 Issue #1

Each year, the United States celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to
October 15 by coming together and honoring the cultures and contributions of Hispanic-American
citizens. This year’s theme is: “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.”

Why September 15 to October 15?

September 15 is the anniversary of independence for several Latin
American countries. On this day, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala,
Honduras, and Nicaragua celebrate their Independence. These states
composed the Central American Federation, also known as the
Federation of the Centre of America. These regions declared
independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. In 1824, the United
States recognized the independence of the Federation of Central
                                                                                Central American Federation
American States from Spain.

Mexico celebrates its Independence on September 16 and as part of this
year’s theme, Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope,”
we would like to highlight the contributions of Don Miguel Hidalgo to
Mexico’s Independence. A Spanish priest and professor, Don Miguel
Hidalgo gave New Spain natives (modern day Mexico) hope of a better
future. On September 16, 1810, at the center of factional struggles within
the colonial government, Don Miguel Hidalgo called for a revolution and
Mexican independence during his famous speech Cry of Dolores. The
Don Miguel Hidalgo speech ignited a series of revolutionary actions by thousands of natives. The
natives managed to capture the city of Guanajuato and other major cities
west of Mexico City. His actions led to the Mexican War of Independence in 1821. Today, Don
Hidalgo is known as Mexico’s “Father of the Nation,” and he is one of the primary reasons why
Mexico celebrates its independence on September 16.

Chile celebrates its independence on September 18. In
1808, Napoleonic forces captured the King of Spain,
Ferdinand VII and on September 18, 1810, the first
Government of Junta Chile emerges. Eventually, the
newly formed government encountered challenges as
some members sought to separate from Spain and others
wanted to remain loyal to the Spanish Crown. Chile
officially issued a declaration of independence on
February 12, 1818. However, the country celebrates its
independence on September 18 as it marks the Government of Junta Chile, 1810
beginning of the independence process by the
establishment of the first governing body, the Government of Junta Chile.
