             September 2018 newsletter

This month's newsletter is hot off the
keyboard, with a report, results and photos of
the club's first Open 10 mile TT. There's also
news about the forthcoming Tour of Britain,
cycling on stage, our second retro-ride,
Leyden Plaque report, details of another
velodrome visit, EGM comments, plus all the
other regular features.

Presidential ponderings

Anyone who has been a Banbury Star member for more than a couple
of years will know the family name of Pagington has been associated
with the club for a very long time. A glance through our archive material
shows the almost-constant presence of Roy Pagington over many
decades of social rides and on the local race circuit too (competing in a
100 mile time trial at the age of 57 with a time of 5h17m) and as a mark

of respect for his service to the club he was awarded an Honorary Life
Membership. Sadly, Roy passed away at the end of July and condolences
from the club have been passed on to the Pagington family. The name
still lives on in our membership with nephew Carlos who is another
long-term member although he's got a few years to go to beat Roy's
record.

Club rides have really benefitted from our incredible summer and those
memories of last winter's snow and rain are well and truly banished.
Autumnal cycling can be just as enjoyable as summer with the
Cotswolds' forests and hedgerows changing colour as the season draws
to a close. A great way to see this is to come on our October Reliability
Ride with a great route that shows the best of our region. More details
of this will be available next month.

Our racing season is also close to conclusion, with just one event left. My
thanks go out to everyone who has competed, pushed off or
volunteered to help. Special mention goes to Keri Williams, Roger
Gollicker and Mike Hicks for the hours they put in behind the scenes to
organise and run the time trials and road race. Without those three we
simply wouldn't be able to put on the great races we have done and for
which we are highly regarded.

2018 Time Trial season

Temporary traffic lights and road closures played havoc with last

month's evening weekly time trials, with the Tysoe 10 mile course having
to be used on two additional occasions. On the plus side, this technical
course is now well known and the wrong turns many have taken are
hopefully a thing of the past.

The success of our weekly TTs now attracts a growing number of visitors
from neighbouring clubs and this has included some topline riders. Dan
Bigham broke our 20k record in May and last month George Pym broke
the Tysoe 10m record. We also had double Olympic gold medallist
Hamish Bond from New Zealand turn up to a cancelled 20k night to
record an unofficial 23m57s.

Unfortunately however our evening season comes to an end on
Wednesday 5th September. Starting at 6pm in Gaydon, this is our
biannual 5 mile "Come and Try" event which bookends the races. The
relatively flat route enjoys a good road surface as it runs out to the new
roundabout at Kineton and then retraces itself back again into Gaydon.
It's a great and friendly way to get into time trialling. As is now
traditional we will retire to the Indian Queen restaurant after the race.

10 mile Open time trial report and results

What a great inaugural Open 10m TT the club have just laid on, with
positive feedback already following in. The course was fast on the way
out with descents and tailwinds, but the return after Gaydon
roundabout into a fresh headwind has been described as brutal.

The final entry for the event was 61, with 25 Star riders, which included
7 women, who put in a great effort to win the team prize. That's an
encouraging start for our new and second Open TT, due mainly to the
efforts of race secretary Mike Hicks.

Full results will shortly be posted on both the club website and on our
Facebook page, but the main results are as follows:

2018 Retro-Ride Sunday 16th September

Starting at Broadribb Cycles at 10am, our second Retro Ride will again
gently ride together for 5 miles before splitting into a faster and a slower
group to the coffee stop, where both groups will meet. The two rides will
be roughly 24 and 35 miles respectively. We hope members and friends
will enter into the spirit of the event with a bike from the 1980's or
earlier. Helmets are required and we won't turn away any newer bikes.
Golden Age Cycles are again awarding a trophy for 'The Best Presented
Bike and rider'. You can also hire a classic bike at £25 for the day, (with
profits going to 'Bikes for Africa). For more information, contact Brian

OVO Energy Tour of Britain 2-9 September

With both Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome
taking part, the interest in this year's event is
surely going to generate some massive
spectator interest. As we all probably know by
now Stage 4 on Wednesday 5th September is when the Tour visits our
patch. The climbs of Edgehill and Burton Dassett will obviously be
popular places to watch, but with a bit of planning it's possible to see
the riders two or three times on this stage.

Both Eurosport and ITV4 will be showing full live coverage, including
evening highlights programmes.

Leyden Plaque Interclub results

The Leyden Plaque was introduced into the
local race scene to encourage inter-club
competition over a 25 mile handicap course
with the aggregate time of the fastest four
riders determining who returns home with
the spoils.

Banbury Star competed with Oxford City Road Club and Oxonian CC for
the first time in 1952 with BSCC emerging victorious, since then we've
gone on to record a further 25 wins with 19 each for the Oxford clubs.

Over the years more clubs have been formed and now take part and
last weekend riders from Banbury, Bicester Millennium, Cowley Road
Condors, Didcot Phoenix, Mickey Cranks and Oxonian CC race for the
2018 prize.

This year's event was hosted by BMCC with a tough 25 mile course held
on the A420 near Oxford. Whilst Banbury Star are the current holders
on this occasion the host club just pipped us. However, Star rider Simon
Bull did win the "closest to the hour" prize, stopping the clock in an
impressive and well-judged 1h00m00s,

2.50.11, 3. Oxonian CC 2.56.30

Downhill and Uphill competition results

Last month saw the club hold its two shortest events, the downhill race
for the Trinders Trophy and the hill climb for the Durran Cup. Both
attracted an increased number of enthusiastic competitors with close
finishes in both.

Ian Maconnachie just managed to retain his downhill title by less than a
metre from Simon Kisley with Darrel Foulk in third place.

Luke Sherlock put in an impressive performance to win the Burton
Dassett hill climb with a time just 2 seconds short of the club record.
Harry Kirby was 3 seconds behind, with Adam Thorpe in third.

The Extraordinary General Meeting

Attendance at the July quarterly meeting was disappointinly poor with
insufficient members turning up to be able to vote for amendments to
the constitution:

- move the AGM from January to October

- move the club's financial year to end in October

Because of the need to incorporate this change that was proposed to
help with the smooth running and administration of the club an EGM
was held during August prior to a club ride taking place. This time we
had sufficient numbers for a successful vote to be taken. Thank you to
those who turned up on the day.

Club meetings do need more members to attend and take an active
part, it's a club for all of us and an opportunity to help shape our future

direction.

Derby Velodrome visit 19th October

Following the club's well attended and enthusiastic trip to Derby Arena
Velodrome back in March, another visit has now been booked for Friday
19th October with a 2 hour session starting at 11am.

Cafe of the month

      The Stables Tearoom,Canons Ashby

As the photo shows there's plenty of outside
seating as well as a large interior area at this
popular venue. A good range of teas and
coffees is available, plus a delicious selection
of locally made cakes. The tearoom is part of
the adjoining National Trust Canons Ashby house and gardens and is
open between 10am and 5pm daily.

Race Squad news

The race squad is one of the club's success stories this year, with a
continuing growth in members regularly taking part in Open TTs and
road races. The Monday night chain gangs continue from 6.15pm, with a
plan to introduce a Wednesday session as well, when our evening TT
season ends. Turbo sessions will begin again sometime in November, so
keep a lookout on Facebook for all these details.

Meanwhile, there are still Open TTs throughout September and October
to compete in and it is hoped we can arrange to take a large BSCC
contingent to the Thruxton closed circuit championship in mid-October.
Plus, the Abingdon Winter Crit series will be starting soon. So again,
keep a lookout on Facebook for further news.

Rising Stars - youth section news

With August being holiday time we held only one session last month on
11th August. Again this was well attended, by what is now a regular
group of enthusiastic youngsters.

As reported last month Lee Heron is now a British Cycling Level 1 Coach,
which will allow us to gain full Go-Ride accreditation. Katherine Daniels
is also in the throes of gaining her qualification which will then enable us
to promote the scheme to a wider audience. However, we could really
do with a couple more Level 1 coaches if we are to make this scheme a

Our next session will be on Saturday 15th September, starting as usual
at 9.30am at Banbury Rugby Club. We can also now announce two
further dates in October the 13th and 27th.

Don't forget, if your child joins the club as a junior member, which costs
just £5, then they get a free Rising Stars T-shirt.

Next club kit order - Important update

Following the announcement in last month's newsletter, not enough
orders were received by Dave Speck to warrant a new order being
placed. Dave advises that the order is still open and will be placed as
soon as the minimum quantity is reached.

If anyone is not sure of the procedure for ordering new kit, then please
contact Dave Speck via the link below.

Dave still holds a small stock of the short sleeved Classic jersey, priced
at £54.18.

The available sizes are Small, Medium, Large and XLarge.

New members qualify for a £20 refund from the club when you make

The Cycle Show NEC 28-30 September

The annual Cycle Show returns to Birmingham
NEC for 3 days at the end of the month.
British Cycling members should have already been notified that they can
obtain a discount by pre-booking and the link for that is given below.

Coming to The Mill Arts Centre, Banbury on
Thursday 4th October is a stage show called
simply Ventoux which members might be
interested in. Below is The Mill's brief
summary of what it's all about.

Ventoux is the most fearsome mountain
encountered on the Tour de France.
It is also the story of Lance Armstrong and Marco
Pantani – whose drug-fuelled race there in 2000
was the greatest cycling had ever seen. Ventoux charts the parallel lives of
these champions who overcame great adversity in tandem, and the
mountain that cast them in opposing directions.
Join 2Magpies as they restage the race using breathtaking video
accompaniment and a pair of road bikes, asking the question – how far will
we go to succeed?

The 5 Weekend Club Rides

Five weekend club rides are now available, please make sure you
pick the one to suit your ability and speed.

Have a look at the club's website and Facebook group for details of the
rides, all of which have downloadable Garmin maps:

10am Saturday: easy café ride: 25 miles, 12-14mph

10am Saturday: intermediate café ride 35 miles, 15-16mph

9am Sunday: fast non-café ride 50 miles 18mph*

9am Sunday: intermediate non-café ride 50 miles 16-17mph*

10am Sunday: intermediate café ride 35 miles 15-16mph

All rides will start at Broadribb Cycles, meeting 15 minutes before
the departure time.

* may be quicker depending on who is riding

Banbury Star CC monthly social evenings

September's social night takes place on Thursday 6th from 7.30pm, at
our usual friendly venue the White Horse. We had a good turn out at the
club BBQ which was held there last month, so let's keep the momentum
going for our social night's as autumn draws near.
