WHAT’S HAPPENING at your Library? Mountains of Possibilities Summer is here, which means a break from school and time for fun summer vacations. I have fond memories of enjoying the lazy days of summer break— I also remember the groans of returning to school in the fall. I know I forgot so much during the summer each year. The Loveland Public Library has always been committed to helping reduce that summer slide. We are supporting children and teens beyond reading through our Summer Learning Program: Mountains of Possibilities. This program incorporates reading, hands-on learning, exploration and so much more. We know kids learn best when they are engaging with something that interests them. With this in mind, children and teens will have the opportunity to decide how they participate in the Summer Learning Program. The Library’s goal is to help kids learn throughout the summer so that they can return to the classroom engaged and ready for another successful school year. We’ll have special programs and events, reading and learning challenges, prize drawings, and more all summer long. Adults and families can participate by completing reading and technology challenges for a chance to win prizes. They also can support small business in Loveland and get special deals at participating businesses. Around the downtown area, participating merchants are offering special deals for anyone with library cards. By showing your library card, you have the opportunity to save money and support the Loveland business community. The Loveland Public Library invites you to enjoy the lazy days of summer exploring fresh ideas, learning new things and supporting local businesses. MOUNTAINS OF POSSIBILITIES Summer Learning Program What is the Summer Learning Program? Every summer, your library runs the Summer Learning Program (SLP) in June and July. This year’s program is Mountains of Possibilities. The program is designed for people of all ages to continue exploring throughout the summer and foster a joy of knowledge and learning year-round. We especially encourage kids and teens to participate while they are on a break from school. Research shows youth can lose up to three months of learning during the summer. This phenomenon is known as “summer slide” and can be prevented by reading as few as four books. We offer special events throughout the summer, and participants can register for their own challenge, which comes with opportunities to win prizes. Each age group has their own challenge structure. How Do I Participate? Each participant will complete missions to earn points toward their challenge. To register, create an account with an email/username and password at: http://loveland.readsquared.com/ Parents can create “family” accounts by clicking the “myself + other readers” tab. Parents will be asked about their own personal information first and then can add additional readers. Registration is based on age group, and each age group’s challenges and missions are structured a little differently: Children – ages 0-10 Teen – ages 11-17 (or entering grades 6-12) Adult – ages 18+ Once you register, you can participate online with ReadSquared, which tracks your activities, points, and badges earned. There’s even an app you can add to your phone or tablet to help you keep track on the go. You don’t MOUNTAINS OF have to keep track of your progress online, though. We also have print logs POSSIBILITIES and more information at each division’s service desk at the library. LOVELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM 2022 pg. pg. 73
What About Technology Missions? You can find technology missions in your missions list too! These special missions will help you get familiar with the Makerspace Lab on the second floor and introduce you to using maker technology like 3D printers. There are special technology classes you can register for, and every Friday in June and July from 2-4pm, we’ll have an open house where you can visit the Makerspace Lab to learn about the different equipment available for your creative projects. Are There Special Deals? You can use your library card to get special deals at participating businesses in June and July! Enjoy popcorn as you watch the latest blockbuster, gather your friends for laser tag and arcade games, or indulge in delicious treats around town. See page 6 for details.
