ROTARY DISTRICT 7570 The InformerMONTHLY NEWSLETTER IN THIS ISSUE DG Message Club & Committee News Hunger Initiative Tracking
Hello, Rotarians! Last month I did my official District Governor visit to Area 9 at a beautiful outdoor facility on the campus of Virginia Tech. It was a great opportunity to enjoy fellowship with the local Rotarians and learn about the great things happening in Area 9. I was pleasantly surprised at the end of the meeting when Kenneth D’Amato, President of the Rotary Club of Blacksburg, presented me with a book that the club would donate to their local library in my honor. My club, the Rotary Club of Bristol VA-TN, does this, as well! We donate a book to the children’s section of the Bristol Public Library each week in honor of that week’s speaker. What does your club do to support this month’s Rotary focus of Supporting Education? Have you told your community about what you do? Did you know that more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate? That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population. Don’t forget to have a Rotary Day of Service on this month’s focus. It doesn’t have to be anything grand (although it totally could be). Here are some ideas: Donate books to your neighborhood’s “Little Free Library” Read to a local school or community group Donate to a scholarship fund Provide supplies to an area school Donate to the Rotary Foundation and support one of the many projects bringing basic education and literacy to the world After you complete your service, it is time to tell the world! Post a picture on social media and explain how you and your club supports education. Make sure to tag Rotary District 7570 so we can share your Day of Service! Rotarians make a huge impact – in our communities, across our District, and around the world. Thank you for your work to support education! Yours in Rotary Service, Tara Ellis District Governor ROTARY SUPPORTING 2021-2022 EDUCATION

NEW MARKET ROTARY CLUB PROVIDES DISASTER RELIEF TO HAITI by Ros Poplar, Rotary Club of New Market The New Market Rotary Club recently provided disaster relief to the earthquake victims in Haiti through a donation of a shelter box. The Shelter Box program was created by Rotary International to provide emergency relief to those impacted by natural disasters. Most boxes include family- size tents, though the contents differ depending on the disaster and climate. Many are packed with solar lights, water storage and purification equipment, thermal blankets, and cooking utensils. Depending on need, Shelter Kits may be utilized which are smaller aid packages that include tools, ropes, and heavy tarpaulins used to provide emergency shelter and repair damaged structures. Funds for this effort were raised through donations made at the Club’s annual family pool party hosted by Mr. “Skip” Constable. More information about this life saving program can be found here. READY FOR A WEEK IN PERU? by PDG Woody Sadler, Wheelchair Committee Chair Join the District Wheelchair Committee for a week in Peru to help distribute 264 wheelchairs in early December! Enjoy the satisfaction of helping another individual create a new life with the presentation of a wheelchair. All Rotarians are invited to be a part of this team. In addition to distributing wheelchairs, participants will experience the sights and sounds of another culture, make new friends, and experience Rotary fellowship in another country. If you are interested, please contact Woody. Your interest is not binding but will help Woody determine the number of individuals that are interested. The status of COVID will determine if the Committee will travel to Peru. While Peru had a recent outbreak, Rotarians in Peru say the country is projected to be 70 percent vaccinated by that time and the summer season may also help ease the spread.
FOUNDATION CELEBRATION Registration is now open for the Rotary District 7570 Foundation Celebration! This year’s goal is to celebrate the good being accomplished in the world, to recognize donors throughout the District, and encourage others to participate in giving to The Rotary Foundation (and to have a great time)! This event is also to say “thank you” to Rotarians for participating at any level with The Rotary Foundation. Our theme this year is “Diamonds and Denim” so come to Bristol and enjoy an evening of fun, food, music, and fellowship with your Rotary friends. Information on where to stay, what to do while you are in town, ideas of what to wear that evening, and much more is available at www.7570givesback.com We hope that you will join us on November 5! THE MOO CREW AND ROTARY ELVES IN ACTION by Joey Cornwell, Rotary Club of Rocky Mount The Rotary Club of Rocky Mount began accepting resumes for their new ‘Moo’ Crew in early August and, once assembled, the Crew went to work! Their first purchase of 15 gallons of milk for the Heavenly Manna Food Bank of Franklin County, VA was made on August 16th. The second delivery of 15 gallons of milk for the month was made on August 30th. The Crew will be meeting every other Monday for some early morning fellowship followed by their milk purchase and delivery. Each delivery will total approximately 115 meals toward the Feed 10 Million Challenge. This Crew is after that Hunger Event Record of 24 events set last year! The Rotary Elves of Rocky Mount also stepped up their game, as they did not want the ‘Moo’ Crew to get all the attention in August! Their first delivery of toys, games, and books for the year to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital was made on August 26th. This donation was delivered to Carilion’s Pediatrics Team for their toy room for infant and youth patients who find themselves in the hospital during a holiday or birthday. These gifts are able to be selected by parents or nurses from storage then wrapped with supplied paper and bows. The presents are then delivered to patients to ease the parent’s burdens of remembering holidays when all they want to do is concentrate on their child's well-being and bring happiness to a child's day.
ROTARY FELLOWSHIPS BUILD LASTING CONNECTIONS by Michael Abraham, Rotary Fellowship One of the great benefits of your Rotary membership is the Rotary Fellowships, groups of like-minded Rotarians around the world who share a common interest in sports, hobbies, recreational activities, or professions. Making connections through fellowships will enhance your Rotary experience by making worldwide connections. Each fellowship functions independently of Rotary International, establishing its own rules, dues, and administrative structure. Fellowships are open to all Rotarians and family members. There are over 70 fellowships to join! Recreational activities include flying, golf, horseback riding, curling, sailing, scuba diving and motorcycling. Professions include authors and writers, doctors, lawyers, and educators. Interests include Latin culture, jazz, music, wine, and Indian culture. My favorite is the ITHF - the International Travel and Hosting Fellowship. My wife and I have been guests for meals, travel, and recreation with other members in Norway, Iceland, and New Zealand. The best part of every travel experience is the people you meet. The ITHF provides a great way to make lifelong friends. As you know these great people share your commitment to Service Above Self. Learn more about Rotary Fellowships here. TRACKING OUR MEMBERSHIP NUMBERS Our District membership numbers continue to fluctuate and, unfortunately, our District’s trend is downward. You can view our current membership numbers and our trend data here. You can help shift these numbers to positive! Invite someone to Rotary this week! The District Membership Committee and Area Advocates are available to speak to your club, as well. Just reach out and get one of us on your calendar. Let’s grow Rotary together!
