PRAIRIE ROSE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FEBRUARY 2021 105 Lucas Avenue R2R 2S8 Newsletter Ph: 204 633 4092 Fax: 204 633 4902 Ken Romaniuk, Principal February is the month that we celebrate Reading, Valentine’s, 100 Days of School and Louis Riel Day. This marks the half way point for the 2020 – 2021 school year. As we begin our second half of the school year let us remember to focus on our learning and set meaningful targets to further enhance our work and effort. Report Cards will be going home again in March to share information on how students are performing and highlighting their successes. Remote Learning families are reminded to have students active and participating in Remote Learning daily and to have a quiet space to work in. The teachers are here to help answer and assist with what ever is needed. All students will be given a Report Card for Term 2 and we encourage all Remote Learners to complete work daily finish all assignments. Please email or message your teacher if you have any questions. We have an exciting week of activities planned for our students to help promote and further encourage the love of reading. Students will have the opportunity to read and share stories with each other during the activities planned for our special week. Reading is so important, as we face it in everything we do. From reading instructions, following a recipe or the directions on how to assemble a new piece of Ikea furniture we read every day. Even with technology we must be able to read the screen and follow the next steps. During the I Love To Read Month, please take some special time to celebrate reading with your children. Perhaps find that special book that you remember as a child and reread it together. Or visit a book store and purchase a new family favorite. It is important for our children to read daily. We appreciate your help and assistance with this. As the Pandemic Restrictions continue we remind everyone of some important guidelines we must all follow: - Stay home if you or any member of your household is ill or has been tested for Covid. - Wear a Mask - Stay 6 Feet or 2 Meters apart when ever possible - Hand washing is very important - Follow all Public Health Orders - Work Together to Keep Us All Safe! We look forward to another sensational month ahead filled with reading, learning and fun. Mr. Romaniuk

AM/PM N/K News by Ms. Uskalo Can you believe it’s already February? Time is flying by! What has happened: Winter weather has finally come and room 113 has been reinforcing this season with chants, poems, and art projects related to our unit theme. We continued to practice identifying letters K, V, Z, G, H, J, Q, X, & Y and their sounds through our daily learning stations. Students have also continued their daily math practice, counting and printing numbers as well as learning how to show numbers in two parts to 5. What’s to come: February will be a fun filled month! We are looking forward to practicing the remaining letters A, E, I, O & U. Students will investigate animals of the Arctic and learn how animals stay warm in the cold weather. With Valentines day just around the corner, students will explore different ways to show love and kindness to those around us. Reminders: With the snow and cold weather, every child needs to be sent to school with gloves, snow pants, jacket, hat, and snow boots. Please do the daily screening before coming to school. If any family members are symptomatic, the entire household must self-isolate. No classes February 8th Due to pandemic restrictions, please DO NOT send Valentine cards or treats. Grade 1 & 2 News by Ms. Barros February is here! This month we will focus on our LOVE for reading! I Love to Read week will look different this year then it usually does but we will find a way to celebrate reading. We have learned about Canadian Symbols and started to work on recognizing Canadian coins. The Water Cycle is up next in our Science plans and we will have lots of fun with that unit. In Language arts we are reading and writing poems. We are Poets! Be sure to ask us which poems we enjoyed writing the most. We have also been listening to a read aloud of the novel “Charlotte’s Web” and looking forward to finishing it and celebrating with the movie. Near Valentines Day we will be celebrating our 100th day of school! Wow it is flying by. We will also we showing how we care for each other by making Love Links made out of paper chains with positive message about each other. I look forward to combining the work of the students at home and in class to make a long chain to decorate the class! We did some pretty cool art related to our Symmetry math unit. We made Symmetrical paint monsters with lots of eyes and details. We even sketched a portrait of our beautiful faces using what we learned with symmetry. We enjoyed the mild January days we had and have accepted our typical winter weather. We will see what happens on Ground Hog day! Will he see his shadow? How much longer will winter stick around? We will make the best of whatever we get. Great work to all the students working from home. You continue to put forth so much effort and I am so proud of you. Hope everyone continues to stay safe, talk to you next month! Prairie Rose Elementary School FEBRUARY, 2021 Newsletter Page 4
Grade 1 & 2 News by Ms. Bray Time sure flies when you’re having fun!! On Team 208 we are continuing to build on our skills and knowledge in all subject areas. Our main theme this month was “Kindness”. We talked about what kindness means and why it is important. We brainstormed how we show kindness to each other at school, to our families, in our community and to the environment. Each of us took a picture demonstrating kindness in our home and wrote about what we are doing to show kindness. (Thank you families for submitting the photos.) We focused on descriptive writing, word choice and using voice. Team 208 is planning some special surprises that will further demonstrate how we can be kind to others. Team 208 has been working hard in Daily 5. We are reading higher leveled books which means our reading is improving! We always take time to celebrate that! Something new this month was “Flashlight Fridays!” On Fridays we spend some of our Daily 5 time reading in the dark...with headlamps on of course! It’s a class favourite!! We read the book, “Snowmen At Night”. In Art, we drew our own snowmen and learned about light and shadow using chalk pastels. Then, we wrote our own ideas about what we would do if we were snowmen at night!! It was a fun project! In Math, we are learning different “thinking strategies” for addition. This will help us to add numbers mentally, without using our fingers, etc. The activities we do to practice these strategies are fun and help us learn quickly. We are also learning about 2-D shapes and 3-D objects and are going on a classroom hunt for these shapes and objects. Our morning number work challenges us everyday. In Science, we are learning about the 6 different animals groups. Ask us about the characteristics of mammals, fish, insects, birds, reptiles or amphibians! As we move into February, there is so much to look forward to! We have Valentine’s Day, 100 Day and I Love To Read celebrations all happening next month. It’s going to be another busy one!! Grade 3 & 4 News by Mr. Young Room 212 has been learning about the parts of speech, specifically verbs, nouns and adjectives. We are also working hard on learning our times tables and using arrays to help us visualize multiplication stories as being in rows and col- umns. We are all still remembering to self check for symptoms and to stay home when we don’t feel good. In social stud- ies, we did a unit on the country of Zimbabwe and compared our climate and daily life with that of the people of Zimba- bwe. In science we are just starting to learn about light, its characteristics, how it travels and other properties. We are continuing to learn lots by using the computer program Dreambox for math lessons and activities. In art we made pictures of the boreal forest at sunset using tissue paper for the sky colors instead of paint. We also wrote haiku poems using the structure 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second and 5 again in the third line. Grade 3 & 4 News by Mrs. Simons What a great January it was! It didn’t take us long to get back into the swing of things! We started and completed our Science unit on Sound. We learned all about sound with different experiments and projects, both at school and through Seesaw at home! I really enjoyed seeing the instruments that the class created for their final projects! We had fun watching the videos of each student playing and presenting their instrument. Now that we’re finished Sound, we are beginning our next Social Studies topic where we will be Exploring the World. During the first week back to school after the holidays, the students at home and at school voted for our next class novel. The Chocolate Touch won by almost 100% of the votes! We really enjoyed the story and working on different activities about the novel. Once we finished the novel, we voted for our next one, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle won! We just started it, and are looking forward to what happens in the story. In Art, we learned about Pop Art and the artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. We created Onomatopoeia art using Lichtenstein’s style. Our bright and bold art looks great on our Science Sound board! In math, we have been focusing on addition strategies. We’ve been working on different strategies to help us with adding one-digit, two-digit and even some three-digit numbers! Next up, we will work on subtraction strategies and how to tell time. We started math drills which are helping us with our compatibles of ten math facts. We are getting really quick at them, and will be moving on to compatibles of 20 very soon! We completed our reading and writing assessments in January. The students really enjoyed the writing topics and shared some really great ideas in their writing! Room 214 has been getting very creative with keeping things interesting during indoor recess now that the weather has been pretty cold. Their new favourite thing is creating forts under their desks! The forts have quickly become a favourite spot for silent reading and mindfulness activities! We are looking forward to Valentine’s Day and I Love to Read Week this month. Thank you to everyone for remembering Dreambox and Raz-Kids at home! Prairie Rose Elementary School FEBRUARY, 2021 Newsletter Page 8
Gr. 5 & 6 News by Mr. Tosczak Brrrrrrr, it’s cold! Where did the warmer weather go!? Hi there again! Valentines Day is just around the corner! I can’t wait to eat all the candies and chocolates and….. Oh wait sorry, I was day dreaming about chocolates and candies and didn’t see you there. Since you’re here I might as well tell you all about what 211 has been up to the last month! First up is Science! Did you know that we cannot survive without water? Or that the average human needs at least 2000 calories a day? We have learned lots of interesting facts! We also learned about what kinds of nutrients our bodies need to function and what types of foods have them. We explored how to read a food label and what kind of Information is on a food label. How often do you check your food labels? If you don’t you should start now! Quick go check your pantry... Just kidding, but it is important to know about the kinds of ingredients that are in your food. Next is Social Studies! We learned all about the different provinces and cities in Canada as well as the different levels of government. There are three levels of government, Municipal, Provincial and Federal and they all have different responsibilities. We also started learning about the fundamental beliefs that Canada is known for. It has been very interesting! In ELA, we continue to practice our reading and writing skills each and every day in daily 5 and other activities. In math, we have been spending a lot of time working on our problem solving skills and how to solve problems that include multiple steps. Feel free to ask us to share some of the work we have been on seesaw. Thanks for checking in with how things are going in room 211, we hope everyone has a safe and wonderful February! Sincerely, the students from room 211 P.S. Enjoy some of art work done by our remote learners and in class students tomatch the book they are currently reading. Gr. 5 & 6 Student News by Mr. Forbister What a wild January! Even though we came back to school very early in the month, time flew by! Before we knew it, it was already February. In our Language Arts learning we started to look at some reading comprehension strategies. When we are reading, there are certain traits that we need to look for, stop, and think about to help us understand more about the text. We are also learning to write clear, detailed paragraphs with beginning and ending sentences. We’re blasting off for our next science unit: Space! We are looking at the solar system, the rotation of the earth, and gravity. We were surprised to see that objects that had different masses fell to the ground at the same speed. Next we will take a closer look at some of the planets in small research projects! Finally, in Math we have been looking at area and perimeter. When we were using graph paper to examine the area of different shapes we realized: this looks a lot like Minecraft! With that in mind, we started to look at the area and perime- ter of shapes in Minecraft, and even created our own multi-level houses. It was so fun that we went looking for other kinds of buildings to build and we realized something. We should build Prairie Rose in Minecraft. After measuring the hallways, classrooms, and gym, we got to work. It’s going to look great! Thank you for taking the time to read our classroom news. We are going to have an even busier February! Physical Education News by Mr. Smoke: Bump, Set, Serve! With 2020 behind us, students and staff are off to a great start in the gym! The Prairie Rose students have all come back to school with a positive attitude and a willingness to stay creative in a physically active setting. Students in grade 3-6 started their Volleyball unit. Although it may look different, students are still learning their bumping, setting, and serving techniques by trying different drills with their own ball. Even though stu- dents cannot share the same ball, they are approaching this very popular game with a good attitude. Students have even started using IPad’s to watch themselves perform different techniques and then analyze what they did right and what they can improve on. Students are looking forward to showing off their skills by playing a real volleyball game when it is deemed safe. Students in K-2 has continued to practice their basic movement skills (running, skipping, galloping, hoping, jumping) by trying many different evading games (i.e., tag games, obstacle courses). Students continue to do a great job giving each other space, tagging with the noodle (not our hands), and learning different strategies. All extra-curricular activities will remain on hold while schools are in level orange. Buses & Transportation Bus cancellation During the school year there may be times when school bus transportation is cancelled due to inclement weather or poor driving conditions, but schools will remain open. School bus transportation for all school divisions in the City of Winnipeg is cancelled when the wind chill reaches -45° C by 6:15 a.m. based on the Environment Canada readings in Winnipeg. When bus transportation is cancelled in the morning, it will not resume later in the day even if weather conditions improve. All major Winnipeg media outlets are contacted in the early morning and are asked that they broadcast and/or post bus cancellation information. Severe Weather Conditions Severe weather conditions and poor roads may extend the running time of some buses, resulting in late arrival and departure. Parents/guardians should make sure that children are suitably clothed until picked up and that they have a place to go in the event the bus does not arrive.
