Premium Irish Drama on RTÉ 2018-2019 Mothers’ Day 1 x 90 minutes - RTÉ One, September 2nd 2018, 9.30pm On the day before Mother’s Day 1993, Colin & Wendy Parry’s lives are torn apart when their youngest son Tim is killed in a terrorist attack by the IRA in Warrington’s town centre. The attack shocks ordinary people on both sides of the Irish Sea. Sue McHugh, an unassuming and normally shy Dublin housewife, is deeply affected by the Vicky McClure tragedy. Spurred into action by the events in Warrington and the hope that she can make a difference, Sue urges people across Ireland to demonstrate that the killings on all sides must stop. But has Sue underestimated the challenge of brokering peace in a community that has known only conflict? As the grieving Parrys search desperately for answers to their son’s senseless killing, they form an alliance with Sue, her husband Arthur, and her Peace ‘93 movement, travelling to Dublin in a bid to bring about peace and ensure Tim’s enduring legacy is one of hope and tolerance. Based on real events. Doing Money 1 x 90 minutes - October 21st 2018, 9.30pm Written by Gwyneth Hughes and directed by Lynsey Miller, Doing Money is a shocking true story about slavery in modern Britain. This fact-based one-off drama follows the heart-breaking and compelling story of Ana, a young Romanian woman snatched in broad daylight from a London street, trafficked to Ireland and used as a sex slave in a series of ‘pop up’ brothels. Ana’s story offers a tense and thought-provoking thriller, with fascinating insights into the difficulties of policing a form Karen Hassan of modern slavery that hides in plain sight. It exposes just how big business “doing money” is. Resistance 5 x 1 hours - RTÉ One. 6th January 2019, 9.30pm Resistance is a thriller set in Ireland in 1920, a time when everything is double, with opposing states working overtly and covertly to destabilise the other. The precarious circumstances are dramatized through the families and the relationships of our protagonists. Everyone is fighting for their lives, and for the future. This is a world of shadows and echoes; double-agents and unreliable narrators at a time of high tension, fear Brian Gleeson and anxiety. It’s a world of contrast too; the rooftops & the cellars and rat-runs; the warm and opulent receptions of the Butler’s household and the mean tenements where epidemics have indiscriminately decimated the popu- lation and left children to fend for themselves; the besieged Dublin Castle in a permanent state of lockdown and the rural communities caught in the crossfire of the Black & Tans and the Flying Columns, brutalised by both sides if they’re suspected of collaboration. In historical terms the series dramatises the build up to and violent fallout from the events of Bloody Sunday (21 November 1920). In response to the British escalating their espionage war and tightening the noose on Michael Collins’ squad and IRA Flying Columns, Collins organised a spate of assassinations. This in turn led to reprisals by the British army at Croke Park. This was also the moment at which the British secretly changed their stance of refusing to ‘talk to terrorists’, and made the first overtures of a peace treaty. The Dublin Murders 8 x 1 hours - RTÉ One Autumn 2019 The Dublin Murders is an eight-part series written by Sarah Phelps based on the work of Dublin’s leading crime novelist, Tana French and drawn from French’s first two novels – In the Woods and The Likeness. The series will be produced by Euston Films, Veritas Entertainment Group and Element Pictures (The Room). Tana French The Dublin Murder Squad novels have won major awards and topped bestseller lists across the world. Each novel is led by a different detective from the same Dublin squad and their signature is an intense emotional connection between cop and crime, underpinned by a disturbing tremor from another darker influence. Brilliantly blending the two first books in the Dublin Murder Squad series, Sarah Phelps reacts to the dark drama of the novels and delivers a contemporary world of psychological mystery and darkness with a tap- root that is sunk deep in Ireland’s past.
