A Message from the President Dear Notre Dame Community, As contemporary people we live in a world filled with images. Some are literal. Some are symbolic. This issue of the NDA Magazine creatively weaves together images of students, alumni and families to help tell the story of Notre Dame Academy in a way that captures our experience of being a community in 2021. NDA is the result of many streams flowing into the current school community of Our Lady of the Bay. The image of lace pictured below comes from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet who founded and operated St. Joseph Academy, a predecessor school of NDA. It refers to one of the original works of the sisters in 17th century France as they made and taught other women how to make lace which was a precious commodity at the time. As a symbol the lace serves to help describe our community at NDA as we journey together to God, to the future lives of our students and to our collective future as a school serving the people of Greater Green Bay. In the book “That All May Be One,” Sr. Carol Allan and Martha Malinski describe that: “Lace threads symbolize the relational call of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the call to unifying love that unites neighbor with neighbor, and neighbor with God, without distinction. The spaces in the lace threads signify brokenness and oppression. These spaces also show an openness to the Spirit who lives among all creation.” This past year has been a time of trial for us as a community as we wrestle with different approaches to shared problems. The distances imposed by the pandemic have caused us to examine the threads that bind us to each other. We have also had to explore the spaces between us as we hope for the Spirit to fill us with singular moments of God’s grace to learn, to serve and to love. This issue of the NDA Magazine chronicles parts of our journey. We hope that the images of students’ energy, of faculty and staff care, of alumni achievements, and friends’ support will encourage and engage your way on our shared journey. Best regards, Thomas J. Kiely, DHL President tkiely@notredameacademy.com NOTRE DAME ACADEMY | WWW.NOTREDAMEACADEMY.COM | 3
Admissions Address As we celebrate over 125 years of Catholic High School education in Green Bay, Notre Dame Academy adopted a new tagline “Prepares Lead- ers for College & Life.” Our tradition of Catholic education and prepar- ing leaders for college and life embraces the foundation laid by St. Joseph Academy, Abbot Pennings, Our Lady of Premontre, Central Cath- olic and St. Norbert High Schools. Today, NDA is a high-caliber educational com- munity that is focused on outstanding learning and creating a lifetime of opportunity for all students. NDA’s curriculum is built upon the foundational belief that faith and reason work together in all learning. We believe in challeng- ing every student’s critical thinking and problem-solving ability. We offer a globally focused education with a leading International Baccalaureate program. Our curriculum is college preparatory and all students are held to high expectations. The Class of 2021 had 569 college acceptances. We encourage students to develop their gifts and talents and contribute meaningfully to their community and the world. Our students are a talented and unique group of individuals from varied geographic, ethnic, economic and religious backgrounds that reflect the population of the Green Bay area. As a school founded within the ministry of the Catholic Church, we are committed to offering tuition as- sistance, helping to ensure every family receives the best value possible for a Catholic, college preparatory education. NDA is available and accessible to all students due to its tuition assistance programs. Last year, over half of our students received tuition assistance totaling $2.6 million. The investment made at NDA pays off in reduced college costs, a variety of scholarships and increased college acceptance rates. The Class of 2021 was offered $10.8 million in scholarship offers. The NDA experience is one of academic rigor, a welcoming Catholic community and a culture of high expectations. It is our hope that this simple phrase “Prepares Leaders for College & Life” is the essence of what we accomplish collectively as the NDA community. He received NDA’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award in 2012 for being an outstanding example of Christ’s love being lived out in the world and being the personification of the Maryknoll Missionary. Upon his ordination in 1956, he was assigned to present day Tanzania in Africa. His work in Africa included starting Kowak clinic and hospital, helping those with AIDS, and the beginning of Kowak Girls Secondary School. Following several decades in Af- rica, Rev. Going behind the scenes with TWO of NDA’s National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists New video equipment providing new experiences for students Harrison James and Alex Prikockis both prefer not to be the center of attention. The Notre Dame Academy seniors would much rather contribute behind the scenes for projects than playing a leading part in front of an audience. However, James and Prikockis knew that wouldn’t be the case on the morning of Sept. 15 as they looked at the script in preparing to produce the video stream each classroom watches at the start of the day. “I got an email the day before saying I would need to be there for the morning an- nouncements, which worked out well because I was already on the camera crew so I was going to be there anyway,” Prikockis said. James added, “In the morning an- nouncements planning sheet it had a thing that said, ‘National Merit announcement.’ … I thought, I know what this is for.” It didn’t take much detective work for the friends to figure out they were both mo- mentarily going to have to step out of their comfort zone as NDA principal Patrick Browne brought them on-screen to congratulate them on being National Merit Schol- arship Semifinalists this year. Nick Massabni and Chris Mitchell joined James and Prikockis in earning the honor. “The NMS Semifinalist distinction is an honor that comes with steadfast academic discipline,” NDA college counselor Becky Bain said. “Having five qualifiers this year is exciting – it is NDA's highest in three years. I am very proud of our students.” The recognition is a product of the students’ hard work and focus as the NDA faculty continue to keep students on track to achieving their goals through the pandemic. Just as important as helping students obtain high academic marks is giving them as many real-life experiences as possible. The video equipment NDA purchased this year is giving students like James and Prikockis new ways to shine as they learn.
