PRAYING ROUND THE PARISH In December we will be praying especially for all those who live in: East Parade, East Street, Ebeneezer Road, Edwin Road, Edgar Road, Exmouth Place, George Street, Githa Road, Glenview Close and Gloucester Cottages. In January 2021 we will be praying especially for all those who live in: Goodwin Road, Girth Road, Harold Road, Hastings Wall, Henry Terrace, High Street, Lavender House, Lodge Road, Marine Parade and Mount Road. As of Church of England & Bishop of Chichester guidelines, social distanc- ing will be strictly followed at all services in St Clements and All Saints churches: • Service books will be on pew seats so people know where to sit, and these should be left on the pews after each service. • The Priests will wear full facial shields for extra protection for our more vulnerable congregation & all of us. • At time of writing there will be no refreshments following the ser- vice & congregation are asked to leave church as soon as the ser- vice has finished. • Please provide your own face covering if possible. • You will be asked to use the hand sanitizer on entering & exiting the church. • The collection plate will be in position at back of the church, as the plate will not be brought around during the service. • There are now QR posters in both churches and church hall. These look like a huge bar code. If you have a mobile phone you can scan these Bar codes. These are Government posters that combine with the smart phone App to alert you if you have come into contact with someone who has the Corona virus. These are not mandatory, but another way of helping to keep us all as safe as possible. For latest information, please see the website, achurchnearyou or St Clements facebook page (details on page 4). St Clements continues to be open for private prayer every day from 11.30am to 1.30pm. 22 5
December 2020 Dear Friends, I’m writing this letter in mid- November in obedience to our editor’s copy date. Season Four of The Crown has begun on Netflix and highly successful trial results for a second vaccine for Covid-19 have just been announced. By the time you are reading this we may well have had further cheering news on this front. I don’t know about you, but I feel as though I’m looking expectantly to 2021 as the time when normali- ty returns to our lives. At pre- sent, I seem to be living in an in- between time, a time between the normality of life before last March and the hope of a better time to come. This edition of the Parish News will be published during Advent, an in- between time if ever there was one. Advent is not simply spiritual prepa- ration time for Christmas. It marks the time between the Fall of Adam DogStar Hub Dog Care and the coming of Christ in glory at the end of time. We can look back to • Solo / Elite walks a past state of perfect harmony between God and humanity and between • Group walks humanity and the natural world symbolised by our nakedness in the Gar- • Home visits for den of Eden, and we look forward to its restoration in the Kingdom of comfort and God. For now we live in a world marred by sin and in which human pride companionship still challenges God’s rule and threatens our natural environment. And so we wait. But we wait in confidence because Christmas marks the Incarnation, that extraordinary Christian belief that God has entered into human history at a specific time and in a specific place and in the specific person of Jesus of Nazareth. The drama of salvation thus begins as the Sec- ond Adam, to use St. Paul’s terminology, reverses the actions of the first Adam in the paradisal garden. The year that is passing has not been a good year for humanity. We can look forward to a better 2021 and for an increasing return to normality as the year progresses. I’ve even dared to book a visit to Leipzig in June to hear three operas by my beloved Wagner. But let us also lift up our eyes unto the hills whence cometh our help and look to that day when God’s Kingdom shall be fully restored “and the earth shall be full of the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.” I wish everyone a holy Advent, a blessed Christmas and a very happy New Year. Your friend and parish priest, Paul Hunt 20 7

He has also been a Priest in-Ordinary to the Queen, leading worship at the Chapel Royal and St. James Palace. K.S.P. Paul will be part-time, doing 2.5 days a week in the parish, so he won’t be able to do everything expected of a full-timer. He will work with the offic- ers and ministers who have led the parish during the vacancy, seeking to provide as full and rounded a ministry as possible, while living in his home in St. Leonards. One of Paul’s great interests is politics, and at the last General Election he was agent for the Liberal Democrats locally – but promises no party politics from the pulpit. Apart from his work as priest and chaplain, he has a wide range of other interests. When you meet him, ask him about opera, Arse- nal, and Graham Greene. You will get a response. Paul brings to his work here this wide experience of ministry in parishes and in education. The Old Town parish has not had its own priest-in-charge for over four years, and so Paul’s arrival means that we embark on a new chapter, full of hope, and Paul’s energy and flair will be available to us in his leadership role. But any revival in the life of the parish depends on all who care for the church here to play their part in bringing it new life. We wish Paul well in his work of helping and ínspiring us to shape and give direction to our future here. KSP 8 19
