The Options: All students study Irish, English, Maths, P.E, Guidance and Re(Non exam) Students choose the four optional subjects in order of preference. Students can choose an eighth subject from Music,L.C.V.P,Applied Maths or Religious Ed 23/01/2019 7

Biology Three sections to be studied: The Unit of Life/The Cell/The Organism. More ‘wordy’ than Chemistry or Physics. Practical work, laboratory work and fieldwork. 100% of the subject is examined in the terminal written exam in June. Useful for courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Veterinary, Food Science, and Physiotherapy.
Chemistry: It is the composition of substances, their properties, and reactions .It is known as the central science as it connects Biology,Physics and Geography. Students learn off the chemical components of prescribed experiments as it is an experimental subject. Useful, and often needed for, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary, Pharmacy, Applied Chemistry, Engineering, Physiotherapy, Environmental Science.
Physics: How does the electric motor work??Why is it that sound can go around corners but light cannot? The answer to these questions and many more can be found in the study of Physics. Highly recommended if interested in Engineering, Technology, Aviation, Optometry, Architecture, Science, Dentistry. Essential for some courses. Note: Higher level Mathematics is not a requirement for Leaving Certificate Physics topics – however it is better suited to students with mathematical inclination.
Agricultural Science The underlying principles and practices of agriculture are studied. Investigations are taken in: Plants and animals Soils Microbiology Farming Practices/Crops Genetics
Agricultural Science cont…. The exam consists of a terminal paper(75%)and work assessed makes up 25%. Students will be taken on a field trip to a working farm as part of their learning.
Applied Mathematics(offered as an 8th subject) Based on the practical application of Maths to everyday problems in Engineering and Science Those who wish to study Engineering, Science, Actuary, Astronomy,Physics or Mathematics in 3rd level will find 1st year easier if they have taken Applied Maths in the Leaving Certificate.
Science cont… A small number of courses require TWO Science subjects. If one is seriously interested in the Sciences it is recommended to take TWO for the Leaving Cert. (see www.qualifax.ie ) Remember there are Labour Shortages in the Science and Technology sectors so if you have an interest in Science, go for it! It is recommended that students need to have studied Science for Junior Cycle to take Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Agricultural Science, 23/01/2019 16
Construction Studies (CBS) Provides students with an introduction to the knowledge and skills involved in construction technology and construction materials. It is recommended that a student taking Construction studies has a general interest in buildings and the built environment as well as in design and practical work.
Construction Studies Subject is assessed at two levels.-Ordinary and Higher. It includes a written exam(50%) a practical test(25%) and an assessment of student project work(25%) Career Areas:Building Management,Carpentry,Electrician,Town Planning,Heating & Ventilation and Housing Management.
Languages French & German: The 4 main elements of study are reading comprehension, listening comprehension ,oral assessment and written. Increase in courses with a continental language built into them-good employment prospects.
Languages cont… A foreign language is useful for many careers including: Translator, Interpreter, Tourism, Journalism, Management, International Marketing, etc. Remember a Third Language is needed for entry into N.U.I colleges unless the exemption has been granted.- (U.C.C, U.C.D, N.U.I.Maynooth ,N.U.I.Galway ,Royal College of Surgeons, St Angela’s College Sligo, N.C.A.D, Inst of Public Administration and Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy. 23/01/2019 23

Business Deals with all aspects of the Business world; three areas:Legislation, Enterprise, Environment. Business Studies, though not essential, forms an intricate part of many courses in college as well as Business courses and is also relevant to numerous careers such as: , Law, Teaching, Sales, Management, Insurance, Taxation and Marketing.
Accountancy Students who enjoy the book keeping part of Junior Certificate Business should consider Accountancy. Analysis & interpretation of accounts is the core activity. Those who are strong in numerical and reasoning skills could enjoy and be successful at this subject. Useful for careers in Accountancy, Finance, Marketing, Management, Taxation, Banking, Teaching, ICT, Insurance etc.
Economics Economics covers a wide range of topics including inflation, banking, international trade, the EU, the role of the Government in the control of the economy, competition and markets. A good preparation for entry to many third level Business, Journalism, Finance and Management courses

History Politics, Economics, Religion and Philosophy. 20% now going to project. Not necessary to study history at Leaving Cert. level in order to study it at Third Level. Useful for careers in Research, Teaching, Politics, Journalism, Law and Librarianship.
Geography A study of the relationship between human activities and the physical environment Field work is mandatory.(20%). Accepted as a Science subject for Science and Pharmacy in Trinity College Dublin. Useful for careers in Planning, Ecology, Environmental Science, Teaching, Surveying, Mapping, Meteorology.
Religious Education(offered as an 8th subject The study of Religious Education develops skills of analysis, interpretation, reflection and comparison in relation to global cultures and social issues. Assessment: Coursework -essay(20%), Terminal written paper (80%). Useful for: Law, Journalism, Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, Politics, Philosophy, Education. 23/01/2019 31
Art The Art course is comprised of Art Appreciation and History of Art, incorporating topics such as still life, graphic design, life sketching, and craft. NCAD accept it instead of a 3rd Language. Highly recommended for Architecture. Useful for Marketing and Design, Media, Fashion Design. Students need a portfolio to apply to Art college.
Music(offered as an 8th subject) Three main activities: Performance , Listening and Composition . Most colleges require students who want to pursue Music to take a special entrance test. Useful for Media work, Teaching, Conducting, Performing, Sound Engineering, Communications etc. 23/01/2019 33
Home-Economics Practical work ,Biology ,Business and Food science. Journal (20%) e.g Osteoporosis Develops an interest in current affairs, social issues and family life. Useful for careers in the Food industry, Tourism, Clothing and Design, Childcare and Hotel Management.
L.C.V.P(offered as an 8th subject) Two link modules-Preparation for Work & Enterprise Education. Practical subject with an emphasis on transferable skills which are essential for college entry, setting up your own business and the world of work While LCVP may be used for points purposes, it does not count as one of the six subjects acceptable to enter N.U.I colleges.

BONUS POINTS FOR MATHS All students presenting a H6 or above in HL mathematics will have 25 points added to their score for mathematics; e.g. if a student received a H6 in HL Maths she would receive 46 points + 25 points = 71 points. Universities involved: UCD, DCU, NUI Galway, Trinity, UCC, UL, NUI Maynooth, RCSI, D.I.T.

Where will the jobs be? 6 out of every 10 jobs will be in Engineering, Food, Science and Technology related areas
How can parents/guardians help? Encourage them to be pro-active in their research. Encourage discussion about careers among siblings and friends. Encourage self-responsibility for decision-making.
