass and sprouts at home and is now Crohn’s free and off all medication for the disease. The Herbert’s credit their miraculous healing to sprouts… the most nutritious food on the planet! Special musical performances by local schools will be held on select nights. BALLET PERFORMANCE Friday, December 21 Cost: Included with Garden of Lights entry The Dance Arts Conservatory, a performing arts school for dance and musical theatre, will tell a magnificent story through ballet. It will be a performance without words but a magical story told through each dancer. It’s a ballet performance you won’t want to miss. Located in Wellington, the Conservatory works with students of all ages and dance levels. They teach ballet, jazz, tap, creative movement and more!
JANUARY SPECIAL EXHIBIT TWISTED: PATRICK DOUGHERTY ENTWINED AT MOUNTS BOTANICAL GARDEN January – June; daily – 10:00 am to 4:00 pm $10 (non-members); $5 (ages 5-12); FREE for Mounts members To schedule a group tour, call 561-233-1757 North Carolina-based artist Patrick Dougherty is known for his Stickwork projects that combine both his carpentry skills and love of nature. Over the years, his work evolved from single pieces on conventional pedestals to monumental scale environmental works that require saplings by the truckload. He has built more than 250 sculptures over 30 years and become internationally acclaimed. His works have been seen in Scotland, Japan, Brussels and all over the United States, including two Florida gardens (McKee Botanical in Melbourne and Pinecrest Gardens in Miami) and his recent project at Cincinnati’s Taft Museum of Art. Dougherty’s massive, all-natural sculptures are original and created on site with the help of over 100 volunteers during a three-week Community Build. Enter the finest photographs that you’ve taken at Mounts Botanical Garden in our 12th Annual Photography Contest. Entry categories include plant life, animal life, people in the Garden, scenic/landscapes, nature close-ups and of course our incredible Stickwork exhibit, TWISTED. Official rules and entry form is available at Mounts.org, or stop by the Mounts office or the Garden Shop during normal business hours. Come to Mounts on March 1 for the judges’ positive critique of the contest entries and the announcement of the winners. There is a maximum of three photographs per individual. SPECIAL LECTURE SITES OF SEDUCTION: FRENCH GARDENS OF THE 18TH CENTURY Wednesday, January 23, 5:30 – 7:00 pm Location: Stickwork Installation Site & Exhibit Hall A Cost: $10 (non-members); FREE for Mounts members Presented by Dr. Eric T. Haskell, Professor Emeritus of French Studies & Humanities, Scripps College, California Join us for an exciting lecture with Dr. Eric T. Haskell. His talk will compliment and delve deeply into green architecture like our Stickwork exhibit, TWISTED. You’ll learn about French “fabriques,” where gardens are created to seduce the eye and transport the visitor into what Haskell calls a “paradisiac fantasy land in which these prefiguration’s of Disneyland pose as veritable dreamatoriums.” Dr. Haskell’s achievements and professional contributions have awarded him with the Palmes Academiques medal and prestigious membership as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.
FEBRUARY ROSE TRILOGY: GROWING GREAT ROSES IN SOUTH FLORIDA Location: Mounts Auditorium Cost: $45 (members); $50 (non-members) Produced by the Greater Palm Beach Rose Society Presented by Mike Becker, Master Rosarian, Bill Langford, Consulting Rosarian, and Geoff Coolidge, Consulting Rosarian – all certified by the American Rose Society RIGHT ROSE, RIGHT PLACE: THE BASICS OF ROSES Saturday, February 2, 10:00 – 11:30 am This program will present the best of the different types of roses based on size to accommodate any garden. You will learn the basics of growing great roses in our South Florida area: how much sun, location, planting and watering; presented with lots of pictures of roses throughout. Handouts will be provided to each attendee listing the best roses by type, size, fragrance and disease resistance. Handouts will also include local and mail order sources. GROWING ROSES FOR THE GREATEST SUCCESS Saturday February 9, 10:00 – 11:30 am By adding on to the previous class here we will delve into greater detail and specifics to growing the best roses, regardless of the level of experience in easily understood terms. Learn how to properly plant roses, the best soils and amendments, watering and fertilizing for the optimum success in your garden. Handouts will provide a list of soil amendments and fertilizers with both organic and synthetic options. ROSE PESTS: HOW TO IDENTIFY, PREVENT AND SOLVE ROSE PROBLEMS Saturday February 16, 10:00 – 11:30 am Our final class completes the Trilogy of Growing Great Roses in South Florida. When rose pests arise you will learn how to identify the different types of diseases and insect common to roses grown in South Florida and the best methods to solve those problems. Handouts will be provided that show pictures of common pests. It’s a great platform for conversation, education and positive change! Each viewing will be followed by a dynamic discussion with scientists and environmental advocates, enabling attendees to share thoughts, consider various viewpoints and hear the experts’ perspectives. This documentary invites you to follow one of the greatest nature artists of all time, Andy Goldsworthy, on a fantastic journey as he builds his large scale sculptures from New York to Scotland. Celebrated for his deep connection with the Earth, Goldsworthy uses natural ephemera to sculpt his pieces, illuminating the captivating nexus between nature and art. BRING THE FAMILY! Saturday, March 30, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm Location: In the Garden Cost: Included with regular Garden admission; parent will receive one complimentary ticket with each child’s admission. Additional adult tickets will be discounted. Hosted in Partnership with the Junior League of the Palm Beaches Children ages 4-9 and their parents are invited to participate in this family-friendly event hosted at the Garden. Kids in the Kitchen, an annual Junior League of the Palm Beaches (JLPB) initiative, is focused on family nutrition and healthy lifestyles for children. The Junior League of the Palm Beaches is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism and improving communities through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The event will feature fun nutrition and exercise activities, and opportunities for children to learn how to live a healthy lifestyle, all while having fun. Children will learn how to make simple healthy snacks and can taste healthy foods they’ve possibly never tried before. There will also be fun outdoor activities. Mounts Botanical Garden will also be hosting a short demonstration on gardening and healthy eating. Throughout the event, Kids in the Kitchen will feature free giveaways for every child who attends. For every child who attends Kids in the Kitchen, one complimentary adult ticket to Mounts Botanical Garden’s Stickwork exhibit will be provided. APRIL SUCCULENTS 101 Thursday, April 4, 10:00 – 11:30 am Location: Mounts Auditorium Cost: $25 (members); $35 (non-members) Succulent enthusiast Kimberly shares the secrets to caring for these low-maintenance plants and explains why they lend themselves so well to container arrangements. First, create a color wheel container composition and stress your plants to reveal beautiful hues. Then, make a gorgeous floral-style arrangement and add dimension and interest to your piece. Do you only have shade to give your succulents? Choose plants that thrive in low-light areas and learn how to care for their unique needs. SPECIAL EVENT PLANT-A-PALOOZA!
