STAFFORD TOWN- A CLUB HISTORY Founded in 1976 by Gordon Evans as ‘Stafford’, the club started out in the Midland Combination, winning Division Two at the second time of asking. They changed their name to Stafford Town in 1981 and left the Midland Combination the following year to become founding members of the Staffordshire Senior League. They remained in the competition until 1993 before joining the West Midlands Regional League. Town enjoyed success in this league, winning Division One in their debut season and then the Premier Division in 2000, earning them promotion to the Midland Football Alliance at Step 5. After successive relegations the club found themselves back in the WMRL Division One, where they won promotion from in 2010 as runners up, losing the title narrowly on goal difference to Wellington Amateurs. The team then transferred over to the Midland Combination, where they competed until 2018 . After winning the Les James Challenge Cup in 2014, the club were relegated to the Staffordshire Senior League. The club bounced back, gaining promotion and prompting a return back to the Midland Football League Division One as well as winning the Staffordshire Senior League Cup in the same season. Town held their own in the division in two disrupted seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The club now embarks on a new journey, moving to the North West Counties League, where they will compete in the Division One South for the upcoming 2021/22 campaign. HONOURS LIST 1979- Midland Combination Division Two winners 1994- West Midlands Regional League Division One winners 2000- West Midlands Regional League Premier Division winners 2013- Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service 2014- Les James Challenge Cup winners 2019- Staffordshire Senior League Premier Division Cup winners
A WORD FROM THE MANAGER’S OFFICE It’s been over a year since Steve and Dom were appointed as joint managers of Stafford Town. This will be our second pre season at Stafford and the focus is now on competing in a new league with a mainly retained squad from the end of last season. Stafford have some very competitive games coming up to prepare for the new season in the North West Counties League, with games against Tividale, Shawbury United, Lye Town and Haughmond; four tough home games to test Town, who finished last season competing well against new Midland Football League Premier Division sides in Stone and Uttoxetter. It is also the first time Stafford will have an under 21 team with lots of fresh talent being developed by Matt Beedell and Harry Farmer, the new additions to the first team coaching set up. A number of new additions to the first team squad will also be on display in the preseason games as well. With only a month until the new campaign gets under way the squad have been tested and put through their paces with the fitness plans drawn up by Matt Quinby and Ross Panton to maximise players potential by getting them into their peak condition to hit the ground running when the season starts. Enjoy the games! It’s great to be back! Regards, Steve and Dom
NORTH WEST COUNTIES LEAGUE Ahead of our first ever season in the North West Counties League (NWCL), Ryan Pratt takes a look at the make up and history of the league. The league covers teams from a range of different areas, such as the Isle of Man, Cumbria, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, North Staffordshire, North Shropshire and the High Peak of Derbyshire. With 59 member teams for the upcoming campaign, the league has three divisions; the Premier Division at Step 5 and a Division One North and South at Step 6 of the National System. There are also two cups to play for; the Macron Challenge Cup, open for all NWCL teams, and the First Division Challenge Cup, open to NWCL clubs at Step 6.
