Dear Friends, Spring 2018 Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve God. Let hope keep you joyful, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of God’s people; and practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Romans 12: 9-16, 18 How timely and helpful these words of the Apostle Paul seem to us today! We are in the midst of rapid and constant change. We see people strongly divided on key issues throughout society. We experience drastic shifts in the quality of the environment. We are witness to a level of human suffering, locally and globally, that we never guessed would be happening in the 21st century. We know that many people feel disconnected, questioning who and what to believe. Paul speaks across the centuries, clearly articulating what we are to do as followers of Jesus. This is what centers and grounds us. We are here to love one another. We are here to be joyfully present to one another, with hope and patience. We are here to know, love and serve God by living in peace with all. So simple and at the same time, so challenging, but when we learn to truly trust in the Spirit, we will have inner peace and be able to share it with others. With your prayers, love and support, we continue to live our lives as Dominican Sisters and women of the Gospel. The Spirit continually enlightens and strengthens us. Please enjoy the news we share in these pages that reflect our best efforts, individually and communally, to follow Paul’s counsel. We hope our stories will brighten your day and encourage you to rejoice and be grateful for your own expression of Jesus’ teachings. We enjoy seeing so many of you at our various events: Jubilee, Friends of the Sisters, Gather@Grand, and Bible study classes. For those of you not able to come to San Rafael, we so appreciate your phone calls, notes and emails. Please stay in touch with us, and always be assured of our prayers. Gratefully, Sister Maureen McInerney, O.P. Prioress General Preachers of Truth • Love • Justice

It was a beautiful late April weekend in San Rafael for the five sisters on ocations the Vocations Council and five single Catholic young women. The Come and See was an invitation to bring curiosity and questions about life as a Dominican Sister, and about God at work in all of our lives. There was great conversation, good food, and new friendships formed! If you or anyone you know is interested in exploring a call to religious life, let us know! vocations@sanrafaelop.org You Are Invited to Join Us Mass and Reception in Honor of our Jubilarians Saturday, July 21, 2018 To receive an invitation by mail, please call (415) 453-8303 or email CommunityRelations@sanrafaelop.org Photo by Debra Greenblat. Two years ago the vigil relocated to the border wall in Nogales to protest, not only the continuous human rights abuses by the military who are trained at SOA, but also the wall itself and the militarization of the border. We began the November 2017 vigil at Eloy Detention Center, out- side of Tucson. The Center is a private prison contracted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) where immigrants, both men and women, are detained, sometimes for years. It was moving to see the silhouettes of detainees in windows who communicated with us by turning lights on and off in their cells and by banging on windows. We learned that the price they paid for doing so was restriction of their privileges, such as visitations with family and legal representation. From Eloy, we could go on to either Tucson for a gathering, or to Nogales for a procession to the border, about 1.5 miles from the main hotel and event center. Anne, Judy and I opted for the latter, and spending the morning on the Mexican side of the wall. Entering Mexico was easy; leaving was harder, with a very long wait at the crossing. But we felt privileged to witness the solidarity and yearnings of people on the Mexican side of the wall. In these days of deep concern for our immigrant brothers and sisters, we ask you to join your actions, voices and prayers to the pleas we made while joining with hundreds of young and not-so-young from around the country to say “Yes!” to peace and “No!” to violence in all its forms. For more information about SOA Watch, more photos of our 2017 experience, and our personal reflections, contact CommunityRelations@sanrafaelop.org to receive the December 2017 issue of OPtions for Justice, published by Sister Judy Lu McDonnell and Lyn Kirkconnell, our Co-Promoters of Justice, Peace and Care of Creation. 5

It is in Giving That We Receive We are fortunate in the Bay Area to have the Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL). Its mission since 1964 has been to advance nonprofit and volunteerism by strengthening leadership, encouraging innovation, and empowering individuals. For the last 25 years CVNL has hosted the Annual Heart of Marin Awards in January. This year we were nominated for the Excellence in Innovation Award for the Yellow Hallway Project that you have read about in our last two issues. The other nominees in that category, and in the seven other categories, were stunning for the issues they addressed and the dedication to the common good they showed. While we did not win an award, we were honored to have been nominated, and to share the luncheon with several hundred extraordinary people in our community who are inspired to make life better for others. We were especially touched by the youth volunteers. Five of the seventeen worthy nominees received $1,000 awards. Their eloquence about their beliefs and activities was inspiring! Courtesy of St. Raphael Parish. Last year was a time of great celebration for St. Raphael Parish in San Rafael, marking 200 years since its founding in 1817! There were special events for several months, culminating in December with a multicultural Mass and reception. The Sisters joined the parish just 72 years after it was founded and have always felt a part of it. Congratulations to those, past and present, who have created and maintained a beautiful and welcoming community for all! As one of the largest non-profit Courtesy of Dignity Health. health systems in the U.S., Dignity Health is committed to innovating healthcare through global collaborations. China recognizes its health challenges related to air and water quality. It also has a growing senior population. A few years ago, the government began major healthcare reforms. In the process, China looked to the west for partners in developing facilities and services to meet their projected needs. Sister Maureen and the other Dignity Health representatives put on their hard hats to visit the site of a brand new hospital in Hefei slated to open this summer. Dignity Health personnel consulted on the hospital’s Francoise Lepage posed with the design, including the technology needed, and will provide education and Achievement in Global Education award winners, Sister Patricia training for the cardiac and orthopedic physicians. Forming Global Citizens Congratulations to Sister Patricia Dougherty and Professor LeeAnn Bartolini, long-standing friend of the sisters, who received the Francoise Lepage Achievement in Global Education Award at a ceremony last November. This award recognizes and honors faculty/staff of Dominican University who contribute to the mission of “educating socially respon- sible global citizens” through their hard work, innovation, and commitment to global learning. Devoted readers of our newsletter will recall that Sister Patricia assists with the annual Fanjeaux Seminar to France, and LeeAnn has gone on more than one service learning trip with students to Uganda. 8
