Following the skill growing and continuing to host fun, enjoyable challenges, every kid’s favourite part of the session, the community programmes that promote the game of match! Everyone played a friendly game attempting to cricket. This reaches out to any past, present, future dribble, pass or score. relationships with Local Schools, Outside Bodies and We are delighted to witness a promising response by Sports Associations. our Members who come and get involved, notably the Hockey section in supporting the PLK group over the years. This is a fundamental and sincere commitment of our Club. We welcome and encourage any of our members who are keen on being active in the local community to join us and volunteer a couple of hours per month. Special mention to our coaches for the constant support in volunteering their time and knowledge when their names are called. Without the hard work from Samson, KK and the rest of the Sports & Recreation staff, this would not be as successful as it is today. Looking to the future, HKCC will prepare to run PLK regular bi-monthly Cricket and Hockey initiatives. In addition, offer more opportunities to showcase new and fun sports. On Saturday 2nd June, The Club once again welcomed 20 children from Po Leung Kuk community centre. The children came in with huge enthusiasm and a smile to match, as we would host a 2 hour multi- sport session. Two groups of 10 children aged 6-16 alternated after 50 minutes between a cricket session and next door to the Sports Hall for the hockey programme. Cri-Zelda and Nizakat led the cricket session having the children split into groups focusing on ball handling, followed by a variety of games. All the kids were excited to take part and were engaged in any way possible for their team to win. As cricket may seem like a weird sport for them, the children sought interest in team work and camaraderie to help each other. This was fantastic to see as everyone was able to complete tasks given to them. THE PINKUN | July / August | 2018 6

CRICKET HKCC Taverners v Victoria Club Veterans (Over 60s) 11th May 2018 to the crease at 4. Brij and Martin set about restoring the innings with Martin soon retiring on a hard fought 31 not out. This brought Eddie Middleton to the crease who wasted no time getting off the mark with a first ball 4. Little did Eddie know this would be his only ball faced as he was run out next ball at change of over. A recap of basic calls “yes”, “no”, “wait” was heard repeated several times whilst Eddie trudged back to the pavilion. Our next youngster Isamu (13yrs) came in at number 6. Brij and Isamu demonstrated W why the future of HKG ith their first tour match of the cricket is bright - other than their calling between the previous day v. KCC cancelled due wicket Eddie reminds us. Isamu was next to go clean- to rain, the Veterans were fully bowled for 5 failing to get a big stride to the pitch of the assembled, adorned in their rather ball. Nigel Sun limped in at 7 nursing a swollen ankle flamboyant strip and raring to go by and not physically able to exploit poor throwing arms noon! Boasting an average age of 69 years and a few of the Veterans and take quick singles, but showed great months, the tourists embarked on a vigorous promise with a couple of beautiful straight drives. 30 minute warm-up and stretching session, a sight rarely With the score 70 odd for 4 at drinks, Taverners were seen on a Friday afternoon at the Gap. The Taverners relatively well placed knowing their lower order was arrived in dribs and drabs with perhaps a certain level of stacked with big hitters. Brij retired for a superb 30 runs complacency whilst the Tourists limbered up. Taverners’ pulling and cutting beautifully. This brought Bob Ward skipper, Junior Wallace, convened in the middle with to the crease only to witness from the non-striker end the opposition skipper Greg Johnson and promptly lost the demise of Nigel, falling to an absolute screamer of a catch toss. Plan B - Taverners bat. - caught & bowled. The big man, Brett Wilkinson, came With pencils sharpened, spare balls in place, and in at number 9 causing the opposition captain to quickly defibrillator at the ready (no jokes) the scorers signalled spread the fielders to the deep. Bob and Brett set about ready and the umpire called “play”. Stalwart Martin teaching the younger generation how to run between Sabine and Duncan McKay opened the batting against an unknown opposition who certainly talked a good game. Whilst there was no express pace from their most youthful member - the 64 yr old opener - there was certainly consistent line and length. Duncan patiently built his innings whilst Martin despatched the rare wide ball for 4. Duncan was first to go for a duck off a watchful 14 balls. 9/1 off 5 overs was not quite the flying start the skipper wanted, so in he came to assume the responsibility of number 3. Junior dug in while Martin steadily accumulated. After a lofted slog-sweep for 4, Junior was next to go spooning a simple catch to cover. 23/2 off 9. CRICKET the match. Brij replaced Bob’s tidy three overs and sent down some handy off-spin. Just before drinks, Junior made an inspired decision bringing 10 yr old Andy Ward into the attack. Andy was super-subbing for Eddie who’d had to leave the field early (… still replaying the run out in his head as he left the field). Second ball, Andy got the second break through with Don, the swashbuckling left handed veteran of 59 years club cricket, falling victim to the 10 year old on debut (ably caught by dad Bob Ward at mid wicket who skilfully made the catch look far more difficult than it was. A very proud father/son moment). Drinks were taken at the fall of wicket with Veterans on 70/2 off 16 overs. While Junior rotated the wickets taking quick singles, turning ones to twos and bowlers after drinks to get through the overs, the Veterans twos to threes - exploiting the fact that the shoulder is guilefully accumulated runs with several batsmen retiring one of the first joints to weaken at old age. A 4 and a in succession … proving the middle of the bat is an massive 6 by Bob looked like the start of the big push the effective weapon no matter the age. A quick switch of Taverners badly needed to post a competitive total. Not keeper to allow Brett a few overs failed to garner a wicket to be! Bob poked at a straight one and feathered it to the as boundaries flowed all too easily. With Nigel unable keeper for 13 runs off 7 balls. Not to worry, the next big to run, Phil refusing to run, Martin weary from carrying hitter Steve “Bottomless” Pitt strode to the crease. Brett his bat and Duncan, now hamstrung, camping firmly in was next out adjudicated LBW ... rather harshly in his his spot at deep backward square leg, we were fortunate opinion! Phil Daniels had the honour of number 11 with to have the youth of Brij, Isamu and Andy who covered the Taverners now in danger of not batting through the some serious mileage in the field and acquitted themselves overs. Phil did an excellent job of anchoring one end superbly. The youngsters also bowled 13 overs between and refusing to do anything more strenuous than amble them without a single wide. A caught & bowled by Bob through for one. Steve counter-attacked scoring a quick- and a run out by Phil/Brett offered the only glimmer of fire 19 before holing out in the deep to another very hope in the fading light. By the 31st over, the Veterans good catch. Fortunately, Martin & Brij were ready and cantered past 167 for the loss of only a handful of wickets. waiting to return to the crease. Phil’s quick demise meant 167 had indeed been 40 short. Martin & Brij needed to bat through the final 5 overs. And bat through they did with Martin playing not one The post match drinks and dinner were a wonderful but two lofted drives, a rare occurrence from the usually affair. The tourists and their accompanying posse enjoyed disciplined and technically correct batsman. Martin and were expressly appreciative of an excellent day at ended with 52 no and Brij 34 no. Taverners had amassed the Gap with typically great HKCC hospitality and a credible 167 off the allotted 35 overs. Runs were on fare. Many a cap, tie, shirt and even a work of art were the board, but would this be a fair total or 30 to 40 shy exchanged by both captains during the speeches. Young against these wily old dogs? Brij was awarded Man of the Match for the Taverners for his excellent effort with both bat and ball. Bottomless Pitt opened steadily from the their wonderful supporters promise to be back. A valuable other end but gradually started peppering the old timers life lesson was gifted to the younger generation by the with some shorter, faster deliveries (... after the skipper Veterans … decided George’s pre-match instructions would just have to be ignored!). This tidy bowling at both ends restricted the Veterans to 23 off the first 6 - maybe 168 was not You are too bad after all. Bob then came on from the creek end NEVER too old and soon got the first break through with Phil taking a or too young relatively straight forward catch despite his protests about to play cricket! how difficult it actually was. Duncan took over from Isamu, tactically taking pace off the ball. The Veterans Bob Ward showed their wisdom and kept the scoreboard ticking, mercilessly putting away the loose ball. Duncan, feeling a little aggrieved at the lack of protection at the deep square leg boundary, positioned himself there at the end of his 5 over spell and didn’t move from that spot for the rest of THE PINKUN | July / August | 2018 25

HOCKEY Junior News from Gen Rowe T erm 3 is always eagerly anticipated by our Junior Players as this is where they get to show us what they have learnt over the season’s course classes and have freedom and creativity across their sessions. This tournament teaches our players, amongst other things, commitment, teamwork, sportsmanship and accountability and we have been very proud as to how our players have approached this term. Excitement right from the start saw our teams being very competitive with end to end action and superb hockey being played across the board. With 271 goals scored across 57 players, it was a celebration fest every session! At the end though, there can only be one winner but praise is given to everyone who participated across the 4 weeks of action. You have truly shown what you are capable of and we look forward to seeing you back next season. For those who are departing Hong Kong, thank you for your support and commitment to our Junior programme and we wish you all the very best for your new ventures. Thank you to all those who assisted week in and week out with Term 3 coaches - Maddie Trussell, Heather Donovan and Lily Ng. Your help and commitment is greatly appreciated by myself and all our players! THE PINKUN | July / August | 2018 28

SQUASH Squash Tour to Kuala Lumpur - by Chris Evans A fter initially discussing the possibility of a Squash section tour to India, we eventually decided to let the new Tour organiser (me) walk before trying to run and settled on something a little more local to us in the form of Kuala Lumpur. A total of 18 people (kids included) signed up and we arranged to play two matches with reciprocal clubs, one versus Raintree and the other versus Royal Selangor. We set off on the early flight on Friday morning. After arriving at the airport several of the more important members of the tour went off to the business lounge while the rest of us were left to wander aimlessly round the airport or do some duty free shopping. Upon arrival in KL we were met by our bus driver and taken on the 45 minute journey to our not-your-usual-tour-hotel, the Ritz Carlton, where one of the members of the tour party met the new love of his life in the shape of the concierge. Lunch was duly arranged at a curry restaurant nearby and nicely filled the gap between our arrival and the time we had to set off for our first match. As it was the beginning of Ramadan and reasonably close to sunset we decided to set off in plenty of time….or so we thought. The 5km journey took close to 90 minutes, nearly half an hour longer than Google Map predicts someone would take to walk there. We arrived to find our semi KL resident, Phil, already halfway through his match and got ourselves changed and ready as fast as possible. A promising start of two wins and a lead in the other quickly turned and we eventually went down to a convincing defeat. That, however, was not the end of our squash for the night. Raintree has two jumbo doubles courts and see themselves as a jumbo doubles club. We were duly schooled in the game but thoroughly enjoyed, trying our best. After that it was on to the food and drinks put on by our very friendly hosts before seeing how many people we could fit into a taxi (answer: 9) for our significantly shorter cab ride back to the hotel where we extended the evening into the early hours at the hotel “bar” (described by Dog as a thoroughfare which served drinks). Saturday started with a city tour with our very knowledgeable tour guide when we visited Batu Caves (lots of thieving monkeys), the new palace (closed), Independence Square (right next to our next opponents) and finally a photo opportunity of the Petronas Towers. Fun fact: did you know one of the towers tilts at 7 degrees? A quick lunch followed near to the hotel before a bit of a chance for some rest before we headed back to Independence Square for our next match against Royal Selangor. On the walk to the courts we chanced upon a nice looking bar where we were stopping to take a team photo and a few members went in to have a look around. Something strange was said to Claire and it was shortly after that we noticed the sign: “Ladies and children below 18 are not allowed.” Not very #TimesUp that’s for sure! “cutting the piglet” >>>>> THE PINKUN | July / August | 2018 34
SQUASH As tour organizer, this match was my biggest worry and rightly so, it turned out. My counterpart was adamant he was going to provide us with the toughest opposition that he could as “my friend says you are the best squash team in Hong Kong” and none of my protestations about that were taken seriously. I can only assume his friend confused us with Kowloon Cricket Club (winners of HK Division 1) and not a social touring side from HKCC made up of mainly Division 6-8 and below. We proceeded to take an absolute hammering, only Chad and Ellie coming close, before Wilson saved us from the dreaded whitewash with an excellent victory. Off to the bar where our generous hosts provided a nice curry and even got the microphones out for a little presentation before we made our way back to the hotel and repeated the steps of the previous night in the thoroughfare/bar. The final part of the tour was Sunday lunch at, of all places, a pork restaurant where myself and Ellie were invited to cut the full piglet into pieces with, believe it or not, a plate. Our waiter explained to us the background of why they do this and, suffice to say, it culminates in the cutter dropping the plate into a bucket so it smashes. They then make a wish for health or wealth. For the record, we ate the 68,022nd piglet that they had sold since opening around a decade earlier. Thanks to all who made the effort to come along and I look forward to organising next year’s tour. Suggestions welcome!
