“View from the Pew” by George W. Reilly Happy Father’s Day Today is the day we remember our fathers, whether still with us or having already passed on to their eternal re- ward. There are those who say that the word FATHER simply stands for “FAITHFUL AND TRUSTWORTHY, HON- ORING EVERY RESPONSIBILITY.” That is a nice sentiment, but my view for you today is to look a bit deeper, per- haps because I am a father of two children and immensely proud of them and their offspring of four grandkids. Nothing makes me happier. In thinking back on my own father as I grew up in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s, my father was stern but reasonable and a no-nonsense type, and you always knew where he was coming from. Like my Dad, did yours speak with the voice of reason or the voice of doom? What “fatherly sayings” had the biggest influence on your life? Perhaps you, too, heard a lot of the following phrases while growing up. “Don't ask me, ask your mother. Were you raised in a barn? Close the door. You didn't beat me. I let you win. I'll play catch with you after I read the paper. A little dirt never hurt anyone; just wipe it off. You call that a haircut? This will hurt me a lot more than it hurts you. You call that noise "music"? You want an allowance? When I was your age, I treated MY father with respect. As long as you live under my roof, you’ll live by my rules. I’ll tell you why. Because I said so. That’s why. You want something to do? I’ll give you something to do. What do you think I am, a bank? What part of NO don't you understand?” • This is a true story. One day, when I was about 12-years-old, I was changing the toilet paper roll, and unfortu- nately dropped the wooden spring dowel down the toilet. My father was pretty angry with me for my mistake. But he set out to take apart the fixture to remove the dowel. He went into the basement to shut off the water and wanted me to help. I unfortunately turned the wrong valve and he got blasted with water. When he dried off, he drove to the plumbing supply house for parts. When he parked the car, he got too close to the curb, rubbed the tire and got a flat. My poor Dad changed the tire, bought the toilet parts in the store, fixed the toi- let, turned the water back on, and went on with his day. He passed away in October of 1961, just a couple of months after I had started my studies at Providence College, but I still remember his patience and restraint on that day. Happy Father's Day, Dad! * How about starting a new Father’s Day tradition this year? When you see your Dad today, lean over the give him a big hug and say in his ear, “I love you Dad.” Hopefully, he responds with the same sentiment and a new tradition emerges. • • Father’s Day is an opportunity to tell Dad how much you appreciate him on this third Sunday in June. New dads, experienced dads, granddads, dads-in-law, stepdads, girl dads, serious dads, goofball dads…there must be a million fatherly types out there, and without a doubt, there are at least that many reasons to honor them on Father’s Day with your own original card for him. Why spend $5 on a fancy card when you can write these expressions on paper yourself for Dad. • “I’m so proud to be your kid.” “Dad, you’re still the one I think of first when I have a question about something or when I just need some support and good advice. Thank you for always being there for me.” “You taught me so many of the important things I know—including a few choice words for certain situa- tions.” “God gave me such a good gift when he gave me you for a father.” “Dad, you’ve got my back. That keeps me stepping up to what challenges come in life. Love you so much for that.” “I love that we can have a beer, wrestle with the meaning of life and talk about anything—including religion and politics.” “Sending you heartfelt appreciation on Father’s Day. It’s the least I can do considering all the gray hairs I’ve caused you.” “Thanks for teaching me all the best things I know…plus some other good stuff that I probably should have paid more attention to. Love you, Dad!
PRIZES NEEDED FOR THE OLOG FEAST STRAW RAFFLE The 2021 OLOG feast is quickly approaching and the Straw Raffle Game is in need of prizes.
