Dear OLG Families,

THANK-YOU! THANK-YOU! THANK-YOU! So many of you made Catholic Schools Week truly a memorable one
in this remarkable year! From
    ● the wonderful CSW homily shared by Fr. Joy, to
    ● the Parent Leadership from School Board and PTSG (Paul Clark, Tim Conners, Nadia Navarro, Marlon
Milanes) who attended the Virtual Open House to
    ● the children who dressed in their teachers’ favorite color and participated with great gusto in the
         “Guess Who” Kahoot, to
    ● the Essential Workers videos shared by Ramon Juta, (Lizzie, gr. 4; James, gr. 8), S. Dr. Thomas (aunt to
Laura Noel-Matthews, gr. 5) Nadia Navarro (Marcia gr. K), Mrs. Casey (Ms. Jessica Casey’s Mother), to
    ● the beautiful Peace Prayer Services organized by the teachers, to
    ● the Student Appreciation Gifts put together by the teachers, to
    ● the fabulous, fun-filled Bingo Night sponsored by PTSG!
Truly Catholic Schools Week, 2021, is one for the memory books! God bless you all!

Now we transition to Lent with Ash Wednesday on February 17. Prayer Services will be held in the classes,
Level K-3 & Levels 4-8. Our focus will be on the Catholic Social Teachings, “…a rich treasure of wisdom about
building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society.” (from the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops, USCCB). We will share more about this in next week’s bulletin.

Another major focus is the Swinging into Spring - Golf Tournament/Auction coming up in April. Parents, in
this very different year, there has not been much chance to do the usual fundraising that is necessary for our
budget. Our major fundraiser is upon us and we need everyone’s help to make it a tremendous success.
Please take some time to read carefully the attached pages about our Swinging into Spring. Your support and
efforts will help us meet our budgeted expectations of $20,000 profit. While this is less than the usual $30,00-
$35,000 profit we’ve made on the Crab Feed/Auction, I’m sure that with all the dedication from our school
community, we will be successful and more! Thank you ahead of time for all your involvement and support!

We have another “Dinner In” opportunity on February 24 at the Lazy Dog Restaurant in Newpark Mall,
Newark, from 11 am to Midnight. Save the date and we’ll have more details in next week’s newsletter.

With great gratitude,

S. Janice Therese, O.P.

Hi, Wonderful OLG Parents!

As we continue to navigate 2021 like it is 2020, I want to share with
you the concept of creating a Temenos with your children. What is a
Temenos? Temenos is a Greek word meaning sacred space; a time
you and your child immerse yourselves in an activity and your child
gets your 100% attention.

Too often we are so busy moving from task to task we forget to slow
down. We get lost in multi-tasking and forget what it’s like to sit and
revel in our children. Our phones are constantly on us and we check it all too often. So many things clamor for our
attention these days. Calls, texts, emails… People expect to get a hold of us 24/7. And our kids are often the ones
who get the short end of the stick. They may not think they want attention as they are used to being glued to their
screens. However, attention is essential.

Attention grows things. Studies have shown that plants grow better with attention (not just water, but people
simply paying attention.) Rice has been shown to ferment into edible miso when paid attention to, and to rot when
ignored. Children will act out in hopes of gaining negative attention if they are not given positive attention.

Create a 15-minute bubble where your objective is to be fully present with your child(ren). You can play a game,
cook, gaze at the clouds, snuggle, anything. The only rule is that both of you give the activity (and each other) your
full and undivided attention. It may even start with being uncomfortable and not knowing what to say, that is
wonderful too. Show them you can work through the discomfort and just honor your time together no matter what
it looks/feels like.

Put all of your electronic devices away. Anyone in need of your attention can wait 15 minutes. Have a worry
bucket (real or imaginary) where you and your child put all your stresses and worries in before you step into your
bubble. For older kids journaling together for 5 minutes or jotting down things that worry you can reduce stress
and create connection. You don’t need to fix anything, just listen and write. Have a timer so you won’t be
worrying about the passage of time, and you can get back to your daily routine. Make it consistent.

Give your child something to look forward to: every night at 8:30pm: Mondays and Wednesdays at 4pm; Sundays
at 2pm - whatever you can manage. Just make it consistent and full of love and attention.

Please reach out to me through email if you have any questions or would like extra support for your child or family
during this time.

All my best,

Your School Counselor,

Ms. Danielle ~ dbell@csdo.org

Support OLG School by playing in the tournament or become a sponsor of this special
event. Your contribution will go toward enhanced curriculum and technology
improvements that will provide an excellent learning experience for our students both on-
site and virtually. To ensure that our children, the Bay Area’s future adults, are well
educated and grounded in sound moral values, our parents make enormous sacrifices to
provide their children with the benefits of a Catholic education. Your gift to OLG is a gift to
the children and to our community.
