October 2021 Message from the Exalted Ruler, Mike Betenbaugh Hello to everyone at Houston Elks Lodge 151. As we move into October hopefully cool- er weather is on its way to Southeast Texas. On September 11th members of your Lodge placed our American flags along West Airport Boulevard, and put up new American, POW / MIA, and Texas flags then moved them to half-staff. This was all finished at 7:46 am local time, which is the exact time that the first plane hit the World Trade Center on that day 20 years ago in a terrorist attack against the United States of America. We must never forget those events that occurred on September 11th, 2001. On the 15th of September a Prisoner of War/ Missing in Action Remembrance ceremony was conducted by Officers of the Lodge. This is a new ceremony that Elks Lodges across the United States perform, and it was the first time that it had been performed at our Lodge to show honor and respect to all who have been a POW or are still in captivity, and to all who have been declared MIA. “Until the day they return home, or are returned to find eternal peace, We Must, and We Will Always Remember”. Next year September 11th is on a Sunday, and it would be very respectful to combine both ceremonies together on that day. Homecoming took place the 17th and 18th of September at Ottine. This year is the 75th year of Ottine. Your Sweetheart Linda Sheffield did very well at Homecoming. A very big Thank You to all who helped Linda get ready for and or helped Linda at her Sweetheart table. Also, a very big Thank You to everyone who made all the other events of Homecoming occur. Even though it was very hot that weekend it was a very good Home- coming. Again, thank you all. Members of your Lodge contributed Hurricane Ida relief supplies that were transported to Homecoming, and those supplies were picked up by Members of the Liberty, Texas Lodge to be delivered to folks in need of those items. This is what we as Elks do. Elks care, Elks share. The annual Grand Lodge District Deputy visit to your Lodge took place on September 21st. Thank you to Sally DiPalma, Renay Bennet, and Joy Olmos for being at the Lodge that night representing the Gulf Coast District. Your efforts are truly appreciated. I especially want to say thnk you to all of our Officers who were at the Lodge that night. FROM THE ESTEEMED LEADINGKNIGHT Time seems to have flown by this year and it is already October. Can you believe summer is over and the fall sessions of school are already in full swing? Quoting from Robert Frost; “In three words, I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: It goes on.” Indeed, life does goes on and this brings me to our virtual challenge in Brotherly Love for October. Brotherly Love teaches us that we have opportunity to do good unto others. So we are pre- sented with a crossroad as time continues to march forward, consciously choose to do good unto others or continue without being aware of doing good and just hope for the best. We hear the phrase, live in the present but here’s a new twist, trying to be present in the present as we choose to do good. It all goes right back to the foundation of being an Elk, do unto others as you would have them do unto you, the Golden Rule. Brotherly Love teaches us that the behaviors that demonstrate doing good unto others include; reaching our hand in friendship to others, lightening one an- other’s burdens, helping those that are exhausted, and supporting those that mourn. You may have noticed that the October challenge sounds very similar to the August challenge. The August virtual challenge related to how Brotherly Love manifests itself in kindness of deeds and the challenge was to conduct one random act of kindness during the month in expression of Brotherly love to lighten someone’s burden. The virtual challenge for October is related to consciously choosing to do good unto others. You choose what opportunity to be present in the present with; reaching out in friendship to a stranger, helping someone that is exhausted, or supporting someone that is mourning a lose. And remem- ber, lose comes in many fashions, lose of a person, a job, a friendship, a pet, a treasured heirloom, many things. The most wonderful part of practicing the virtual challenge of Brotherly Love for October, choosing to do good unto others, by practicing it becomes a habit and soon it is just a part of the virtuous person that you are! Aristotle said the purpose of life is “happiness”. Welcome to HAPPINESS. Fraternally yours; Cindie Pridy Esteemed Lecturing Knight FROM THE BOARDS OF DIRECTORS The Board of Directors are diligently working together to address remaining improvements to our social quarters and other areas around the Lodge. From my last report, we have repaired the kitchen drain, upgraded the air conditioning, repaired the pool and replaced the kitchen exhaust fan. Members, the Board acts at the direction of the Lodge and is not independent of it. Your input is valuable to us and so plan on attending one of our board meetings. If there is something you would like for us to address on our monthly agenda, please contact one of the officers. FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY Hooray, Fall has arrived, and I for one have had enough of our Houston heat for the year and am ready for some cool fall days. We have had a lot of really good events recently at the Lodge, if you didn’t attend you missed out on a lot of fun. I would like to commend two of our members who have really stepped up lately. Our Loyal Knight Cynthia Rowland has really done a great job with Elks National Foundation, despite being injured in a car wreck that did not slow her down at all. PER/Trustee Joy Olmos has helped raise hundreds of dollars for the Lodge with gift basket and 50/50 raffles that did not cost the Lodge anything, her donations and efforts are appreci- ated. As of this writing we still have 52 members on the delinquent list, if you have not paid your dues, we need you. We have a lot of fun activities and fellowship planned for this year, so come out and be a part of it. We are still very in- volved in charitable and community activities and as always we continue to support our Veterans. Our By-Laws Amendments have been approved and as of October 1st we have gone back to meeting every week on Tuesdays except in the months of June, August and December when we will meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays. We have an enthusiastic group of officers and committee chairs this year and we have already had some great ac- tivities and have many more planned, come out and be a part of it. As always, thank you all for what you do for our Lodge. Sincerely and Fraternally, Jim Grissom Secretary Gulf Coast District Leader Remember Members….
