Pastor’s Letter ___________________________________________ “And the crowds came together again …” I used these words from the gospel of Mark in a recent sermon to give thanks for the fact that we can gather together in the sanctuary again like we used to do before the pandemic. While we make continued efforts to also be present online and will be using some new cameras in the near future, there is really nothing that can quite replace the gathering of God’s people in God’s house. We know it is not about the space, and that you can encounter God in many different ways and many different places. But being in our sanctuary and sitting in the same place where so many have sat before, singing our praises to God together and listening to the organ, taking the Holy sacrament with others, and confessing our sins in a sacred place. We all know that this is very special, and we missed out on it over the last year. But we are back, and we will continue to grow into the new normal after Covid. Some things will return, others may have to wait for a little bit. But I am filled with gratitude for being able to gather together with you and to do what I love. Talking about God’s love for us and encouraging us to follow God’s vision for this world, building bridges, spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. I know many of you will use the chance to travel over the summer to reconnect with family and friends or simply to be refreshed and renewed. Blessings to you and safe travels. If you are in town, please join us for worship and opportunities for fellowship. At the end of July, we will have an ice cream social sponsored by a local ice cream shop. Towards the end of August, we will celebrate the conclusion of the internship of Ethan Doan with us. Other events will be planned and shared via email and tidings. We are hoping for a strong turnout for our music camp August 23 to August 27. This is really an opportunity for us to reconnect as a community under the umbrella of music. It will be so wonderful to finally hear the children sing again. I can’t wait to see the smiles and the excitement. As we go into the summer months the season of Green is upon us. Green means growth. Not surprisingly we get many parables over the summer and a five-week section on the bread of life. Personally, I can’t wait to bring back the yummy Challah bread for the celebration of communion and use our homemade wine once more. It is going to be wonderful. My prayer is that many of us would consider participating in the ministries of St. Paul’s and continue to support us as you have in the past. We also have plenty of room for some new people to get involved. If you have an idea of a ministry that you would like to start, please share it with the leadership of St. Paul’s and we will try to support you as best we can. Have a wonderful summer and be blessed. With much love, Pastor Henrik Sonntag Music Camp 2021 ________________________________________ St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Glenside is holding a 5-day summer music camp Monday, August 23rd through Friday, August 27th. Vicar’s Voice _____________________________________________ Hello everyone, we have officially made it to the summer months. I am sure that this is exciting for most of you. Personally, I know that I am excited. I am excited for the warm weather and the potential beach days. I am excited to be outside. I am excited for the new possibilities that the summer brings. In my opinion, this year’s summer brings a lot of hope. There is hope that this pandemic will become more manageable. There is hope that businesses will start to open back up and that things will come closer to being back to “normal”. This past year has been hard on everyone in different ways. However, this summer gives us hope. The other day I was watching a movie. I really enjoy watching movies. It is one of my favorite ways to relax. One movie genre that I always seem to come back too is historical war films. The other day I watched a film that I had never seen before. It was called A Bridge Too Far. The film stars the late actor Sean Connery and was released in 1977. The film is about Operation Market Garden in War World II, which is the largest airborne operation in history. The operation took place on September 17, 1944. In truth, I did not know much about this operation before I watched the film. The objective of the mission was to seize a series of bridges by airborne troops which would then allow a land force to cross over the Rhine. This would allow the Allied forces to enter Germany’s industrial heartland of the Ruhr. If successful, the war would be significantly shortened. However, the operation was not as successful as hoped. There were numerous setbacks from the very beginning. Throughout the film, you see the airborne forces secure the bridges. The land force then slowly made its way over the bridges and along its route. However, the land force is not successful in getting to the last bridge in Arnhem. This leads to the Germans retaking the bridge, and thousands of wounded British and Polish troops being taken into German captivity. Many soldiers died in Operation Market Garden. The reason why I am telling you all this is because I continually got sadder as I watched the film. At the beginning, I thought that maybe they would pull it off. However, they were not successful. They got so close to Arnhem, but they were not close enough. As I got to the end of the film, I had realized that it was just going to be a sad film. I did not think that anything was going to change that. However, then something happened that quite surprised me. In one of the last scenes, a large group of wounded soldiers is sitting waiting to be captured by the Germans. Suddenly, a soldier starts to sing the hymn “Abide with Me” (ELW 629). As the soldier sings, slowly the rest of the soldiers join in. This image stuck with me. This song is about the promise of our Lord and his presence with us in all situations. The Lord abides with us always even in times of trouble. It is a song of hope and assurance. This was a reminder for me that there is always hope even in the dreariest of situations. There is always hope because of our Lord, who abide with us always. Our hope comes from the Lord. So, as the summer carries on, there is a lot of hope. There is the hope that we receive from God’s creation. There is the hope that we receive from being with the rest of God’s people. The summer bring a lot of hope and it comes to us from our lord. Let us remember this and let us rejoice in the hope that this summer will bring. Amen. Peace and Blessings, Vicar Ethan Doan Sunday School Event Entry Hello everyone! It sure is hot outside. We know that some of you may already be dreading this summer heat. Vicar Ethan sure is starting to look forward to the fall. To beat the heat, St. Paul’s would like to invite you all to our ice cream party! The party will be held outside on the patio and the surrounding area on July 25, 2021. The party will start proximately at 11:00 a.m. after our Sunday service. The plan is to have some water activities for the kids related to baptism, so bring a change of clothes! More information will be coming in the future. All are welcome! Come have fun with us! Invitation to Kathleen Kerin’s Ordination______________________ I am so grateful for the people of St. Paul's. As you may know, this past March, I received a Call to be the Pastor at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Olney section of Philadelphia, PA. I will be Ordained and Installed on Saturday, July 17th at 10:00 am in the congregation's sanctuary. With a joyous heart I invite you to be a part of this long-awaited day. I am so happy to say that Pastor Sonntag will be preaching, and Caroline VanPelt will be singing. Protocols for Philadelphia have allowed for those who are fully vaccinated to go mask-less; all other protocols have been discontinued. For the Ordination, I encourage people to wear masks while inside to protect the vulnerable and will ask people to sign in. I look forward to celebrating this day with you! Grace and Peace, Kathleen Kerin
Dear St. Paul’s Family, It is with mixed emotions that I announce that I will be resigning from my position as Parish Secretary by the end of the summer. As many of you may know, I have been dating my high school boyfriend, TJ, for the past 4 years. We have been maintaining a long-distance relationship between Glenside and Northern Virginia. The three plus hour drive has been no fun. In April, TJ proposed, and I said yes!!! We plan to marry in the summer of 2022. Because of his position with the county’s sheriff’s office, I am selling my house and moving there. We are at the beginning stages of building an addition on his current home which will include an in-law suite for my father and will give us enough space to accommodate, as needed, our combined 6 adult children. I plan on continuing here in my position through much of August. I have an end of August settlement date on my house so that I can smoothly send Connie back to Wagner College on Staten Island for her senior year and send Carson off to Holy Family University in Northeast Philadelphia for his freshman year. Jackson will remain working as an assistant manager at Produce Junction in Glenside and will stay in the apartment he moved into in February in Fort Washington. I leave with the excitement of finally being together in the same place with TJ, and with sadness that I am leaving my wonderful work and church family. When I began in this role in November 2007, I never anticipated that I would still be here over 13 years later. I love working in this office, and with our wonderful staff. I am thankful for and appreciative of working with Henrik, Rae Ann, Nancy, Kathleen Getz, Kathleen Kerin, Bob, and the numerous interns over the years. I recognize how lucky I am to work in such a positive, supportive, and caring environment. I am thankful for and appreciative of the support which council and the congregation has given me over the years. The flexibility that this job has allowed me over the years has been a blessing for raising my children and for addressing all my health needs. I leave richer for having worked here. And, most importantly, I am so thankful that the membership of St. Paul’s has wrapped me, Connie, Jackson, and Carson in your loving embrace over the past 21 years of our membership. We are very blessed for all of you. Sincerely & with affection, Laura Lindberg. Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America FROM THE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP May 27, 2021 St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church 120 N Easton Road Glenside, PA 19038 “In Christ all will be made to live” (Corinthians 15:22) Dear Pastor Sonntag and the Saints at St. Paul’s: On behalf of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod, please accept our sincere and heartfelt condolence as you celebrated the life of the Rev. Cindy Ray on May 22, 2021. You continue to be in my prayers and thoughts as you mourn and recall the many wonderful memoires. While my schedule did not allow me to attend, let me share my thoughts with you. I am sure you welcomed the grace, strength, and consolation that Christ has continued to provide since her transition last year. I thank God you can lean on the care of each other as Pastor Ray was a dear colleague and friend to many. Pastor Ray’s gracious and generous spirit, her compassion and understanding, her hospitality and genuine welcome blessed all she touched. Her faith in her Lord, and her love for St. Paul’s, SEPA Synod, and her friends were evident throughout her nearly 4 decades of ordained ministry. Throughout her ministry she served in the following ways: Pastor, Salem-St. Paul (Kresgeville, PA) 1983-1984; Assistant Pastor, Advent (West Lawn, PA) 1986-1992; Assistant Pastor, Trinity (Lansdale, PA) 1992-1993; Asst. Director of Advancement, LTSP 1993-1996; Assoc. Dir/Youth Ministry, Division for Congregational Ministry 1996-1997; and as Pastor, St. John (Folcroft, PA) 1998-2010. Pastor Ray served St John‘s, Folcroft for many years and is loved and remembered by staff and members fondly for her wonderful sermons and powerful witness in the community. I appreciated the partnership when I served at Spirit and Truth in Yeadon, PA. I remember well, as a new pastor, Pastor Ray sitting in my office sharing words of wisdom, support, and encouragement. I miss her dearly. Let us take comfort and strength in the knowledge that Pastor Ray has claimed her baptismal promise, and rests eternally in Christ’s love and grace. May we who still live by faith love one another as we have been commanded by our Lord and encouraged by her example. In Christ, The Rev. Patricia A. Davenport, Bishop On Friday, July 16th, funeral services for Joan and Joe Daughen will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Calling hours will be 9:30-11 a.m. in the Great Room, with the funeral following immediately after in the sanctuary. The memorial service for Mrs. Phyllis Linn will be held on Saturday, October 2nd at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary at St. Paul’s. The calling hour will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Great Room. A luncheon will take place immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is invited to attend.

Thank you for keeping our building safe and our utility bills as low as possible! Memorial Garden Update This past week, we finally were able to inscribe last fall's names on the garden panels. We already have a few more new names to add. If you want to find out about inscribing your name on the memorial wall, please contact the church office by July 15, 2021. Thank you. Spring Clothing Drive Results The spring clothing drive collected 3,755 pounds of clothing, which generated $375.50. The original quoted price per pound was slightly reduced due to the fact that two collections (one at the end of each week) were required and the spike in gas prices during the period. The revenue was distributed as follows: $50 to Boy Scout Troop #48 and $325.50 to St. Paul’s Youth. We send enormous thanks out to all those who donated items for this event. Special thanks go also to Ed Hayes, who arranged the use of the scout trailer, as well as all those who volunteered their time and energy to monitor donations and assist donors and manage the pickup. Food Pantry Items Requested With the end of the school year in June comes the end of school breakfast and lunches for some students. Some area school districts may offer free summer lunches for pickup, but not all students are able to take advantage of this. Also, our pantry has been used more as of late, and we are running low on some items. If you can pick up an item or two, that would be great. Finally, we could use additional donations of grocery store gift cards in anticipation that we may have more needs for items for families with children home for the summer. Thank you for your continued support of our food pantry clients. Please note that the food pantry is open to members who need extra help during a difficult time. Bread For the World’s Offering of Letters Over the years, letters from our and other congregations voicing shared concerns have helped inspire our leaders in Washington to pass legislation that reduces hunger in the United States and around the world. Because of persistent advocacy, Congress passed the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021, legislation that contains numerous provisions that will help people struggling with hunger and poverty. The pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in our hunger safety nets and food systems. Not everyone has the same access to nutritious food. The levels of U.S. hunger are now higher than during the Great Depression, and the social and economic impact of the pandemic continues to devastate families and communities in the U.S. and around the world. While there will be no in-church letter-writing event this year, the congregation is encouraged to personally send letters or emails to our Congressmen in Washington, urging them to expand anti-hunger programs in response to the pandemic and to pass legislation that increases funding for global nutrition programs. Visit bread.org/ol to learn more and to find a sample letter. We must work together to ensure that freedom from hunger is a core principle of U.S. policy and to create food systems that support the end of hunger and malnutrition. Thank you for your continued participation in this effort! Good Works Team Altar flowers are available for all Sundays in July and August.
