OLLI Leadership Greetings from the 2020 -2021 OLLI Council President Council Directors Larry Hunter, President John Ferris, Vice President A bout a year ago we OLLI members were celebrating having raised the funds needed for an extensive remodel of our Campbell Center Irv Lubliner, Treasurer facilities. However, this renovation presented Betsy Gentry, Secretary us with a signifcant challenge—our Campbell Clark Custodio, Director Center classrooms would not be available for Phyllis Fernlund, Director the fall term, and only one of the two buildings at this location would be available for winter Lyn Gutierrez, Director term. Would our members stick with OLLI at Larry Hunter, Bill Mansfeld, Director SOU with course locations scattered around OLLI Council President Elisabeth Zinser, Director Ashland, Phoenix, and Medford? How would our instructors feel about teaching in unfamiliar places? The challenge Standing Committees became a terrifc opportunity for both instructors and learners to experience Communications and something new. We had a record number of course offerings, and strong Community Outreach support from our members. Thanks to our professional staff, volunteer Peg Evans, Chair leaders, instructors, and members, together we did it! Curriculum By the beginning of spring term, we thought we would be celebrating the Ginny Blankinship and grand opening and dedication of our Ashland facility, with improved tech- Susan Stitham, Co-chairs nology, sightlines, restrooms, and a new member lounge. But the Spring term Finance we envisioned did not bear any resemblance to our hopes and expectations. Irv Lubliner, Chair Covid-19 reared its ugly head in the midst of our winter dreaming and there Funds Policy and Management was to be no in-person learning. In a very short time, however, our assistant Wayne Davison, Chair director, Rob Casserly, our instructors, and our curriculum committee put together about 30 online courses. Our experience this spring has prepared us Future Space Needs Cliff Edwards, Chair well for having our entire fall curriculum offered digitally—OLLI 2U at SOU! Landscape OLLI 2U at SOU includes over 100 courses, mostly using Zoom technology. Sandra Hansen, Chair There are many benefts to this type of learning, including seeing the faces of all your classmates and their names; hearing everything the instructor says; Leadership Development and Recruitment having no sightline problems, no snow days, no transportation challenges Lorraine Vail, Chair and no parking issues; having access to class when traveling, homebound or not feeling well; having more “seats” available for classes taught by our most Member Services Andrea Gay, Chair sought after instructors; and being able to wear pajamas to class. OLLI will provide training and support for instructors and learners this summer. When Personnel it is safe to do so, OLLI classes will return to Campbell Center, the Higher Rachel Jones, Chair Education Center in Medford, and our other in-person venues. But we know that OLLI 2U at SOU will continue to be a vital component of OLLI at SOU. OLLI Management The challenge of this spring has become a chance for me to grow and to learn Director, Outreach & to navigate a new way of learning. If I can handle the technology, almost Engagement Programs anyone can. Are you open to turning the present challenge into a wonderful Rachel Jones opportunity to experience and learn something new? I’m defnitely willing. I Assistant Director, OLLI hope you are, too. Rob Casserly Sincerely, Larry Hunter, OLLI at SOU Council President OLLI at SOU 3 Fall 2020 Catalog

A note from SOU Director, Outreach and Engagement Programs... W elcome to fall term! Typically, fall term for me feels like a return to normal routines after a busy three months flled with campus youth activities, travels, and summer fun. This year, however, will be anything but normal. In the spring, we made a rapid transition to online courses as the COVID-19 crisis quickly unfolded. The quick shift to a virtual spring term meant that we had very little time to adjust, yet everyone rose to meet the challenge. OLLI instructors, students, staff, and volunteers were remarkably impressive in their adaptability and willingness to try a different way of learning. My thanks go out to you, as a member of the OLLI at SOU community, for re- maining engaged and committed to this organization. Your faith in OLLI contin- ues to help us weather this diffcult time so we can continue enriching the lives of all of our members. While we all long for a return to campus and gathering in person with friends, one small gift is having the luxury of time as we plan for a fall term unlike any Rachel Jones, Director, we have had before at OLLI at SOU. I am inspired that so many fne instructors SOU Outreach & Engagement have stepped up to teach remote classes this fall, and I hope to be similarly in- spired that many, many OLLI members take advantage of the course offerings. As we settle into an unprecedented fall term of virtual learning, I hope you will fnd that OLLI provides a semblance of normality—although the delivery method has changed, the familiar faces and joy of learning that OLLI provides remain.
