Santa Barbara Cactus & Succulent Society Our mission is to provide opportunities for fellowship and exchange of information among persons sharing an interest in succulents; to encourage, promote and support all aspects of the responsible collection, culture, study and conservation of succulent plants; and to provide opportunities for the exchange and exhibition of succulent plants. General Meeting April 2019 Setup begins at 6:45 pm Ernesto Sandoval April 5th in Fellowship Hall Cacti and Succulents Inside and Out Trinity Lutheran Church 909 North La Cumbre Road, 93110 Ernesto will be sharing his understanding of the way succulents and other desert plants are adapted to surviving drought in desert and other dry environments. He’ll cover Biology (how they work overall); Anatomy (How they’re organized on the inside); Morphology (how they’re organized on the outside; and Ecophysiology (how all the parts above work together) to make the plants adapted to their often challenging lives. Ernesto thoroughly enjoys helping others, and gardeners in particular, to understand why and how plants do what they do. He has been seeking answers as to why plants grow and look the way that they do for a long time. Now he explains and interprets the world of plants to a variety of ages and experiences from K-12 to professionals as well as Master Gardeners. He regularly lectures to a variety of western Garden Clubs throughout the year and particularly to Succulent Clubs throughout California. Desert plants are his particular passion. He describes himself as a "Jose of All Plants, Master of None." When he was about 13 he asked his dad why one tree was pruned a particular way and another tree another way. His dad answered bluntly "because that's the way you do it.” Since then he's been learning and teaching himself the answers to those and many other questions by getting a degree at UC Davis in Botany and working from student weeder/waterer to Director over the last 25 years at the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory. As usual Ernesto will bring an assortment of plants, mostly hardy succulents to offer for sale! Recap of the Grow-Off Plants Distributed for 2019 Four plants were distributed following our December dinner meeting for our annual plant growing competition and enjoyment. These were: Agave guiengola (an agave from Oaxaca area, sometimes called "Creme Brulee Agave") Hippeastrum hybrids (bulbs from the Amaryllis family) Fockea edulis (grows large tuberous roots that can be raised above ground)

Lotusland’s 4th Grade Educational Outreach Program Begun in 1998, Lotusland’s 4th Grade Educational Outreach Program provides a unique way to bring the beauty and science of nature to students. Partnering with Santa Barbara County schools, Lotusland’s program integrates California’s 4th grade Life Science curriculum for the greatest possible impact in improving each student’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) comprehension. The program lessons are both fun and interesting, and there is no similar program in Santa Barbara County available to fourth grade students and their teachers. All schools in the County of Santa Barbara are welome to participate at NO COST, and even transportation by bus and train is provided free of charge. Prior to students arriving at Lotusland, each participating school receives a visit from one of Lotuslands highly trained docents and is treated to a rich presentation of important concepts of the life science curriculum, including photosynthesis, adaptation, interdependency of plants and animals, the importance of conservation, as well as science vocabulary. A prepared curriculum package is also sent to the school ahead of the docent’s scheduled presentation date. The presentation assures students arrive in the Garden well prepared for their field study. Lotusland’s plant collection of 3000 genera reinforces examples of what students previewed during the docent’s classroom visit, and revel in the outdoor setting which also works to strengthen their understanding of curriculum concepts. http://www.sbcactus.org
Santa Barbara Cactus & Succulent Society Lotusland’s Outreach program has proven impact. Participating teachers have reported through written evaluations and unsolicited comments that the program has improved their students’ knowledge and attitudes about plants and the environment. Lotusland is looking for interested volunteers to deepen the breadth of this legendary 4th grade educational outreach program. Training includes a shortened, six-week, outreach docent educational program for those of you who may be interested in leading 4th grade tours of the Garden. Presently, tours are on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Goals are to expand to Monday and Tuesday tours as well. If interested, please contact: Laurie Zalk, Outreach Coordinator Lotusland Gardens, 695 Ashley Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93108, 805 969 3767 ext 107. SBCSS Plant Show and Sale As mentioned last week, we hope many of you started cuttings last month for the sale. As in years passed, volunteers will gather for the labeling and pricing party, Friday the 10th of May, and again for the sale on Saturday the 11th. Please be generous with your time when the signup sheet gets passed around during the April and May meetings. As always the club is looking for one or more enthusiastic members to get involved with the planning and execution of the sale. This is an important event and we need your help to ensure its around for our community well into the future. If you would like to know more about what is needed and how you might get involved, reach out to me at a meeting or by email at fosterjp@cox.net, and let’s talk more about how you might participate. The show part of the sale is an important way of showing the public the diversity of succulents and how to present that “special plant” in its best light. Even if you only have a plant or two to show don't be shy please bring them to the show. There is a special table for member plants which always presents some really interesting specimens.
