Carers Connected - April 2020 Page 3 GUIDANCE FOR CARERS Latest Government Advice is that if you have a new persistent cough or high temperature you should stay away from others and self isolate for a period of 14 days. This now applies to family members who should also self isolate for 14 days, the NHS provides information on how to self isolate on their website. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-advice/ If your loved one is in an at-risk groups please follow government advise and “largely shield them from social contact” for 12 weeks. As before if you are worried that you or someone you care for may be at risk we recommend you call NHS 111 who will offer guidance. Please let them know you are a carer. A dedicated online service has also be setup to help you find out what to do if you think you are at risk. https://111.nhs.uk/covid-19 If you or somebody you have been in contact with have travelled to one of the areas listed on the NHS website in the past 14 days it is important you contact this helpline and follow the advice given. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/ Prepare Yourself If you are worried you may not be able to carry out your caring role in the future think about a contingency plan. This can be as simple as talking to trusted neighbours, friends or family to make arrangements for them to cover should you become unwell. Let them know your daily routine, how you will let them know if you are sick and importantly let your loved one know who may be caring for them. Carers UK offer detailed advice on creating a contingency plan. If you have an emergency plan in place with Suffolk County Council, you will have a key fob similar to the photo. More information on organising a carers’ emergency plan can be found Suffolk County Councils Website. https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/care-and-support-for-adults/caring-for-some- one/family-carers-emergency-plan/ Do I need to stay away from others? Carers Connected - April 2020 Page 4 CARERS CHAMPION TRAINING This is the first person in the Ipswich & East Suffolk area that has completed our Carers Champion training. Her name is Laura Langford and she works as a Health Care Assistant at The Birches Medical Centre in Kesgrave. The practice is also the first Carer Friendly Surgery in the area. CARER FRIENDLY SURGERY - BILDESTON HEALTH CENTRE Bildeston Health Centre are now a Carer Friendly Surgery and Carer Friendly Dispensary. Susan Doggett, Carer Lead Champion said: “I have worked very closely with SFC, and GP Services, Family Carer Adviser, and feel I have gained knowledge and confidence in becoming Bildeston’s Health Centre Carers Lead Champion. This has helped me connect with carers who visit the Surgery and who want to access support in their caring role both from the Surgery and from SFC”. “We are thankful to receive our Certificates and’ Carer Friendly Surgery’ and ‘Carer Friendly Dispensary’ status”. Louise Bissett, Practice Manager & Carer Champion said: “We have worked closely with SFC for several years, running our Carers Group together. We have always had a Carers Lead within the Practice – a friendly face, voice on the end of the phone that family Carers can talk to, get advice or be signposted to other services. The Carers Lead also acts as a liaison with the GP’s. Our Carers Lead Champion keeps our carers register and Practice Carers noticeboard up to date. Of late we have been working with SFC to become a ‘Carer Friendly Surgery’ and Carer Friendly Dispensary’, with a number of staff now becoming Carer Champions. Our CQC reports have always reflected how hard we work with family carers, receiving an ‘Outstanding’ in our very first CQC inspection”. “Becoming a ‘Carer Friendly Surgery’ and ‘Carer Friendly Dispensary’ will mean our staff will be upskilled and our family carers will receive the help and support they thoroughly deserve”.
Carers Connected - April 2020 Page 5 CONNECTED COMMUNITIES TEAM First Connected Communities team meeting took place. Suffolk Family Carers will work alongside community officers from both East Suffolk and Suffolk County Council, with support from; Access Community Trust, The Shaw Trust and Age UK Suffolk. “Connected Communities” will be giving anyone aged 65 and over, living in the rural parts of the Waveney and the rural areas around Framlingham, Wickham Market and Woodbridge the opportunity to improve their health and wellbeing, connect with their local community, and to focus on building on their personal priorities and interests. STUDENTS SET FOR ‘INSPIRATIONAL SPEECH’ FROM CEO, KIRSTEN Our inspirational CEO, Kirsten Alderson, was the keynote speaker at a spe- cial event designed to inspire the region’s female pupils that took place on Wednesday 11th March. Kirsten gave an opening address at the ‘Liberate and Educate: Inspirational Women’ day, which was being staged at the University of Suffolk. Some 120 year 10 pupils from across Suffolk attended, taking part in a variety of workshops focused on opportunities and career pathways. Speaking about her selection as the keynote speaker, Kirsten said: “I was really delighted to be asked to contribute to this special event. “It’s really important that young women across the county go through their school lives knowing the wealth of opportu- nities which are available to them, and that they hear from a variety of other females about experiences in the work- place – both good and bad. “I have been extremely fortunate throughout my career to work with some wonderfully inspirational women, and I hope I’ll be able to pass on some valuable insight.” BLAKE’S CHOCS FOR CHAMPS UP- DATE We caught up with Blake, our young carer behind the ‘Chocs For Champs’ campaign. Blake has already launched his Easter 2020 campaign and we realised it was exactly 1 year since he launched ‘Chocs For Champs’ for the first time, who knew so much could happen in a year! This Easter we are supporting Blake to make his national dreams for ‘Chocs for Champs’ a reality. Easter eggs will be extending beyond Suffolk, reaching more young carers than ever, reminding them that they have support and are not alone. If you would like to support Blake’s campaign please check out his facebook and just giving pages or drop an Easter egg off at one of the collection points in the Sudbury/Long Melford area. Read about Blake’s amazing journey https://suffolkfamilycarers.org/blakes-2019-journey-towards-chocs-for-champs-2/
Carers Connected - April 2020 Page 6 ‘I AM’ – MILDENHALL COLLEGE ACADEMY Mildenhall College Academy is the first school in West Suffolk to achieve Platinum in our Schools Award, which has recently been reviewed. On Mon- day 27th Jan the school completed their CPD training with 18 staff mem- bers attending. We celebrated Young Carers awareness week by ending with an assembly and a special visit from our motorhome! As it was international hot chocolate day on Friday 31st Jan we thought it would be a good excuse to treat young carers to hot chocs and treats on the motorhome. Over 20 young carers enjoyed completing our ‘ I AM’ quiz with almost 80% of young carers guessing the support and facts about young carers correctly. This proved that the awareness raising in the school mirrors the level of award the staff at MCA have worked hard for. Non regis- tered students were offered ‘I AM’ stickers and keyrings encouraging them to write a positive thing about themselves. This proved difficult to most, with some teenagers having to ask their peers to identify a positive thing about them- selves. Advisers encouraged the students to think more positively of themselves and offered mood jars, tips and tricks to encourage a healthy relationship with their wellbeing. It was fantastic to see so many young carers old and new coming along for a treat on the motorhome – keep an eye out on the school’s noticeboard regarding the outcome of feedback… We would like to say a special thank-you to Mrs H McMullan – who continues to support the students as Young Carers Lead even with a twisted ankle! Mrs F Miranda – who mentors the young carers on a weekly basis to those with an identified need. Mrs K Goff – who administrates young carer appointments (and is an expert kettle boiler for our hot chocs!) BEING A YOUNG LEADER FOR YOUNG CARERS The Young Leaders programme has been running since last summer and has been a great success. The young people, or G.O.A.T (Guidance, Organised, Approachable, Trustworthy), as they like to be known as, have attended a variety of clubs and activities to help give that ‘peer’ element to the guidance and support we provide. To be honest they can say it better, so let’s hear from 2 of them: What does being a young leader mean to me? In my opinion being a young leader to me is a great experience for working with children and helping them to know that it isn’t just about caring for someone it can also be fun and exciting. Being a young leader has brought me to understand how younger children can be affected with the responsibility of caring for their parents or siblings, it has also helped me to gain confidence talking and helping other people. I love do- ing this even if it’s once a month it can be really fun and I always look forward to coming. It’s the highlight of the month and I am truly great full for the opportunity is been given to be a young leader. “It’s a great experience to not only help but enjoy having fun with the younger children” – Keeley “It’s not just about helping the younger children move up to the 13+ group, its also having an impact on younger lives” – Emily PROJECT SEVEN DONATION Project Seven is a charitable organisation set up in 1982 which has the aim of simply helping as many local charities and organisations as possible. Project Seven is staffed and run by volunteers who raise money during the year from BBQs, Tea, Coffee, general refreshments, cabaret and event management. Their main event is the Big Night out in November held each year in Melford Hall Park. At the end of year, they give the money away at their Annual Presentation evening. This year, we were one of 55 different organisations invited to receive a donation. They donated a very generous £350 for which we are extremely grateful and would like to say a huge thank you for helping us to continue to provide our support to family carers in Suffolk.

Carers Connected - April 2020 Page 12 The Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney By Ashtons Legal When you consider preparing a Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney, you may also wish to consider preparing a Health and Welfare Power of Attorney. This type of Power of Attorney was not available to make previously, and these type of powers have only been in effect since 2007 when Lasting Powers of Attorney replaced Enduring Powers of Attorney. What authority does the Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney give? A Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney can extend to all or specified matters concerning the donor’s health and welfare, such as giving or refusing consent to medical treatment, arranging social care and support, and can give authority to the Attorneys to decide where the donor lives. Your Attorney cannot sell or buy property on your behalf unless they are also your Property and Financial Affairs Attorney. Unlike a Property and Affairs LPA, the attorneys appointed by a Health and Welfare LPA are only able to act if you are not able to make decisions on these issues yourself. How many Attorneys can I appoint? The Health and Welfare LPA enables you to appoint one or more attorneys to make decisions about your medical care and welfare generally. You are able to appoint up to four Attorneys, and four replacement Attorneys if you wish. Life-sustaining treatment One of the most important issues to consider when appointing your Attorneys is whether you give your Attorney the authority to give or refuse consent to life-sustaining treatment. If you decide to give your Attorneys the authority to give or refuse consent to life-sustaining treatment, you will need to sign Option A. If you have prepared a previous Advance Decision, this Advance Decision will not be valid if the Donor has subsequently made a Health and Welfare LPA conferring authority to make decisions concerning the same treatment covered by the Advance Decision.
Carers Connected - April 2020 Page 13 If you do not wish to give your Attorneys that authority, you will sign Option B. You may not wish to give your Attorneys that authority as you may have strong views on life-sustaining treatment, and therefore you may wish to prepare an Advance Decision, which reflects your wishes. The medical practitioner in your care will then be required to follow your decision. The Attorney under a Health and Welfare LPA does not have the authority to authorise euthanasia or assist in the donor’s suicide, which remains a criminal offence. Capacity A donor must have capacity to prepare an LPA and the statutory test is set out in the Mental Capacity Act 2005. What is mental capacity? ‘Mental capacity’ is the ability to make a specific decision at the time that it needs to be made. A lack of mental capacity is when a mind or brain problem stops a person making a specific decision when they need to. Please visit our website for updates. New opportunity to make contact with us We are delighted to report that the success of the partnership working in West Suffolk GP surgeries is already being mirrored in Ipswich & East Suffolk practices. Our advisers are available on a monthly basis at an increasing list of practices, for you to chat to, ask questions of, or discuss issues that you may have. We are usually available in the waiting room and are easily identified by our Suffolk Family Carers banner, clothing and ID badges. If you feel that a longer, private conversation would be beneficial, then a one-to-one appointment can be made at your preferred venue (usually at the surgery or at home). Anyone at the practice can refer into our service as long as they have your permission, or you can self-refer by using our Info Line (01473 835477). After that, our dedicated Administrator will make contact with you to discuss how you would like to proceed. A one-to-one appointment typically lasts about 1½ hours, but the timing is driven by you and your availability. One of our accredited Health Coaches will listen to your situation and any issues that you face, and from that will work with you to develop a plan of action designed to help make your caring role more sustainable. The help offered can take many forms, but often involves making referrals to other support organisations, to Social Services, to programmes and workshops run by Suffolk Family Carers and of course we will make onward referrals to other parts of our charity, such as the Young People’s services, Hospital or Mental Health services. We will also discuss local financial, social, emotional or health-related activities or support that we have identified may be of benefit to you. No actions are taken unless you agree to them, so you have control over where referrals are made and who knows about them. An email or letter outlining any agreed actions/referrals taken or made can be sent if required, so you have a handy list of who may be in touch with you, together with a ‘to do’ list that you can work through as and when you feel able. Part of our partnership working involves sending a summary of the meeting to your GP, so that he/she knows what happened as a consequence of our meeting.
