North Suburban Pond & Garden Walk August 1 & 2, 2020 Hours: 10 AM - 6 PM (except where noted) Welcome to the 2020 North Suburban Pond & Garden Walk; a self-guided walk open to all. You can visit the yards in any order you want, just note which yards are open one day only. If you have visited our yards before, we look forward to seeing you, your family, and friends again. Most walks require a fee to acquire a list of yards. We want our walk to be free, but will accept donations at any of the locations so we can continue to provide this walk and share our love of gardening with you and others. Please bring masks and use in accordance with each home owner’s request. E-mail us via the website or comment on Facebook and let us know how you enjoyed the walk and send some of your favorite pictures too! The yard is going through a transition since some trees have died and affected my shade garden. There are wildflowers, perennials, roses, annuals, veggies, a small raspberry patch, 3 ponds, and an arbor with a deck. The largest pond, 6000-gallons, was built for turtles, some which I’ve had since a kid. Most of the various species of turtles are “rescued” unwanted pets. There’s also a frog pond which is loaded with plants where much is “harvested” as food for the turtles. Gump, a rescued tortoise, is the boss of the yard. He has forced me to do a lot of gardening in pots since he can eat an entire flower bed in a matter of minutes. Check out how big Gump is now, possibly feed him, or you can hold a smaller aquatic or box turtle. No parking in driveway. Park on the gravel shoulder of Greenwood – best on west side, or on side streets 1/4 block north or south. Please respect other guests by keeping your distance and put your mask on if others are around. 2. 2822 Covert Road, Glenview Ann & George Some people collect antiques, some people collect dolls, I am a collector of flowers. By adding a pond to our backyard in 2014, I was able to add to my collection. My style is neat and tidy, but sometimes one just has to roll with it. So drop by and check out my obsession, there’s always something new to see. Open Saturday 10 AM – 6 PM, Sunday 12 PM – 4 PM Please socially distance and put your mask on if others are around. 3. 8201 Norma Court, Niles Vicki & Bert We invite you to visit our beautiful backyard oasis. Our pond is home to some friendly koi and comets always ready to be hand fed as well as frog residents. Our retreat also includes a gnome/fairy garden and an abundance of whimsical yard art guaranteed to catch your attention. We know you will feel refreshed from the sights and sounds of cascading water! Due to Covid, we ask that all visitors wear masks upon entering as well as keep social distance. 4. 2748 Norwood Terrace, Glenview Bob & Marsha We have an 8000 gallon pond with a waterfall. A 2000 gallon collection pond drains into the larger main pond. Ponds have an elaborate filtration system in a nearby shed. Wooded and floral landscaping. We may or may not be present, so just walk in the gate next to the garage and enjoy the view. Face covering recommended. Since then we have taken our interest in gardening and the outdoors to the next level we have incorporated ornamental trees from near and far including Colorado, Indiana, and Ohio. Hosta islands, butterfly flowers, raspberry and blackberry bushes, tomato plant island and much, much more. A few years ago we added six rain barrels and two water pits we use to maintain the garden. This past year we installed solar panels that we use to power the house and charge our Tesla model X. Our newest and most exciting addition to the house is John’s Beehive. North Suburban Page 3 Pond & Garden Walk 10. 8101 Keeler Avenue, Skokie John & Harriet This is the first year for our 18” raised metal beds in the front vegetable garden. The plants clearly like the raised beds because they are crazy big, with cucumber, bean, pumpkin, and zucchini vines climbing up and over the arbor. The arbor is 7 feet high & 8 feet long. It is made from 2 curved cattle fencing panels. We saw this in a magazine. The garden also has tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, radishes, carrots, & cabbage. The back yard has a nice sized pond with a substantial stone waterfall, water lilies, cattails and other plants, plus 40-50 goldfish Various flower beds showcase tall phlox, cone flowers & much more. Enter through the gate next to the driveway. All visitors must wear masks and practice social distancing at all times. Only one family group allowed near the pond at a time. 11. 838 Leyden Lane, Wilmette Patti & Sheldon Our garden has a bit of everything – veggie garden, pond, perennials, pollinators, annuals, and several sitting areas. We have a rain garden & rain barrels. Mostly native plants. Saturday 10 AM – 4 PM, Sunday 12 PM – 4 PM Park on west side of street. We have set up a one-way route for distancing. 12. 1615 Mount Pleasant Street, Northfield Jean Many perennials! A pond that is in an enclosed space surrounded by a fence of vines. My yard has three garden areas, also a fairy garden on my parkway. A Botanic Oasis, with lots of diverse planting over the last FIFTY SIX YEARS‼ Bird houses, water fountains and a pond with a little waterfall. Love to see you in my garden to relax and leave all the stress behind you. Open Saturday only 16. 1324 N. Peachtree Lane, Mount Prospect Gail I welcome you to my yard. It has been a work in progress for 23 years. I have a variety of hostas, a wild milkweed area, a majestic carving of an eagle on its nest and a pond that my husband and I did ourselves. Open Saturday only Enter the yard on the south side of the house, the side the garage is on. “Beware of dog” sign is on the gate but the dogs will be in the house. No Covid precautions necessary. 17. 106 Elm Street, Prospect Heights Rob & Colleen We are five years into our great gardening adventure and spend many hours trimming and pruning the 50+ unique conifer trees that decorate our backyard living space. Our “rustic mountain oasis” contains multiple waterfalls, and a 5,000 gallon pond “eco-system” that harvests and recirculates rain water. The crushed stone fire pit area leads to second waterfall and walking trail area. This year, we added a few wooden bridges so that adventurers can walk the entire yard without having to “hop over” a stream or ravine. At the back of the yard, we’ve installed a special “native” feature that is truly unique. Open Sunday only, 10AM – 5PM Please come prepared with a mask or face covering and follow recommended social distancing protocols.
