WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER Parents & Family Welcome to the University of Rochester family! Just like your student, you too have joined a great community. The following pages contain the schedule of presentations for both days of the Parent & Family Orientation. While reviewing the schedule, you may notice that several sessions are offered at the same time. Sessions occurring simultaneously will be listed in the same programming block. Many sessions are offered twice daily, so please take a moment to plan your own schedule according to your interests using the “Plan Out Your Day” page. If you are unable to attend a session due to room capacity, volunteers (all wearing their famous yellow t-shirts) will be available to direct you to other presentations. You might also notice that there are two lunch sessions. We ask that you please adhere to the time assigned to you to help alleviate a rush for dining services. Refer to the campus map opposite this page as well as the dining hours chart on the final page of this program to select a dining location that best suits you. All dining options take cash and credit cards. At the conclusion of Orientation, you will be emailed a link to a survey; we would appreciate your feedback to help make this program better for years to come (Meliora!). Thank you for supporting your student, we are happy to have you here with us! WELCOME TO PARENT & FAMILY ORIENTATION My name is Dawn Bruner, Director of Parent and Family Relations. Parent and Family Relations works with parents to help them understand the student experience and support student learning and growth. It is our goal that as a member of the University of Rochester parent/family community you feel informed, valued, and respected. I am delighted to welcome you to the University of Rochester community. I encourage you to participate fully in Parent and Family Orientation. The Orientation team, along with many partners throughout the University, has planned a comprehensive program just for you. Use this time as an opportunity to make connections with the University and parents/families of other students. Parent and Family Orientation is designed to provide education, answer questions, and give you peace of mind. This may be the first time that some of you will experience leaving your student on campus. For others, you have done this once, twice, even three or more times before. Still, I am sure that many of you are filled with mixed emotions—excited for your student’s future, but perhaps anxious about what is next for them (and you.) You are not alone! Utilize the Orientation experience as an opportunity to learn from others and share your own wisdom. Family support is so very important to student success, and we thank you for partnering with us for your student’s success. I encourage you to allow your student to find his/her own way, beginning with New Student Orientation. There are many resources at the University of Rochester—trust that your student and your family has chosen well! We hope that you will encourage your students to use the available resources and let you know when they need help. Even then, as you give words of encouragement, you can still empower them to keep finding their own way and take charge of their college experience. I would like to offer you three tips: 1. Be sure to take plenty of business cards, as well as information about programs and services. These resources will assist you with having informed discussions with students later. 2. Remember, your relationship with the University does not stop at Orientation; be sure that you stay connected. Make certain that you are receiving Parents Buzz (e-newsletter), reading other University communications, and contacting us when needed. 3. Just breathe—you and your student will get through Orientation! Take pictures, celebrate this momentous occasion, and enjoy the experience! I look forward to meeting each of you and being one of many resources. Do not hesitate to contact me at dawn.bruner@rochester.edu or (585) 275-5415 if you have questions or concerns. Sincerely, indicates a required event for students Dawn Bruner, Ed.D. Director, Parent and Family Relations
