ARMS TO SAUDI ARABIA On 7 July, the government announced it was to resume licensing arms sales to the Saudi-led coalition bombing Yemen. This is an incomprehensible decision. Thousands of Yemeni people have been killed by five years of bombing, many more by hunger and disease. Now Yemen faces COVID-19 with a health system shattered by war. Despite this terrible human impact – and despite UK rules which prohibit the licensing of arms exports where there is a clear risk they might be used in violations of international humanitarian law – the UK government has done all it can to keep the weapons flowing to Saudi Arabia, the largest buyer of UK weapons.
