Parks & Recreation Summer ROCKS Program Recreation Opportunities for Creative Kids in the Summer An ACTIVE Program for ACTIVE Kids! ROCKS Program Info The Fridley Recreation Department will once again host this popular summer program. Summer ROCKS (Recreation Opportunities for Creative Kids in the Summer) is all about exploring, adventure, learning, creativity, friendships, and most of all FUN! The pro- gram will be held at the Fridley Middle School (FMS) and Commons Park. Drop-off and pick-up will be located at Door #10 on the West side of the FMS. Throughout this packet you’ll find the program schedule, registration info and weekly activity descriptions. ROCKS Daily Schedule (M, Tu, Th, F) Register Online! FridleyMN.gov/Summer-ROCKS 7:30 - 8:20 a.m. Arrival & Hang-out During this time participants can play games, read a book, watch a cartoon or work on an art project with the ROCKS staff. 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Morning Instructional Classes Frequently Asked Questions... Participants will enjoy 3 different classes ranging from sports/games, arts/crafts, science/nature and enrichment. 1. Do I have to register for the entire 10 week program? ROCKS Weekly Classes and Trips/Special Events In the morning each week, participants will take part in three different classes. Classes take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; field trips and special events take place on Wednesdays. Activities have been selected to appeal to a wide array of inter- ests and abilities. We are excited to offer many new things for your child to learn as well as present some traditional favorites to fill the days with excitement and fun! Week 1 June 14 - 17 Games Galore Get ready for an awesome time! We’ll play a wide variety of team building games as well as some of the classics like Pin Guard, Trench Ball, Sharks & Minnows, and Ball Tag. This active class will be a great place to get to know new friends! Clay and Sculpture Come play with clay! You’ll learn building and shaping techniques using a variety of clay. In addition, we’ll paint and decorate our creations and creatures too. Recycling Challenge We’ll explore the world of recycling and learn what we can do to keep our world clean and beautiful. We’ll learn through games, scavenger hunts, obstacle courses and cool projects. Get ready Week 3 June 27 - July 1 to challenge yourself and your friends to be an ambassador for the earth. Soccer The “goal” of this class is to get the kids moving and learning the Wednesday game of soccer. Week 4 July 6 - 8 Baseball/T-ball and Kickball Get ready to hit, kick, and throw in all of these classic summer sports. Bring your ball gloves as we head to the field for practice. We will focus on fun as we learn the fundamentals of these sports and work our way to game play. Bead and Tape Creations We will make a variety of projects using all types of beads and even make our own. We will also be using duct tape and masking tape to make cool art works and useful items! Join this class to explore Basketball the environment around you and express it in your artwork. This is a great introduction to the sport of basketball. Week 8 August 1 - 5 Newspaper Club Are you ready to become a reporter? This class will be an exciting opportunity to create a youth newspaper. We will dig up stories, take pictures and put it all together in print. Lacrosse Learn one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States! Lacrosse is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey. Team play and sportsmanship will be emphasized. Instruction will be provided by Sports Unlimited coaches. Slimy, Squishy, Sticky In this class we will not only explore a variety of dough, but we will make our own slime that may be sticky or squishy. Get ready to be grossed out! Special Event - Nickel Jamboree Come one, come all for carnival games, face painting, hayrides, and more! This annual carnival is always a kid favorite! Activities Week 10 August 15 - 19 are just 10 - 50 cents, so bring your change (all ROCKS participants will receive a $5 card for use during the event as well). Track and Field Make a run for it! We’ll try our hand at a number of track and Week 9 August 8 - 12 field events such as hurdling, throwing, jumping and more! The week will consist of fun obstacle courses and friendly competi- tions. Martial Arts and Light Sabers! Learn the basics of Martial Arts, while developing self-confidence Photography and Scrapbooking and discipline. The Jolly Pops are back for an exciting concert in Commons Park! We’ll enjoy the music and dancing in the morning and in the afternoon we’ll have exciting entertainment that is sure to impress.
