The Lowry Academy OPEN EVENING Thursday 7th October 2021 Information Booklet: Maps Events Subjects
Events - The Forum Join our Deputy Head Teacher, Mr Oldfield in the Forum to hear about life at The Lowry Academy, our expectations and our aspirations for our students. There will be the opportunity to ask Mr Oldfield questions and speak to members of our Senior Leadership Team following the address. Mr Oldfield will be addressing parents/families at the following times: • 4.15pm • 5.15pm
Events - The Canteen Throughout the evening there will be refreshments provided for our visiting families, served by the staff in our canteen. Whilst in the canteen, take the opportunity to sample a selection our school lunches and desserts from our serving station!
Co-Curricular We have an extensive choice of after school clubs and activities including: Homework club, Dance, Karate, Boxing, Football, Maths Club and Magazine Club to name only a few! We track our co-curricular attainments through our Aspire programme which ensures that students are rewarded for their co-curricular efforts!
The Library Come and have a look around The Lowry Academy and browse the wide selection of books by authors representing different countries, cultures, traditions and genres! Take part in our Guess the Cover quiz and other quizzes and activities!
The Hub – Learning Support Come and have a look around The Lowry Academy Hub! Take part in our games and activities, use our curriculum resources and meet our dedicated SEND team.
EAL – English as an Additional Language Our department promotes and celebrates a rich multicultural diversity within school with almost 170 students from other countries speaking a variety of over 50 languages! We offer a range of support from individual sessions for our newest arrivals to online booster tuition, bi- lingual dictionaries and home language GCSE’s for our Y11’s. Our hub is open for support, pastoral care and friendship activities throughout the school day.
Subjects - English Come and have a look around! Have a peek at our KS3 work on short stories including ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’, classics including Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ and our studies on Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’! See for yourselves the hard work our KS4 students are putting in on our set texts: Macbeth, A Christmas Check out our homework Carol and An Inspector Calls! platform, Bedrock!
Subjects - Mathematics Come and see us on the first floor! Have a look around our classrooms and join in with the activities we have taking place. See our KS3 work on topics such as: place value, perimeter and indices and our KS4 work on graphs and formula! Have a sneak peek at our homework platform, Sparx, and see the league tables in action!
Subjects - Science Visit our labs! Meet our staff and students as they showcase our Biology, Chemistry and Physics curriculum! Biology - Watch as staff and students demonstrate starch tests, reaction times and dissection. Chemistry – Help us create elephant toothpaste and methane bubbles, carry out flame tests and make Jelly Babies scream! Physics – Join us whilst we put our electricity kits to use, create static electricity and put our oscilloscope to work!
Subjects - Humanities Join us for Geography, History and RE on the first floor! Have a look at our KS3 and KS4 work and join in with our activities including: quizzes and jigsaws and have a go at our Guess the Continent and Guess the Religion games!
Subjects - Spanish Come and see us! Take part in our Spanish taster lesson, have a look at the fantastic work our students produce! Have a sneak peek at our homework platform, Languagenut and see the league tables in action!
Subjects – ICT and Computer Science Come and see us! All students in ICT will be taught a challenging and enriching curriculum which promotes a mastery level of computational thinking concepts. All students will have the opportunity to see computing live in action in the real world and will be able to draw on the expertise of real life computer scientists. Our curriculum aims to produce high level computer scientists and effective problem solvers.
Subjects – Design Technology Come and have a look around! See our new laser cutter in action and make your own keyring, observe our students wood turning on the lathe. Browse a selection of project work and have a look at the KS4 offerings of Engineering & Construction!
Subjects – Art, Textiles and Photography Come and have a look around our Art, Textiles and Photography classrooms and view the KS3 and KS4 work we have on display! Meet our staff and see just how hard our students have been working on their projects! *Don’t forget to look out for our feature art dedicated to Marcus Rashford in the canteen!
Subjects – Food Technology Come and see our fantastic food room and take part in our pizza tasting activities! Meet our staff and students who will tell you all about the sessions we have in store for you in Year 7!
Subjects – Music, Drama and Performing Arts Our Dance, Drama and Music departments welcome you and ask you to watch us perform! Come and observe rehearsals for our upcoming events in the dance studio, watch our fantastic students run through scenes in the drama studio and try out our instruments in the music rooms!
Subjects – Physical Education Join us in our Sports Hall! Try out our sports equipment and meet our staff and watch our students in action!
