The dates in this document are illustrative and dependent upon the continued success of the vaccination programme and attendant fall in new cases of COVID-19 within the community and UK at large. Our road out of lockdown will be dependent upon data rather than bound by specific dates. Nevertheless, we believe that all within our community will welcome the publication of a roadmap that resonates with developments on the national stage whilst being reflective of and sensitive to the unique nature of our School community. We have established an outstanding reputation in terms of our response to this global pandemic. Over a year into this crisis, we have no evidence that transmission of the virus has occurred in school. Effective identification and isolation protocols, testing, contact tracing and quarantine measures have enabled us to minimise the risk of such an eventuality. We founded the Safe Schools movement and introduced measures such as the wearing of face masks in classrooms months ahead of such moves becoming government policy. These measures have helped keep us safe but, inevitably, they have served to separate our boarders and day pupils. The insistence on year group or boarding house bubbles has similarly served to fragment our community. Consequently, we are keen to loosen these restrictions as and when it becomes safe to do so. We have to recognise that there exists a broad spectrum of attitudes towards this crisis. Consensus is hard to achieve as people are justifiably anxious; especially given the direct and indirect impact of this virus. Our perspectives are, inevitably, partly dependent upon context and cultural attitudes. The government has published its roadmap, a summary of which can be found in this document. It is a progressive plan which, incrementally, provides for the almost full reopening of society by 21st June. Some have criticised it for its caution whilst others have suggested that it moves too quickly. Our plan is designed to closely mirror the steps taken with regard to social contact, travel and events. At no point will we move at a quicker pace than that recommended by the UK government but nor do we intend to prevaricate and keep measures in place when the scientific evidence suggests that to do so would be unnecessary. We recognise that there is a social, psychological and emotional cost to measures that serve to limit or divide a community and this has to be weighed against the health cost of proceeding without due caution. This roadmap is illustrative rather than exhaustive. It is an organically evolving document rather than a rigid statement of intent. However, it does provide all with a clear understanding of what it is that we have to do in order to ensure that school life is able to resume in all of its technicoloured glory.
