Language Academy Online Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes 2020-21 Where opportunity creates success
Language Academy Language Academy is accredited by the British Council and is recognised for its facilities, course design and care of students. Working with international students all year round, it is located on a city centre based campus within the School of Humanities, Language and Global Studies. The Pre-sessional English Language courses are designed to enable students to develop the skills they need to succeed on their chosen degree course at the University of Central Lancashire. Get ready to study in the UK A Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes course will help you: • To improve your English language (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) • To improve your academic English skills (for writing assignments, understanding lectures, participating in seminars, reading and making presentations) • To develop the study skills you need to succeed • To understand UK academic conventions so you know how to do well in your studies • To improve your social English and understanding of British culture Students who successfully complete the Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes course at the required level for their chosen degree programme, will be deemed to have met the English language requirements for their course at UCLan and don’t need to take an additional IELTS test. Study Hours Per Week: 20 hours per week Assessment: A combination of coursework (70%) and final test (30%) Certificate of Completion: Marks for writing, speaking, reading and listening Class Sizes: Maximum of 15 students per class Minimum Age: 18
Teaching and learning Each week you will have a range of activities, including live classes, peer study sessions, a lecture and tutorials, as well as guided self-study. As well as teaching the online classes and tutorials, your tutors will guide you through the various activities and provide feedback on your progress. You will take part in group discussions, watch videos and lectures, read and discuss academic articles, and make short presentations. All your classes and other activities will be run through Teams. Here you will be able to talk to and message classmates and teachers, attend classes, and complete your self-study activities. We will provide training on how to use Teams and Blackboard at the start of the course. Staying in touch The Pre-sessional is an interactive course, and you will have daily contact with both your teacher and classmates. Teams is a great way to communicate. Technical requirements As this is an interactive online course, your teachers will expect you to be able to join in online classes using video. You will need to have access to a computer with a camera and microphone, as well as broadband internet access so that you can participate in class. UCLan provides free versions of MS Office, which you should download before the start of the course.
