Spring has sprung by Gretchen Schleyer Thank God, Daylight savings Eme is finally here so we can enjoy those lovely late aKernoons melding into lingering warm sunsets. Spring also brings many important religious celebraEons. I speak personally about Easter celebraEons and how to know they are coming. Watching a few hours of TV will make it clear. The Cadbury Bunny in many disguises comes out of his hutch to claim his place in the Easter baskets of the world. There is also the chocolate bunny approaching the peanut buBer jar with longing in his eyes and as they collide, chocolate covered peanut buBer eggs appear. There’s even been a cute blue bunny hopping about, that I want. Newspapers alert us to the coming of spring and Easter as we are bombarded with ads for delicate flower print dresses, paBerned shoes, pastel shirts, suits and the picture perfect “Family” modeling spring finery. Garden shops promote flower and vegetable planEngs for the broad expanses of color that will transform your property into the House BeauEful “Yard of the Year”. The deer will love it. In my long ago, spring and Easter brought the bright yellow of forsythias blooming by the front porch, and sunny yellow daffodils nodding their heads in the garden. Easter holiday demanded a brand new wardrobe from head to toe. My new mother took me to a fi:ng with her personal Irish seamstress for new dresses, followed by shopping at a downtown department store for new coats, shoes and of course an Easter Bonnet. These were proudly shown off at Church and at Easter parades. In Cleveland, there was an Easter parade, covered by the press that included the “Photo Gravures” of the local fashionistas. Years aKer her death, while helping to clean out the a:c, we found newspaper clippings with pictures of my mother in her newest Easter finery. She was a fashionista to the max. No maBer the weather, which in the North East from St. PaBy’s day through Easter meant cold winds, snow, rain and very few rays of sunshine, there were always Easter Egg Hunts. The day before the arrival of the Bunny and the celebraEon in Church, my Grandmother and I colored hard boiled eggs. The deep reds and pinks came from beets, soK browns and yellows from onion skins and the rest of the colors from the famous “Paas Pills” in vinegar water. What an eye opener for someone who had just learned what was inside the egg. Now there were eggs glowing in jewel colors. Searching for eggs in the back yard, with basket in hand was exciEng as every bright colored egg was discovered and carefully placed into a nest of green. Delicious deviled eggs served a few days later, were a bonus. Easter dinner was not ham, but a roasted leg of spring lamb with green mint jelly, buBery wide egg noodles and creamed sweet peas with pearl onions. This spring season I hope the celebraEons of your personal beliefs brings you and yours, peace, joy and inspiraEon for the coming year. From the Series, “That Reminds Me” By Gretchen Schleyer 4

Framing Workshop with Bob Pickett PICKETT’S FRAMING of Seguin has been in the framing industry for 40 years. He is an accomplished artist and shared his knowledge and best practices when framing your next artistic work! Mr. Pickett taught us so many cool things...like how to tie a knot with your wire to the clips instead of wrapping the wire so it will hold securely. He even let use his drills to practice attaching the clips & wire. Very Brave man! He taught us where & how to look to see if a frame is real wood or something else. It is not always easy to tell. How to tell quality mat board & glass. Explained what type of tools to buy if you are going to do a lot of framing on your own. I could go on and on. He is even willing to do another workshop if our group is interested. Debbie. 8
