Papanews Community Edition Friday 14th June 2019 Newsletter Date Principal’s Perspective Kia Ora, This year is going incredibly fast. We are moving into winter, and next week, on Friday 21st June sees the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Our senior students are well into the academic year, and a number of them have started new semester courses recently, and we hope that transition has gone smoothly. Our senior students only have approximately eighty school days remaining until the end of their academic year, when they leave for their NCEA exams. Over the past few weeks, staff have been busily writing and preparing Junior academic reports. These reports will provide important feedback, progress, and next steps for your child’s learning. The Junior report evening will be held on Thursday 4th July. This night provides a formal opportunity for parents/caregivers of junior students to speak to subject teachers about their child’s progress. We look forward to seeing you there. Next week our school presents ‘Beauty and the Beast Jnr’ on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings starting at 7.00pm, with a matinee on Saturday at 2.00pm. Tickets are on sale at the student office, and door sales will be available at each performance. On Wednesday morning we said farewell to three long standing Board of Trustees members: Jerome Williamson (13 years), Sandy Brinsdon (11 years), and Deborah Callaghan (6 years), a morning tea was held which provided an opportunity to thank and acknowledge them on behalf of our staff, students, and community for their time, energy, and commitment they have shown to support the school. We wish them all the best with their future endeavours. PPTA INDUSTRIAL ACTION On Thursday the Michael Stevenson, the PPTA General Secretary advised that the rolling regional strikes planned for the week beginning Monday 17 June have been called off. Currently our Principal, Jeff Smith is in Wellington attending a meeting of the Secondary Principals’ Association of New Zealand (SPANZ), as he was recently elected onto this committee. We congratulate him on this appointment. Thank you for your ongoing support of Papanui High School. Mike Vannoort Associate Principal PPTA - INDUSTRIAL ACTION The Canterbury regional strike on Thursday 20th June has been called off. Students in all year levels are expected to attend school on Thursday 20th June.
Year 10 Term 2 has been an exceptionally busy term for our Year 10 cohort. It was wonderful to see so many of you coming in for Conference Day and supporting your children in setting and achieving academic goals for the year. In Week 3 we saw our students supporting Pink Shirt Day, promoting a very positive anti-bullying message of ‘Speak up, Stand together, and Stop bullying’. The school was truly a sea of pink. Endometriosis New Zealand also visited our school and spoke to the Year 10 girls around this health issue, educating them on the symptoms and realities of suffering from this condition. With 1 in 10 women in New Zealand having Endometriosis, it is certainly an important message to promote. Over twenty Year 10 students volunteered once again to show a large number of prospective pupils and their parents around the school for our Open Night. They were such great ambassadors for the school, promoting all that we have on offer, and answering any questions the public had. Without their help this event would not have run as smoothly. With winter also comes our annual Cross Country. This year the school ran things a little differently with a Wellness Walk, Fun Run, and a more competitive run being trialled for the first time. Congratulations to Kyle Beckwith and Keira McNaughton for taking out the competitive run event for Year 10. Last week four of our Year 10 French students attend a two hour cooking competition at Cashmere High School. This event was organised by the Alliance Francaise of Christchurch. Although the girls did not win, they made the school very proud with their organisation, cooking, and baking skills. Arbour Day was celebrated at Papanui High School by one of our Outdoor Education classes helping with weeding and planting at Papanui Bush. They braved the freezing temperatures to support our local environment and community. Lynette Starr Year 10 Dean
