April 2021 Awarded Best CLC Regional Newsletter 2007, 2020 PATE SWAP MEET 2021 Story and Photos by Lifer Its that time of year again when the sixteen car clubs that comprise the Pate Swap Meet Associa- tion gather in late April to put on the largest swap meet in the Midwestern United States, and possi- bly the second largest in the country. This is the 50th year of this annual event, and the North Tex- as Region of the Cadillac & LaSalle Club is a major player. This three-day event, which took many months of hard work by members of the member car clubs, has everything in the way of automo- biles, motorcycles, and most anything transportation related, including parts of all kinds, accesso- ries, automobilia, street rods, hot rods, antiques, classics, and loads of hard-to-find vintage items. Our NTX mission is very important, as we are responsible to lay on the ground in seven zones, a special tile marker for each vendor space so the vendors who paid for their space can locate it. This year we are again using a heavier tile marker that has a vinyl sticker overlaid on a rubber marker tile. There are approximately 9,071 or more tiles, each hand-prepared by members of four car clubs, and hand-laid in the proper position on the Texas Motor Speedway east parking lot on the Saturday before the week of the swap meet. On the last Sunday of the swap meet all tiles are re- covered, sorted, missing tiles noted, and then stored for the next year’s swap meet. Why do we do it? Because we are part of a large active organization that has the same interests we do. It’s hard work, and it’s fun. The fun part comes on the swap meet days when we see old friends and greet new ones who come by our white hospitality tent, when we sign up new members, and when we show off some of our Cadillacs on display in front of our tent. If you want to display your Cadillac in front of the hospitality tent, you will need a special vendor windshield sticker to get to the tent. You must arrive before 10:00 a.m. and cannot leave until after 5:00 p.m. Pate Swap Meet rules. I also have worker passes for free parking if you want to work the hospitality tent on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Let me know. April 2021 President’s Message It’s been a year into the Covid-19 pandemic and I have been un-celebrating the lockdowns and cancelations we all have had to endure. But now it’s a new year with vaccinations, easing of restrictions, less sickness, and lots of possible activities. For the members of the North Texas Region, we can soon start having First Saturday Breakfast Socials in a real restaurant. And the Pate Swap meet is officially on, meaning possibly recruiting some new members, a bit of hard work, and some money for our treasury. Of course, the Cadil- lac LaSalle Club’s Grand National in Albuquerque has been rescheduled for 2023, a dis- appointment for many Cadillac people, but then there is Chicago in 2022 to look forward to. Being central in the United States, it should draw a lot of members and cars, and have some super events, not forgetting the great food there. The Pate Swap Meet is held on the west parking lot of the Texas Motor Speedway, north of Ft. Worth, Texas. However, because of the available space there, Denton County set up the best Covid-19 vaccination site that there is in the U.S, vaccinating close to 12,000 dos- es every day, and processing recipients in under half an hour, So, after much discussion and hooting and hollering, it was decided to leave Denton’s site up during our swap meet and for Pate to move to the east parking lots (see page 5 and 5a for an image of the east side). It also has the advantage of being able to handle additional vendors (we are close to a sell-out year), but being new to us, it will be a challenge. Here is what it will take to meet the challenge; technology. The Pate Swap Meet has en- tered into the 21st century and we look good. Now vendors can select and buy spaces on the internet, the big-old-magazine called the Pate Times is electronic and on the internet, and with a smart phone or an tablet computer-type computer with GPS capability, a ven- dor can be located quickly, parts haulers can operate more efficiently, and one can locate themselves on the site. This will help immensely on Setup Day for us. Google pateswap- meet.com and check out the way-updated web site. You will be impressed. Search us Pate Times> All Listings > Search Pate Times Directory Cadillac press enter. We are the sec- ond listing on the right “North Texas Region Cadillac & LaSalle Club Hospitality tent.” For our club we have new hospitality tent banners and table covers thanks to the hard work of our Southwester Region Vice President Tim Coy and the CLC. Our hospitality tent is a place where we can recruit possible new members, visit with current members, pass out club media, and offer a place to rest and have a cold drink. So, I will see y’all at Pate. Our first event is the Tile Refurbish Party (see page 3) on April 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at the Conex in Zone Zero (west side). Then Setup day on April 17 th. April 2021 PATE SWAP MEET TILE REFERBISH PARTY APRIL 3, 2021 (April 10, rain date.) We will meet at 10:00 a.m. on April 3rd at the Conex in Zone Zero. The Tile Refurbish Party’s purpose is to inspect each vendor’s space-marking tile and each tile tub. Each of the tubs has a laminated map of the zone and the blocks assigned for that tub. We place the tiles in the correct tub, in numerical order by blocks (even numbers in one stack and odd numbers in s second stack). Each stack gets a big rubber band to secure it. Missing tiles or unreadable tiles are replaced, using the vi- nyl film from the roll to make the replacement tile. There are over 9,000 tiles, but the work goes fast and we have fun with the get-together of club members. Refreshments will be provided, along with required supplies. However, please dress appropriately for the weather to be comfortable as we will be outside, and BRING A CHAIR. We need as many of you to come as possible, so mark the date and come on out. Remember, the mem- ber count, besides meaning a more fun and in- teresting A Vendor Space-Marking Tile A tile tub with tiles sorted Tubs in the shelving in and ready for placement Zone Zero PATE Conex April 17th Setup Day See PateSwapMeet.com for lots of info Coming from I35W frontage road (Victory Circle) or Route 114, Go north on Allison Ave, left on Lone Star Circle and left into Zone Zero where the two yellow Conex's are located. April 2021 Pate Swap Meet Team Instructions April 17: On Setup Day the meeting time is 10:00 a.m. meeting at the race track (car show on the map below) located at the corner or Earnhardt Ave and Lone Star Circle. From there we pick up the golf carts and drive them over to Zone 0 where the vendor space mark- er tile tubs and street signs and poles are stored in the PATE Conex . There will be refresh- ments and water on hand. Tiles: Each golf cart is loaded with the tile tubs for the zone that is being worked. Note that each cart should have a walkie-talkie, water, and any other refreshments the cart occupant’s desire. After laying the tiles, the tubs along with maps and walky-talkies are returned to the Conex. The golf carts are then returned to the infield of the track before leaving. Lunch should be served around 12:00 noon at the Conex, so if you are in the middle of your work, drive on in, and then after lunch, complete your mission. Keys: Leave cart keys in the carts. They will be collected when we are done. April 25 On Teardown Day we meet at 10:00 a.m.at the Cadillac LaSalle Club Hospitali- ty Tent in Zone 1a-Block 30 (the green markers on the map below). The swap meet will be winding down, so driving your car to the tent should not be a problem. Golf carts will be provided for the activity. Each cart will load up with zone-specific tubs, maps, walky-talkies, water, and refreshments as desired for tile pickup. After the tiles are retrieved, the tile tubs, sign materials, and walky-talkies are taken to the Conex in west Zone 0 for sorting and storage. Lunch should be served around 12:00 noon at the Conex, so if you are in the middle of your work, drive on in, and then after lunch, finish the pickup. Before you leave, the empty golf carts will be dropped off at the HQ trailer. Leave the keys in the carts. On each day be sure to sign the attendance roster on the clip board with your name and club. Below the red line (Earnhardt Ave) is hard stand, and to the right is gravel and grass areas. At the corner of Lone Star Circle and Earnhardt is a fenced in track, where we will park our golf cards and will meet on setup day. Marked as Car Show on map. You will be able to use your smart cell phone or tablet computer with GPS capability to see where you are standing and where ven- dors are located. This is new, but it works well. April 2021 HOW TO SAVE A CADILLAC STORE FACING COLLAPSE Story and Photos Alex Beloff III Without a good used car operation, you will never have a good new car operation. Disposing of used cars at a profit is critical to the survival of the entire dealership. “Customers and profit” and plenty of both because with a customer, “you’re out of business”. Today, it is hard to imagine conditions almost 40 years ago. The Opec fuel crisis had cars lined up around the block for 10 gallons. Big cars looked like the Exxon Valdez tanker. Communities were highly competitive. In horribly depressed economies, car dealers operated in marginal poorly located facilities in brutal weather conditions. You get two feet of snow on the ground, you’re out of business. The margin for error in a cash hungry dealership is “zero”. Clifford C. Wagner was my career mentor and true friend. He survived as a B-17 flight engineer overseas. He was Cadillac Motor Car Division National Service Director. He cured many vehicle ills including early vapor locking. An accomplished multi engine instrument rated pilot with a federal arms license, Cliff was an American patriot, devout family man, brilliant and compassionate. He was very respected by numerous luminaries and legendries. He would say, “Never be ashamed of success. The only bargains in true luxury were misrepresented.” He was also a lot of fun. The only green color Cliff liked was on Bob Myles new Ca- dillac (a nine time nationally recognized top Mutual of Omaha Rich- mond man). Retired from Cadillac, Cliff was signed as the Cadillac dealer in Rich- mond, Indiana. A really great town of I-70 on the Indiana Ohio bor- der. Cliff contacted me and I said, “How can I help? He replied, “We are the only small town Cadillac dealer not dualled up with another GM sister division. In Peru, you had Beloff Pontiac Cadillac and earned GMC. We are Cadillac. If we don’t sell, we are finished. We sell 6 to 8 used cars a month on a consignment lot two blocks away. We miss many good Cadillac local trades. Our potential customers drive to Indianapolis, Dayton, Cincinnati or Florida for their new Ca- dillacs. Our nice trades end up on local abandoned service station car lots where they went to the fountain of youth (ran the miles back). They smear the dirt around on Cadillacs and falsely represent them. ‘Al’, I need you to come down here and be my used car manager and right hand man. I said, “I know nothing about being a used car man- ager.” Cliff responded, “You are a master Cadillac dealer and a salesman like Patton was a tank soldier. I can teach you the rest. You and I go back to Indianapolis Tutwiler Cadillac days. Cadillac is counting on us.” I said, “Cliff, It is hard to say no the way you put it.” Page 6
April 2021 We got rid of the weak and stupid. I got all the records of past used car customers. I sent an apologetic letter for lack of contact. My photo in front of a Cadillac was on the letter head. I extended every courtesy and was anxious to correct any hurt feelings. I of- fered accommodations and to see me personally. I followed up with a personal phone call. I reversed the customer mutiny and our sales increased. Cliff said, “Every trade-in appraiser, used car manager tries to steal the nice cars and put too much in the junk! It is the reverse. Al, put more in the nice cars and steal the junk. They know they got junk. If a clunker is worth $2500, then put $25 in it. I would tell my client, You have no dispute with us. It has served you well. Sell it yourself for what ever you think you should have.” One wife said, no more gro- cery money in that wreck. Trade it. Our Cadillac reconditioning produced “show car” quality Cadillacs never before seen. The factory magic mirror lacquer glowed like a $20,000 custom finish. All Cadillac script and emblems were new sparkling against polished painted surfaces. The traditional ugly caked polish build up was gone. All tires were new and correct size Cadillac white walls. Nothing screams cheap like skinny white walls. The interior smelled new and looked as if no one ever sat in the car. It was complete with all new factory floor mats, pedals, ash trays, lighters, trunk mat topped off with the in demand Cadillac stand-up hood wreath and crest ornament. Open the pristine engine compartment and appreciate a new under hood pad with no nasty oil, dirt or dust to annoy new owners. All qualified pre-owned Cadillacs had Cadillac national certification warranties. A huge plus for our customers. Cliff also taught me the value of a new battery. If you don’t have enough power to the secondary circuit of the ignition system, the car will never start properly especially in cold weather. Our vehicles started every time and worked perfectly including all courtesy lamps and fiber optics. After first washing the trade in car clean, we let it dry. Stripped of bright work, it gets a washing with tar remover. This eliminates swirl marks as the oil base road tar dis- solves buffer polishing leaving swirl marks. Of course, you wash off tar remover be- fore final buffing and polishing! No competitions could duplicate us. Anxious buyers style home in their show quality Cadillacs proud of their investment. My research revealed rear wheel drive Cadillacs have a 5 on 5 wheel bolt pattern which is especially true of 1971-1976. The gorgeous 15” chrome Buick Riviera wheel will bolt right up on our pre-owned Cadillacs. Through our parts department at dealer price, we ordered new chrome Buick Riv wheels with a Cadillac crest mount- ed on the center caps. Grinding the rear fender skirts slightly cured clearance problems. Our Coupe DeVilles with Riv wheels and correct white walls had buyers waiting with deposits before the tires were cold. Page 7
April 2021 Whiskey cars: One of my customers said, “Hey Al. I need a whiskey car. I drive it to local bars where I get parking lot damage. Sometimes I take a cab home and can’t remember where I left my car.” Since I hate wholesalers who insultingly try to steal good trade ins. I got mad and convinced Cliff to let me take the $25 trade ins, ran them through the same safety and reconditioning treatments and wholesale them to the public. A big sign read: Whiskey cars, first time drivers, go to work cars. Reliable. Sold as is. $395 to $695. Bring a leash and drag these dogs home. Anxious buyers always cleaned me out. A 1969 Pontiac buyer had an engine failure because the last owner disconnected the low oil sensing dash light wire. We missed it. Cliff put in a rebuilt engine “no charge”. The word spread all over town. Cliff’s strictest rule is that we will have no preowned vehicles on the lot for sale longer than 30 days. No matter how nice, 30 days and it goes to auction or wholesale to the public. Cars are not like fine wine that do not improve with age. In three years averaging 20 to 25 units a month including special interest imports and exotics, our new Cadillac sales shot up dramatically. We never missed a new Cadillac deal because of trade in value. Back then we did not floor plan used cars. That is your money sitting out there in those trades. Cliff sent me out to Hagerstown, Wayne County, Indiana, to pick up a gorgeous 1970 Cadillac for servic- ing. The owner’s wife said, “Al, go down in the basement. Ralph has the keys and wants to meet you.” As I went down the stairs, I could hear laths and machines running. I said, “Ralph, it’s dark down here.” He said, “Oh, sorry.” He turned the lights on. Of course, it was the legendary Ralph R. Teetor who was blind since youth and had a highly refined sense of touch. He became President of Perfect Circle in 1946. It was the most amazing experience of my life to meet Ralph. He is enshrined in the Automotive Hall of Fame. Well, how did we do? The Cadillac Motor Car Division Cincinnati zone awarded us with the best Cadillac pre-owned dealer three years running. We had the highest re- conditioning expenses, the highest profit margin per unit, no units over 30 days in three years and zero customer complaints. No J D Powers back then. Honda by passed every dealer in Richmond to sign Wagner as a dealer because the weakest link to most import new car dealers was very weak used car departments. Every evening when Cliff closed up the new car department, he walked down the two blocks for our daily sales meeting. We had big double dipped ice cream cones at the landmark sweet shop. Cliff Wagner has influenced my career, my life and my view points. He is missed and forever lives in my memory. May God bless the trails you ride. Alex Page 8
April 2021 Memorable Cadillacs T Pic taken a few years ago at our Vintage Aircraft museum. The biplane behind lady Victoria is a 1931Fleet bush plane. Summitted by Lorne Scott, president of Cadillac LaSalle Club of Canada There are a few LaSalle Coupes in Texas but as far as I know, there aren't any 1928 LaSalle 4 Passenger Victorias. There were 405 of them made in 1927/28 and as far as I can find, there are about three units left of that production. Lady Victoria is an original , well maintained 93 year old sample. There was another in the Self Starter Directory some years ago but only for one year and when I tried to contact them, there was no an- swer. I advertised one that was -parts car - condition a few months ago and it was sold to the upper Eastern US and no- one can find it now. After owning it for 24 years, this one is very "Memorable" to me but there may be other folks out there that have memories of them as well that need to be stirred up. . Page 9
